Life after Warcraft?Follow

Renew golf membership, expending garden, bake old recipe from my dad journal, buying and renovating old homes, touring on my motorcycle...

After 5 wonderful years of Warcraft, I think I'm ready to let it go. Down to 1 account and the boys quit playing, I will be using 20-40 hours on something else. No regrets, it was a fun ride!

I won't get in another online game, I shot 82 at golf today and the beer was good. What do you plan to do after Warcraft?

Get drunk and go to sleep.

It's a ritual by now.

Honestly, I don't know. I suppose whatever comes along that strikes my fancy.

This is something I've thought a lot about recently, what with the general consensus about Cata being "meh, been there, done that," and all.

I think most of us can agree that WoW has peaked, one only has to look at many of the remarks on this very board to see that. That said, I'm probably not quitting any time soon - I said "peaked," not "keeled over and died of a massive stroke." WoW isn't dead yet, and there's still a lot of fun to be had. But I think we are on the downward slope of things.

As for what comes next, I don't really know. I've always enjoyed online games, and Call of Duty-style online doesn't strike me as actual online. My next big game is going to be a PC game, I think, likely an MMO. But what that is remains to be seen. I can guarantee it won't be Rift (nothing against the game, but I know it's not for me), but I can't guarantee what it will be.

Diablo 3 will be out in a reasonable amount of time.

Honestly, I'm kinda hoping for something non-Blizzard. I mean, they make great products, but I at least want to see what the other side of the hill is like, you know?

On the golf course today

Player A: Well well! Look who's here! Where have you been?

Me: Don't ask...

I don't know why but this little phrase "where have you been" got me thinking today.

No one is saying you can't "have a life" AND do WoW at the same time.

WoW doesn't magically force you to sit at the computer every waking hour that you're not working, eating, or sleeping.

Lack of control over yourself does -that-.

But at any rate... Golf? meh. To each their own I suppose. Rather good game of baseball/softball or volleyball myself.

Years are catching up with me, golf is more forgiving.

I've played golf, if there is any sport more insanely frustrating, I have yet to encounter it.

I'll stick to what I know. Basketball. Been playing since I was 12, so I have some understanding of the game. Even coached some 7-8th graders, and taught them the value of being aggressive on defense, and how to screen out for a rebound. Sometimes wish I hadn't done that; one of the boys ( pretty good sized ) became a absolute monster on the boards and defense, he even pushed me around in practice. Damn ungrateful, if you ask me.

As far as my post-WoW life, someone mentioned Diablo 3. Or, in a pinch, if it ever happens, the new Star Wars MMO. Hell, by the time WoW dies, Blizzard will probably be releasing Titan, or whatever it's called. There is gaming hope for the future. Maybe. It could happen. Honest.

I volunteer a couple of times a month (nothing regular, I just check Hands On for stuff that involves physical work -- I can use the exercise and it shuts the brain up), spend time with my RL friends (limited by schedules, my best friend works the night shift, has a second job GMing a MUD, and a long-distance girlfriend so our hanging out is usually IM chatting when one of us is about to fall asleep), play with the cat and on sunny days take a book to one of the many parks around here. And I don't need to give up WoW to do it. Everything in moderation.

I mainly play WoW to hang out with long distance friends. My brother's on the other side of the country and I know a bunch of his friends in the area too, so it's a place I can go when I'm feeling social and leave when I'm not. This is awesome for an introvert, I always feel awkward when I try to do the same at parties; people always seem to think it's a judgement if I step away for an hour to find a quiet spot.

I've always found the whole idea of "people who play WoW don't have lives" rather... strange.

I have a career.
I have other hobbies.
I have a family.
I have pets.
I am a film fanatic.
I travel.

and... I play WoW.

How could I possibly reconcile the opinion that playing WoW means not having a life, with my rather full and active life, which happens to include WoW?

"Life after Warcraft"?

Same as during.
I just can't accept identifying my entire being with an online game.

I just haven't seen much else I'm interested in. Not until Nintendo announces a new F-Zero at least. (I so hope they're working on one. Oh please god let them be working on one!)

Civ5. Up to 1226 hours played now. Think of Maz every time Harald Bluetooth speaks.
Mechwarrior 4. Yeah, it's 10 years old. Still fun.
Magicka. Not my usual style of game. I.. kinda suck at it. Addicting.

I also spend some time away from the computer, which was rare before. I actually watch TV again.

Haven't played WoW since sometime around christmas/new year, and was barely logging on for a week or two before that.

"Life after Warcraft" implies that it's an either/or situation, which is not the case. I think sometimes there's a false assumption that time spent playing WoW is time that might otherwise be productive, and that if we all quit we'd all the sudden become a bunch of Ben Franklins running about to and fro inventing things and governing countries and fathering illegitimate children. But really there's generally a point of diminishing returns on anybody's ability to concentrate, which is why we invented downtime to give our brains the necessary time to recharge. Certainly some people let play time dictate their schedule instead of their schedule dictating play time, but I'd guess that's a much smaller minority than stereotypes suggest.

When I get some downtime, I read. If I don't have the mental energy for even that much, well, what's on TV is mainly crap, and golf doesn't interest me, so I play an MMO. Currently I'm playing Rift, which despite Fish's stubborn refusal to see its awesomeness, is awesome. :) RPG's brought me to video games rather than the other way around, so for as long as I enjoy gaming it will most likely be in a fantasy MMO type situation.

"Life after Warcraft" will be the same as it was before Warcraft. I have always been a gaming nerd and I will probably stick with it until my arthritis gets to the points where I can no slay imaginary pixel dragons. Hopefully by then they will have virtual reality software that I could plug myself into.

During the summer WoW takes a backseat out door activities. It's still nice to log in for a bit and mess around after a long day out, or a rainy day.

I personally get this one a lot. I used to spend 4-6 nights a week out seeing bands (much of my work is in the music business), But a couple of years ago I pared it down to 1-2 and even just this past week someone whom I haven't seen in a while asked me "where the hell have you BEEN??". Just so happens she and I haven't seen any of the same shows in a while. Same kind of thing happened when I had to quit baseball (motorcycle accident). Didn't see any of those friends in over a year and when I did, well, you know what they asked me.

I think it's true of any social circle. Once you spend time doing something else it's as if you disappeared when really, you've just started doing something else and there are only so many hours in a day. Humans are creatures of immediacy.

And it's not that I traded live music for WoW. More along the lines of "I have a lot more free time not working every night! yay!", and not owning a TV.

Quit WoW and Rift about 2 months ago so I been playing some League of Legends, pretty fun and I get my daily dose of pvp and getting called a newb. So I kinda feel right at home with out paying for a sub. Also read the first 3 books in the Song of Ice and Fire series. But usually just waiting till my old lady pops the baby out in 2 more months.

LoL seems to either be awesome or infuriating, no middle ground. It's not win/loss either, I've lost good matches, and even the times you're blown out of the water can leave you in awe, but if things are toxic with even one guy going off in chat they're REALLY toxic. I always enjoy when I take Trist over a wall and the other team loses their **** and reports me for "cheating". Haven't played in ages though, probably 6-12 months or so. Last hero I recall was Sona, who's rather fun.

I need a job that I can drink at, those pesky day time hours when I can't drink are very annoying.

That was directed at the "other side of the hill" thing. I'm actually going to buy and play D3 as well. D2 was a lot of fun when I was a kid. I don't know why they called the sidekick people "followers" this time around though, seems a bit carebearFFXIish for Diablo. What was wrong with Mercenary?

Followers can be used to entertain the idea of religious war more thoroughly.
That is still the theme of D3, right? The dark gods and light gods are clashing and using the mortals as pawns? I haven't kept up on it so I can be more pleasantly surprised when it comes out.
