I haven't seen anything posted on this yet, but I'm going to have to say that Archaeology is a pretty decent way to get yourself some decent XP if you have plans on leveling it.

I haven't really had the notion to level my "main" character... not sure why, just.. haven't.

Either way, I planned on getting archaeology on her, and after going at it for about 2 hours, she has about 55% of a level... on just archaeology alone.

At Level 80, I was getting 11550 XP per dig (there are 3 of those per digsite!) and my mom's Lv81 character was getting ~13800 or some such, with rested.

The XP piles up pretty quickly doing that.

Edit: The only bad thing, is that for some odd reason, it does not give you guild reputation, nor exp towards your guild level. I'm wondering if this is a bug, as all other sources of XP seem to work in that fashion, except Archaeology.

I already posted multiple times about it in other threads. Smiley: tongue

Edit: but yes, it's very nice experience, the only downside is that you won't discover any dungeons, and you won't be getting greens, and your epics from 80 will be completely outclassed by level 83.

If you want to level via Archaeology, I'd suggest at least doing Uldum to get gear, then continue to 85.

That might be why I didn't see it; I looked through the first 2 pages of Alla looking for anything with "Archaeology" in the title, and saw nothing, and I was thinking "WTF, nobody mentioned this?".

At least I tried to see if a thread already existed before making a new one.

Yeah, and it's worth making a thread about it. I did about half of Vashj'ir, all of Uldum, and about half of Twilight Highlands and the rest via Archaeology and I'm already 85.

It's kind of ridiculous, even without rested EXP.

I don't have that kind of patience, but I will say that it is very nice to give a lower-geared alt a good boost. Lv81 isn't too hard to obtain even without rested by archaeology and gives a pretty significant boost, even if you're wearing 200s; some classes get major abilities at 81 as well.

Between that, and Lv80 BoEs dropping, and the easy-to-make BoE crafted gear, it isn't too hard to get an alt started in Cata.

I finished my last 20% to 85 on archaeology alone, the xp must scale with level right? Now I'm going back and doing twilight highlands for things to disenchant and gold. Really, it seems not a bad way to go about it. Get the xp bonus while not capped, then get the gold for quests.

Yeah, it does scale with level. It takes something like 400-something finds to gain a whole level, I believe.

Hence me being 488 Archaeology already. Smiley: grin

A guildie of mine is lvling purely via archaeology and bgs. lol. He'll be the last one to 85 with no rep or anything. I can't really talk, I'll be second to last cuz I've been slacking.

I was getting like 27k xp per find last nite as rested after I got tired of questing, though. Love that!

Rep is easy enough to get, though. Just do the quest lines to open up the tabards, then do dungeons while wearing the tabards.

Yes Archeology is nice exp but if the dig sites are fairly far apart it's pretty much the same as doing a quest without the gold or gear as theo said.

I'm going for the loremaster for each zone I'm 83 after just finishing Vashj'ir and a few quests into Mount Hyjal. I hope I can be close to 85 after Hyjal and then finish up and get sheer gold for everything in the last 3 zones. Though I have gained quite a bit of gold just from quests and selling worthless soulbound greens. 16g weapon > 4g mail piece I won't wear. BoE's I have saved, will either vendor them or sell them on AH or give to guild to DE.

The gold gains are amazing, even when you're not capped on XP.

From Hyjal, I've gotten ~1500g from Soulbound vendor trash, and looting everything I kill. I didn't sell any crafting mats or BoEs (I DE'd them).

From Vash'jir, I got probably 1200g or so (I equipped a lot of greens, whereas in Hyjal, they were all side-grades or useless).

That's nearly 3k from just 2 zones. I could only imagine what a whole Lv83+ zone would give, if one were capped on XP.

And imagine how much gold I'll gain from going back and questing, having gotten a vast majority of my exp via Archaeology. Smiley: grin

Saving that bit for when I'm done with 525 Archaeology, though, which should take me another day or two.

See when I see this (and experienced it) I don't think 'the gold gains are amazing', I think 'the inflation is huge'. Because everyone is getting that much money. Gold gain is only amazing if you're the only one getting it. :P

Except NPCs, who don't raise their prices. All of those vanity mounts/pets/etc, especially those in Wrath that one might not have bought yet due to the prices set on them, 310% Flying, etc.

Crafting mats can always be farmed yourself.

So... what's left to buy out of the AH? BoE Purples?

Crafting mats have always been able to be 'farmed yourself', yet that hasnt stopped me and 5 million others from making profitable ventures off said mats in the past. Hell for the last two expansions vanilla mats have been the number one sellers on the servers i frequent. although im sure thats changed now with cata.

My point is that each expansion always causes inflation. so... whats your point?

My point is, is that inflation only applies to optional items that you buy from the AH.

Things that you really need that can be found nowhere else, are found on NPCs, who never change their prices. Last I checked, Eternium Threads are still ~2.5g for example. They have been, since Burning Crusade.

That Traveller's Mammoth in Dalaran? 16k with Exalted, and it is still 16k with Exalted.

And yes, mats vary in prices, and people do buy them, but only those people who are in a hurry, or who don't want to spend a little work in obtaining the said mats themselves.

I've made plenty a gold off of those people, farming the mats and selling them. If they want to pay to get something they could easily get themselves, hey, I'm not complaining.

But to anyone complaining about "Inflation", well. There are ways to obtain this stuff yourself if you think the prices are too high.

Repairs and reagents surely aren't affected by inflation *rollseyes*
