Easiest HeroicsFollow

#1 Dec 15 2010 at 2:39 PM Rating: Excellent
So I am just starting to do heroics, so far I have attempted BRC and Throne of Tides. BRC we got down the first boss and the tank quit on the second boss. (PuG) But I heard that one is one of the hard ones. In Throne we were doing fine but the tank's (Guild) internet connection blew up.

Anyway back in WoTLK and even in BC to an extent not all Heroics seem to scale the same from normal to heroic. I have heard that Vortex pinnacle is not that bad on heroic for example.

I'm looking for the UK, VH, and Nexxus of Cata. A place to jump into heroics and get the best upgrades from there before trying some of the less forgiving ones.

Any tips from some of the hardcores who are hitting them hard?

Umm, Vortex Pinnacle wasn't too bad and neither was Lost City as long as you have some CC there it makes it a lot easier (for both). Stonecore can be challenging the first time through if you don't know all of the changes to the bosses and if you have bads that can't avoid avoidable damage/deaths.

Yeah, VP isn't too bad. Neither is BRC honestly. Not sure how far you got into ToT, but that last boss is a serious *****. Stonecore is pretty tricky too. It's easy to say, don't stand in the fire, but the Stonecore bosses have some interesting mechanics for the "fire" which you're going to have issues with the first time or two. So far it's the only heroic I haven't cleared, but I was doing that earlier today when I was really tired and that probably contributed a bit. Those are the only four I've been in thus far, so I'd be interested to know which heroics are "easier" as well. I've still got three greens and no helm with a meta gem, so my dps is less than stellar.

Did Vortex, Lost City, and Halls of Oats tonight and picked up 4 new shiny heroic Ret pieces plus some offset stuff! Non of those seem to bad. BRC felt worse but that was a pug with a fairly stupid tank.... Tonights runs were with good guildies and seemed pretty smooth with everyone CCing, interupting, moving out of bad stuff and what not.

I should run the rest of them this weekend and then I'll try and post up a difficulty list.

Three pieces of gear on my "best stuff before raiding" list come from Stonecore heroic. FML.

speaking of gear: is there a good and complete list with gear that drops in the dingeons on normal and heroic mode? Right now I dunno where to go to get my gear, other than grinding (and with heroics: wiping) my way to exalted with tanking gear factions.

Add filters as desired.

Smiley: dubious That's why you can add filters.. You can filter by slot, by type, by main stat, whatever.

for instance this is a list of all leather gear, with spirit, but without resilience.

One of the filter options is drops in... pick your dungeon(s) that you want loot tables from and go to town. You can look at one dungeon at a time if you want, or pick all the Cataclysm dungeons and see what they offer. Just add a filter to pick a second dungeon for the item source.

I've already spotted some upgrades for whenever I get back to real internet and actually get my copy of Cataclysm, at this point I'm holding out til Christmas before I buy it myself since I'm still without decent internet and adding a time-card / subscription right now would be silly waste of said card, but certainly gives me a chance to decide where I want to run trying for the gear I need right off.

(Dungeon drops)
Drops in normal mode (dungeon) -> Any [heroic mode for pre-raid]

(Crafted gear)
Crafted by a profession -> Yes [or restrict it to a single one, like BS]
[Binds when equipped] [if you're not a crafter yourself]
Item level 325+ [346 for pre-raid]

(BoE world drops)
Crafted by a profession -> No
Binds when equipped
Item level 325+ [346 for pre-raid]

To avoid confusion, you can filter further with
Usable by (race) (class)

You can also easily set it to have stat weights to help figure out what pieces are better.

True. Important safety tip, though - the default stat weights are apparently from a different, entirely unrelated game that by a weird coincidence uses the same classes, specs, and stats as WoW does. Except for the holy paladin profile, which does include mastery (so it's not just from pre-4.0) but doesn't include spirit.

The thing about stat weights in general - not just fixed comparisons like wowhead filters, or pawn, but also more nuanced simulation tools like rawr, mew, and femaledwarf - is that reforging changes item comparison in a fundamental way.
- For capped stats like hit and expertise, you have a lot more flexibility in working around the cap, so "hit past cap" is of nonzero value, but the real effective value is going to be hard to pin down.
- Large amounts of a mediocre stat are not just equal to medium amounts of a good stat, they're better, possibly considerably so. And large amounts of a useless stat aren't useless.

Wowhead's stat weighter doesn't play well with reforging. Forgot to mention that so make sure it is turned off. It does somewhat limit the effectiveness of the tool but it is still pretty good.

Did Tol'Avir and Throne of the Tides earlier today. Granted, we only joined Tol'Avir for the last two bosses, but it seemed like an easy instance. Throne of the Tides was funky. The trash was arguably more difficult than the bosses themselves. Vortex Pinnacle was also pretty easy, unless people get kicked off the platforms and such.

I've found that it boils down to the type of tanks you get. Paladins and Warriors seem to take less damage, or at least less spiky damage, than Druids and Death Knights. Which brings back memories.

Throne of the Tides trash to the optional boss is pure ********* I was there once as a tank with guildgroup, I had 333-346 gear. I pop all my CDs and run to the big Gilgoblin group, and proceed to die in 3 seconds. It's just retarded. Otherwise though, it's fun instance.

I went into my first Heroic today, Grim Batol. It went fairly smoothly, no trash deaths and only 2 or 3 wipes. Until the last boss. I dont see how that is meant to be done, if the dps dont burn the adds down you end up with so many whelps up that the damage is unhealable, but the adds get that shield that reflects 20k damage to attacks and that is unhealable too.
We gave in eventually.

I've only done GB two times on heroic, but I haven't had any issues with the adds during the last boss getting a shield. If you have a class that can slow or root you want to do that on the adds and then burn them down as fast as you can before they reach the eggs.

I think it's pretty much mandatory to have some kind of snare that you can put on the adds on the last boss in GB. Last time I was there, we had me as a kitty druid and a frost DK, and we were able to slow the two long enough to kill them before they got to the eggs. One other thing that helps is if the tank keeps the boss close enough to where the eye of the storm spawns that melee can DPS during that part of the fight.

Okay, scratch what I said previously. I checked tonight and I haven't been to GB on heroic yet. >.>
