Hey, I'm new here so I'm not sure...

Someone dropped the rating on this post but didn't comment or anything.. I couldn't find anything in the forum guidelines that prohibited me posting my website. Was I wrong? If so I'll delete my post immediately..

We don't like people coming to this forum just to advertise their random WoW related website. Consider the ratedowns as a gentle way of telling you to @#%^ off.

We are all happy that you have a passion to make art about World of Warcraft. The problem is, as Aethien put it, people will come to this site, advertise for their website, then bugger off without contributing. If you truly are the "WoW enthusiast" that you say you are respond to posts for a while. Get your post count up and aim for sage-ish level. At that point we would probably* welcome the opportunity to look at your art. If you choose to stay with your route though you can follow Aethien's advice and **** off.

*while I cannot speak for everyone here, most of us would at least give you the benefit of the doubt and give constructive criticism about your art.

Criminy--

Thank you for your reply. I do appreciate it, since I was confused and hadn't meant to be offensive.

I was hoping to connect with other gamers on this forum and get started with that with WoW art, since I myself love seeing WoW fanart and fanfiction.. I didn't realize that it was frowned upon to try and do that as a forum noob. I'm sorry for the rudeness.

I realize now I shouldn't have posted my site, but being told to **** off doesn't seem very welcoming for noobs. I've been posting at another forum with more fanart/fiction so I guess I'll take the time to build up my post count there for now.

I'm editing my original post so my link will be removed. I'm sorry for the trouble!

Thank you for taking the time to explain the situation to me. Cheers.

Don't take it to heart when people tell you to sod off. They're just being meanies Smiley: tongue

We consider this forum a database of information about the game. Advertisements are frowned upon, mostly because they don't give the forum anything in return.

Of course, if you weren't trying to sell anything, I don't see the harm in it.

Yeah, given that there were prices next to everything on the site I'm just a teensy little bit skeptical about the "hoping to connect with other gamers on this forum and get started with that with WoW art" thing.

It was a gallery of artwork.. I've been doing commissioned artwork for years and have done some art for people I met through WoW and other mmorpgs. A friend suggested I get to know more people in forums, plus I like to hear feedback on artwork regardless. I went about it the wrong way.

Sorry, again. I didn't realize it was such a faux pas.

As an aside, I did used to come to Allakhazam alot for some other games back in the day.. It hadn't occurred to me til now that as it's more geared towards being a wealth of information - which it has been very helpful to me for such - it might not be so much geared toward arty type stuff.

And hey, I was proactive about finding out if my post was okay or not because I care, right? And I killed it immediately when I got a reply. Some points for that, Aethien?

Anyway! Sorry.

I believe we had someone else "advertise" his or her own artwork (sculptures, was it?) site a while back, and as far as I can remember, we let the link stay because the art was good.

You could always send a private message to an admin and check with them. I really wouldn't mind you linking to your site, even if it was mainly to advertise, given that you've stayed around to apologize, defend your position and all in excellent English. It's a nice breath of fresh air from the 'hai gusy plz check my site kthx by' one-post wonders that drop by.

Besides, I'm getting curious now. Smiley: sly

Thanks for your suggestion. :) Honestly, it was a mistake. I'm not some spam bot or anything, I learned my lesson on forum etiquette. :\

Yeah, my art's pretty good (Not to be egotistical, but I guess when you've gone to school for it, published it and paid bills with it, it should be at least kinda decent), but I wouldn't really want to pursue trying to get it up here if it's not really the place for it. Truth to be told, I feel pretty awful about stepping on people's toes without realizing it. I'll stick to submitting it to places that specifically receive and post WoW fanart and all, and keep the commissions to people who approach me. Keep it all nice and separate. :D

But hey, if you're curious, I can pm you some links of some of my WoW art without commission details or the website attached or even accessible, just plain ol' artwork. :)

I'd like that.

And I'm pretty sure you could post that here as well, since without price tags, it would be more of an "open for reviews" kind of thing. People just get a little antsy when the posts come off as pure advertisement.

Also, if you want to stick around, tell us more about you. What server do you play on? What class do you play? Are you a girl? Do you have pictures? Which alcoholic beverage would I need to get you drunk on?

You know, the standard stuff.

PMed!

The wariness is understandable if there's a lot of advertising spammers.. I'm a little afraid of posting any art links at this point, commission pricing attached or no, though. Anyone else have some feedback on the idea of a post with art and no mention of commissions / $$? Aethien maybe?

I tried to add a sig as a half-joke reply to the latter stuff but don't think I can.. Wow this forum is pretty securely locked tight eh?

(Not even possible to get to a page that has dollar signs on it from that link, by the way.)

Curse my drunken eyes, I can't for the life of me see what I need to do to get pics! I'm mixing up a mean gin & tonic right now, though. Smiley: sly

Also, signature images aren't supported. We have some built-in signatures, if they still work, but you can't add images yourself in the signature.

Tbf, it's a stance I've never quite understood, and it seems to come more from a "we're too elite for this" point of view than anything else. Obviously I can understand that you don't want a forum full of advertisements with ********* but this is kind of the other extreme end. When all is said and done, in cases like these it's simply someone posting their Warcraft-related stuff in an attempt to find like-minded people and thus enlarge the WoW-community. How is that bad?

I can't help but note that it feels a bit like a case of paradoxal emotions here, where Allakhazam thinks it's more important than it actually is and as a result frowns on anybody claiming to be of any importance because it stirs up the lie regarding its own function.

I am sorry if my post came across as a bit harsh there. The fact remains that you are willing to stick it out and chat with us makes me realize you are not here for the usual "HAI EVRY1!! CLICK LINK AND BY STUFF KK?!!?!1?". Hope to hear from you more often, nice to see a new face that can spell and use proper sentence structure. Even if I fail at that sometimes. :P

@Maz:

Ah hah.. Couldn't post an img either, maybe I'm doing it wrong or it's restricted.. Or change/upload an avatar? Agh! XD

@Mozared:

I think the main issue was that my website with the artwork had pricing for commissions on it, since I make part of my living off of art in a myriad of ways (Storyboards, concept art, illustration, animation, etc). Do I want to get commissions? Sure. From here? Doesn't have to be, wasn't expecting anything. Do I want to share some WoW art with the community and get feedback and maybe have others share their's? Of course! That's the goal.. Was that goal communicated effectively? No.. I wasn't thinking at all.

The secondary issue being that since I was brand new to the forums, posting a link wasn't the smartest way to break the ice. If I'd gone about this in a different way I'm sure it would've turned out better.

Live and learn. I'll see about throwing the artwork on an alternate site with no mention of commissions, and then re-post in the future if people are interested..

@Criminy:

No worries, I understand. Thanks for the welcome. :D Now that I'm becoming a bit more acquainted with the forum, it is nice to see it's full of English the way it was meant to be. Somewhat rare on the high seas of the internet..

Images cannot be posted using basic img tags(I think admins can, but normal members cannot). Premium members can upload images to their accounts and post them from there.

Avatars are premium member only features as well.

Specifically that you did so in your first post.
Making your first post in a community with a post saying "hay guys I want to share art <link to website selling art>" is pretty much the best way to make yourself look like you're just here for free advertising.
