A World of Warcraft Roleplay Guide ThreadFollow

#1 May 30 2011 at 2:02 PM Rating: Sub-Default
Hello, this is not a thread where you can role play. I'm making this thread to teach people who are interesting in role playing with their characters (assuming anyone on this site does any of that, I dunno...) how to role play without twisting the lore.

Here is what you should and should not do with your character's story:

What you should not do:

Rule # 1. THE BIGGEST RULE OF ALL IS TO NOT TAKE CREDIT FOR ANY MAJOR OR EVEN MINOR LORE EVENTS AT ALL. In other words, do not say your character killed the lich king or any other raid boss or even any dungeon boss. Lorewise, there are many many many adventurers on both factions, any of them could've killed the lich king or hogger. Don't take credit for it, because somewhere else in the game, some other player is having their characters take credit for killing that same boss. So don't take credit for killing any boss, or any major lore event at all.

Rule #2. Don't be a God-Mode Mary Sue type character. This means that you should not make your character some super godly powered being that can do anything and destroy anyone. You will be /ignored by any sane role player instantly. God Mode Mary Sue characters are boring, just don't do it. Please.

Rule #3. Do not bend lore or add things that are not part of the lore to suit your roleplay characters. As in, don't make your character the offspring of a human and a dragon. It can't happen lore wise, so don't do it. You're not Richard Knaak, you can't just break lore as you please. Also, don't associate your character with any major lore characters. Like, don't say one of your characters is the secret child of Sylvanas. Seriously. Blizzard makes the lore, you role play accordingly to that lore.

Your character is also not from earth. As far as we know, earth doesn't even exist in warcraft. Don't make some silly flop story that your character is a human from earth who magically got teleported to Azeroth.

Rule #4. Your character is not a vampire. He/She will never be a vampire. So don't do it.

Rule #5. Your character is not a Jedi either.

Rule #6. No you can't be a Sith either.

What you CAN do:

#1. Your characters can be elite soldiers. Your character is an adventurer. Therefore, you are, rank wise, comparable to a storm trooper. Or any normal soldier. Yes like I said you can role play your characters as elite soldiers, just not GOD KING SUPER SAIYAN VAMPIRE SITH OVERLORD JEDI OF AZEROTH.

#2. Read the lore of your character's race. If, for example, you are a dwarf player, you are can only role play as an Ironforge dwarf. I'm not 100% on if you can roleplay as a wildhammer, since they all have tattoos. However, if your character was a wildhammer abandoned at birth and raised by bronzebeard dwarves....that would explain lack of tattoos . If you are a night elf, your character was born long before the night elves created teldrassil. This is because it was not very long ago that teldrassil was created. Your night elf character is not a teenager born in teldrassil. He/she was born long before it was created, since night elves age slowly, your character would be an adolescent while over 100 years old.

So yes, basically, that's all you need to know. I hope this helps people to better roleplay in the lore.

You can RP as any damn Dwarf you please. Nowhere in the opening credits does it specifically state you are an Ironforge Dwarf. The same goes for most races. Hell, you can rightly RP a Highbourne now, with Elf Magi. A Zandalari, a Defias, whatever you please.
Our characters HAVE killed all those big bad guys. Especially the ones in quests. Which leads me to the next point:
We are NOT just pawns in the war. Our characters are so highly ranked and coveted, we're sent in for political bartering, regicide, espionage, the works.
We are the David Petraeus(SP) of WoW. The Mike Mullen.
We're the guys they send in for high profile work.
When the Dragonmaw (Which you can RP as) were needed for the Horde War Machine, did they send Baine Bloodhoof to mediate with their leader? HELL no, they sent Cicorest, the Troll Mage.
Ever do the quests in Uldum? We're there, compliments of the Warchief himself, Gods take his soul, manipulating the PHARAOH HIMSELF to do our bidding.
Is this the work of a 'Stormtrooper?'

Yes but here's the issue. Who said your character did those things? Could've been someone else. Do you all the millions of alliance and horde adventurers did all those same things? Especially since in the quests, the quest givers usually imply that you, alone, did the tasks they gave you. So thats why I say don't take credit.

Maybe it was your character, maybe it was mine. Maybe it was Vin Diesel. He plays wow (or did). Maybe his character, one of them, did those things. We'll never know. Thats why I say don't take credit. Out of all the millions of adventurers, not all of them killed the Lich king or C'thun.

As for your comment on dwarves. I'd say you can't play a dark iron, well, I said above that maybe you could play a half dark iron, half bronzebeard dwarf due to the light grey skin options dwarf players have. But thinking about it, I'd say it's unlikely, some bronzebeard dwarves are just able to have light grey skin. I've seen some ironforge affiliated dwarves with light grey skin option. I seriously doubt they are half dark iron, now that I think about it. You could however be a wildhammer who was raised by bronzebeard dwarves and that's why you have no tattoos, but if you chose the light grey skin like my dwarf shaman has, I don't think its possible.

All wildhammer have peachy/tan/reddish skin.

I could get a tan to. Fortunatly my love for beer keeps me out of the sun.
#6REDACTED, Posted: May 30 2011 at 2:35 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) You can play a reddish or peachy skinned wildhammer, not a the cataclysm tan skin that some wildhammer dwarves have in twilight highlands tho, since Ironforge dwarf player characters can't get that skin.

I've RP'd in the past, so while I do agree with most of your rules I also take issue with telling people what they can and can't RP. Sure, there are things you can RP that most other RP'ers are going to frown at or make fun of you for doing. But they can still do it. Who are you to decide the rules of RPing and try to enforce them?

Derp, stop telling me how to play a game you didn't design and aren't paying for me to play.
#9REDACTED, Posted: May 30 2011 at 2:44 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Im not saying you can't role play as whatever. You can...but if you want to roleplay and have your character be plausible to exist in lore, as like a background character (because technically, that's all our characters are) you gotta play by the rules.

Roleplay is what you make of it, since it hinges on fantasy per definition and... well, 'fantasy' literally means 'what you make of it' (or 'to appear', if you want to be a purist). Anyone 'can' roleplay whatever they want, so a guide regarding what you should or shouldn't do probably won't really help anybody. If someone has the urge to roleplay as a half-dragon time-bender, they will. They'll end up on everybody's ignore list, whine, and quit the game or reroll. That's the way the World of Warcraft works, and also the way it should work, tbh.

You're better off handing out simple 'tips' to newcomers interested in roleplaying without a real clue what it's all about as to how they can avoid situations that might end up clashing with the official lore.

This thread is to help people who atleast WANT to learn how to properly roleplay accordingly to the warcraft lore.

You're right, that is silly... you can't be a sith and a jedi at the same time.

Yeah, I know you were trying to help but most of the posters here are pretty well versed in lore, and not many of us are active RP'ers. Smiley: tongue You need to know your audience before you write guides.
#22REDACTED, Posted: May 30 2011 at 4:07 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Ya you guys have never sounded like the role play type since I don't see any type of role play on this forum or even any interest in it. However, in case there IS, this thread is here. I've read a lot of role play character back stories recently for WoW and a lot of them have people taking credit for lore events and doing stuff that breaks lore. Some people role play high elf worgen for example and I don't even know if that's possible. Its probably possible, since night elves can become afflicted with the worgen blood curse, so it would not be a stretch that high elves can.

This isn't really the place for it, though. If we were going to roleplay in a game, we would roleplay in the game, wouldn't we?

Link.

I was actually going to comment on how you couldn't be bothered to read replies to your own posts, and then I realized that it was actually someone else.

They're multiplying.

Frankly, I'd be happy if people on RP servers at least made some effort to have RP names.

Pretty much what Isyris said. Some of us love to RP in the game. I dabbled in it a bit myself, never could really get into it though. Probably due to feeling slightly intimidated with jumping into a heavy RP guild and having to stay in character most of the time.

Oh and there will always be idiots DerpLord when it comes to RP. I remember reading a thread, I believe it was on this forum, about really horrible back stories some people came up with. One that sticks to my mind like the image of your mom inflating your dad* is the back story someone gave their warlock. This person was RPing as a pregnant warlock... that's right, a pregnant warlock. /boggle

*For our less astute audience, that was a sex joke.
