That looks cool in a sense but...nu uh. He was only casting like 2-3 spells, didn't even look like he was able to loot stuff. Wow just takes so much more than flailing your arms around.

Well, he was a frost Mage.

Imagine if you got ganked during that time, eh?

Also, excercise that light would scarcely make a difference.

Would love to see him try playing one of the "JOHN ******* MADDEN" classes.

I'd like to see him play a Boomkin. First single target with the five spell priority rotation, and then multi target with the two DoTs and then Starfall, Wild Mushroom, and Hurricane. That would be entertaining. :-)

Your missing the whole point. the video was very simplistic. With a bit of work you could build in a complete set of commands allowing you to do anything your keyboard could do.. Still when all is said and done if I wanted to work that hard at it I would just go outdoors and assault random people on the street.

That would be fun... for about 5 minutes

Really, anything that can be done with a keyboard could be done with this. A single-target rotation would be fairly easy, you'd just look like you were having an epileptic attack while you were playing a Feral Druid (the original JOHN &*%$ING MADDEN class with a 1-sec base GCD). The main limitation would be on just how many movements you can map to the keyboard, and if there's an easy way to add in modifiers Ctrl/Alt/Shift to multiply the number of macros you can set up.

The main problem, though, is in trying to play WoW without a mouse. Sans Loot-A-Rang, you won't be able to loot enemies when you're solo. More importantly, you're stuck keyboard-turning and use tab or a /assist macro for targeting. Party healing could be done by mapping the F1-F5 keys, but that's clunky and cuts into the available movements for other keyboard commands.

All in all, this does have some obvious potential.

Seems like it is very little of a workout considering the guy was barely moving his arms.

The guy was talking about using the technology for stroke victims and others that need to relearn how to do basic movements. I don't think any of us will ever have the chance to use this to play WoW.

The software is free open-source and available for download from the university site. And the Kinect controls you can get at Wal Mart or the nearest electronics store for $149.99. Not cheap, but certainly not unattainably expensive.

Sure, in the same way a toothbrush can do the work of a mop.

For people who find it a fun system of control and don't mind worsening their performance to do so, sure. For stroke victims, maybe. For people interested in controlling their character optimally, or those wishing to lose weight, not really.

Tech like the kineckt is interesting to me for the 1:1 movement and precise control is offers (in theory); in this case, we get the opposite. I have a hard time seeing this particular development as significant.

If only someone would have pointed out that substituting body movements for keystrokes could limit your input options, and that playing WoW entirely without a mouse would render some tasks clunky, inefficient, or even impossible.

Oh wait, I think someone did.

What's that? It's in the same post you took snippets from? Oh...

By 'obvious potential', I was alluding to uses for people that are otherwise unable to use a keyboard. I was an Army medic, the first thing that came to my mind was people that have severe injuries to their hands or partial amputees. As the tech advances, I can see the user being able to manipulate a cursor on the screen with body movements, similar to how Wii works with the Wii-mote.

Firstly, I think you were phrasing things in such a way as to understate problems with this generally. Secondly, I was arguing that the loss of the keyboard was just as relevant as the loss of the mouse (that's why I homed in on that section, not to divorce it from its context) as it's significantly faster to press 1 than do a merry little jig. You never mentioned that. Maybe you didn't understand my analogy, I don't know. It wasn't difficult.

No one's arguing that this even approaches being an efficient way to play WoW, or any other game. It's an alternate input method that might be fun, or possibly someone's only option. Someone mentioned JOHN %$&*ING MADDEN DPS priorities, but the complex part of the DPS isn't knowing and using your keybinds, it's using the right ability at the right time. Cats have Mangle(1), Rake(2), and Shred(3) for CP; FFF(4), Skull Bash(5), and Feral Charge(6) for non-damaging abilities; Rip(7), FB(8), and Savage Roar(9) for finishers; Ravage(10) if you spec'd Stampede; and Tiger's Fury(11), Berserk(12), Dash(13), Barkskin(14), and Survival Instincts(15) for CDs. Assuming the software will support at least 15 distinct movements (and preferably many, many more), basic Patchwerk DPS is possible. Understand the priorities, bind the most-used abilities to the easist/fastest motions, and go to town. Movement will be the clunkiest part of single-target DPSing, as I pointed out, because you'll be limited to keyboard movement.

I wouldn't go into a progression fight, or even a PuG heroic using something like this. I don't think it's even something I would enjoy. I'm not going to bash it just because the demo video doesn't (hopefully) show what the software and the Kinect are actually capable of doing.
