I pre ordered cataclysm. When I log in it still says burning crusades. Is the upgrade automatic or is there something I still need to download? If it is automatic, what r the differences betwen burning crusades and cataclysm?
You have to upgrade linearly.
Vanilla -> BC -> Wrath of the Lich King -> Cataclysm.
If you don't have Lich King, you won't have Cata.
Also, you have to apply the code you got when you payed for the game.

When you say that you pre-ordered, do you mean:
1) I pre-ordered the digital upgrade on the main World of Warcraft site.
or
2) I went to my local game store and reserved a copy there.
If 1, you should go to the official support forums located here for assistance.
If 2, did you actually go to the store and pick up your copy?
