Interesting, never heard of that movie before. It looks very silly. Smiley: tongue

That movie did come out nearly 23 years ago, so some the youngsters here might not have had to live through those horrible few months of the Yahoo Serious craze. (Good heavens, he was on the cover of Time magazine!). Thank heavens he didn't become successful outside of Australia.

Hey, thanks for opening those emotional scars. What's next? A Gallagher reference? A crappy Yakov Smirnoff joke?

Yeah, I'm 27 so that's probably why I don't recognize the name. I was only 4 when the movie came out. =x

In Russia, Yakov Smirnoff tells crappy YOU jokes.

You need to understand, we see these all. the. time. Patience grows thin when people come here, squirt out their "study" (especially with no citations, first rule of reading a science paper is not to trust their conclusions without looking at the data), and disappear.
#33REDACTED, Posted: May 31 2011 at 11:50 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) It makes sense that anyone would get mad if their most triffic'd site is filled with a bunch of the ramblings of college students who dont know about half the stuff that comes out of their mouths, but flaming EVERY researcher is completely counter-productive.... and insulting ESL students is wrong on so many other levels.

No it isn't. With luck you will eventually tell the instructor that this is a hostile environment and he'll spam a different site. Failing that, perhaps your classmates will choose a different one. I'll go back to insulting you in your own post so that it feels more personal in hopes that you get the point. Feel free at any time to get your lazy instructor to post and defend the spam. I'd rather abuse him directly.

If you knew anything about the forum that you're posting in, you would realize just how many of the regulars here are not native speakers of English. Most of them get along just fine. At least one non-native speaker has already posted above; read back over and pick the EFL speaker. Take a moment and notice that people even go back and edit their posts, so "ESL" is hardly a great defense for sloppy work.

#35REDACTED, Posted: Jun 01 2011 at 12:18 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) haha if you can find the instructor you can have at him.

if your attacking the person through their lack of ability to communicate properly in your native language thats wrong, always, it doesnt matter who or what you think you are.

Interesting point. I'm rather sure of who I am (unless it turns out that I'm a butterfly having a dream). I'm director of a writing center at an international university. I teach EFL students from all over the world and have good reason to be impatient with the cluster **** that UD has afflicted me with.

Now, give your examples of someone here attacking OP for being an EFL/ESL student or admit that you're (not your) trying to spin things to put your readers on the defensive rather than addressing the point most of them made.

By the way, use Firefox. It will catch things like the contractions you typed wrong. There is nothing ESL/EFL about that, it is simply using your tools correctly.

#37REDACTED, Posted: Jun 01 2011 at 1:58 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Eh, all of these arguments got way too annoying for me because apparently people will literally find anything to argue about. Let me make my point clear again: there are MULTIPLE posts above where people are straying off the main issue of there being annoying DU crap all over everything; the only ones in particular that I take offense to are the ones mocking the way that the student published the post. While the grammar was technically correct, the word usage of the post was what not is considered normal english. I believe it is wrong to mock someone's way of speaking in any way, but especially if it is in the case of a person who is not communicating in their native tongue. I have nothing more to say.

Uh, yeah the posters on this forum often stray off-topic. It's how we keep traffic here and entertain ourselves. If we stuck to only talking about WoW and staying on topic for each thread, there'd be a lot less activity here.

And we're all about the +1's here. Smiley: grin If you can't stroke your e-peen via post count on a forum, what can you stroke it with?

You're making judgements about America based off of this internet forum? And we're the jerks?

1. I'm not American

2. I can't tell if someone has English as a second language or is just not very good at it. Most of the time I don't care or comment. However, if someone is a first time poster and writing in a post which has other problems (some of which I outlined in my original reply) I am less forgiving. I also think that the post title is very important for drawing people in to reading your post so extra care should be taken to make sure it gives off the right impression.

3. I know plenty of people (both in WoW and at work) who have English as a second language. When typing important things (which I'd say an introduction to a new community could be viewed as such) they make every effort to be as accurate as possible. I don't mind people making mistakes, but how I respond does depend a lot on context. My main problem with the OP is the lack of information in the post, how it was presented is just an added 'bonus'.

4. If you are trying to start a discussion relating to research it would be better to include a link to your research (or at least a more detailed explanation of the study if it is not published) and be a topic which would be novel to people who play WoW. From the lack of detail provided it is impossible to tell whether the findings are potentially interesting or if it is something which anyone who played WoW would already know via common sense.
