Edit: okay, I have a question. Relative linking works on Wowhead, but would it be possible for it to work here also? I'm kinda used to typing in [link=/spell=5025] rather than [link=http://www.wowhead.com/spell=5025] (or, actually, url= on Wowhead), but I could adjust.

Likely not. The problem is that our forum software serves more than just WoW.

I assume for a similar reason we can't have context linking, where we type [wowitem]Fel Leather Boots[/wowitem] and get Fel Leather Boots
minor gripe, and i'm not sure if it's a browser setting on my end:
when i mouseover the item link, i get the tooltip popup, but also a small popup that displays the url of the link. if the link is near the top or bottom of the window, or if the tooltip window is huge (like the fel leather boot example with gearset info) then the url popup will obscure the tooltip popup.

Given how useful that mousover url is in all other circumstances I'll happily scroll up a little to see all of the mouseover tooltip.
Mouseover URL is redundant as it also shows in the bottom left corner of most browsers.
Please "talk up" if your comprehension white-shifts. I will use simple-happy language-words to help you understand.

The problem with linking by name is that there are multiple items in the game with the same name. It would be really annoying if you get used to linking by name for your 5man blues and purples but get totally annoyed when trying to link that new 10 man heroic purple you got only to always have the non-heroic version display (or vice versa).
What if linking by name always linked to the normal version?
As it is now, we have to look up the item and then hyperlink text to make it work. If you keep that option, we'd still be able to manually link to the heroic stuff.

How about a variation of it like [wowitem]25686[/wowitem] or [wowitem]item=25686[/wowitem]?
