You replied before my second edit (it's how I roll), so I'll add it here as well.

I doubt William/Donna is a Freud reference. I was just trying to be funny.

I just LOVE the references from pop culture in WoW. One makes me laugh is Gregory Charles, a rogue trainer in Undercity, because in Quebec, Gregory Charles is a proeficient singer/music composer that's rumored to never sleep or almost. It might not be a direct reference, maybe it's even a coincidence, but it still makes me giggle.

Besides, other games such as FFXI had references too. There was some instance battle names "Charming Trio" where the 3 crawlers were named Prune, Pepper and Phoedme, a direct reference to TV hit show Charmed. Did it break my immersion? Hell no! It was hilarious fighting them.

Horatio Lane is a reference to Horatio Caruso, the main character of CSI Miami. He was added due to a meme featuring the CSI character making crappy but often funny puns as he put on his sunglasses at the start of every episode of CSI miami:

Horatio Caine, played by David Caruso. That site also has an odd decision of where to define the start of the meme. Youtube comments can't start something if it's featured in the video they're commenting on, and the CSI crew has been knowingly hamming up that intro since season one.

So? At least Blizzard found some way to incorporate him into the game (which I think is clever, by the way). Besides, unless I'm mistaken, he's only in about four or five quests and it's not like any of them revolve around him or his one-liners.

To be honest, I think your problem is simply that he is in the game in the first place. You don't have to like him, but just remember that there are plenty of other people who do. Smiley: tongue

By the way, if you can't stand Claine's puns, wait until you hear some of mine. Smiley: grin

Don't get why people seem to think WoW is a sitcom, warcraft has not, and should not ever be, a comedy. Light jokes on the side are fun, just the references need to be more subtle.

But Warcraft is pop culture.

Your definition of pop culture just doesn't match the general definition.

I seem to be getting the feeling the OP is more saying "it's ok for pop cutlure reference's in game as long as they are about people I like". Just because you like Harrison Jones and hate Harris Pilton doesn't mean everyone else does.

There have always been fun reference's in the Warcraft universe not just World of Warcraft. If you don't like the idea of them being there and immersion and RPing are so important to you then just right them off as different charcters in your head.
#38REDACTED, Posted: May 28 2011 at 7:06 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) hmm, I'll have to read that article later. Any who, it's not haris pilton specifically that I hate, its any character in game that's a celebrity reference. A Tronald Dump would equally annoy me :)

Warcraft, in short, has put a large enough mark on our culture that it would be considered pop culture. Just like people know and recognize Indiana Jones, Paris Hilton and Horatio Caine in the game, people outside of the game know and recognize it.

World of Warcraft has been featured in music videos, movies and television shows. If you tell someone that you're playing an online game, they'll likely think you're playing World of Warcraft.

Starcraft is pop culture in Korea. They're crazy about that game over there.

I agree that this game isn't a sitcom, but I disagree that it's a serious game. Yes, the story is somewhat serious, but Blizzard's games have always had an underlying layer of humor. Even Diablo, which was a more gritty and seriousâ„¢ game, has that humor in it. There is no cow level, for instance.

Here's a cutscene from the first Starcraft game. The story itself is serious, but the cutscenes range from the ridiculous to the funny. Sometimes a bit of both.

Here's the end credits for Warcraft 3, featuring a rock concert by Arthas himself.

You might not think Blizzard's games are sitcoms, but Blizzard doesn't care.

So you have tremendous respect for Varus? Alma? CrunkJuice? Pity would be a better word to describe what I feel about those three, let alone DerpLord.

#43REDACTED, Posted: May 29 2011 at 4:57 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) OK, I get that, but it still doesnt change the fact that warcraft is, at it's core, a serious story. Blizz likes to joke around sometimes tho, that concert at the end of warcraft 3 is as you must know not canon. But yes I get what you mean now by WOW being pop culture.

I cant believe you didn't go with the Terran patrol cut-scene from Star Craft. That one was hilarious. And as early as Warcraft II, units had additional semi-hidden voice-acting if you clicked on them several times.

A Dr Evil type villain was already added in a patch during vanilla as part of a large, epic quest chain.
#47REDACTED, Posted: May 29 2011 at 7:54 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) This reminds me of when I saw Thor. It had several hilarious bits, but overall was a serious film. Not a comedy film, a serious action film with several bits of humour, but not to the extent that it was a comedy. Maybe that's what warcraft is akin to?

Well the first two are fake for the sake of being extreme, and I've never read posts by the third so I can't really vouch. So I can't respect them for not really believing what they post.

I actually like most of the references. Not all of them. For example, the Paris Hilton thing with the Bag was annoying because I couldn't afford it.... (Then again, I can't afford most of the crap she buys in real life... So maybe that was the point - now that I think about it.)

Derp, you are a troll. You come on here and spout your opinion about some topic and try to start arguments or instigate trouble. None of your posts have been well received - why don't you just go away?

Honestly, I haven't been immersed in this game since 2005 or 2006. Maybe it's because I'm getting older and things don't excite me as much, but I don't think I could get into a game like that anymore. I wish I could. I've been chasing those memories of mmos for years now to no avail.
