What's going down on Tuesday at 12:01?Follow

#1 Dec 02 2010 at 8:01 PM Rating: Decent
I've been spending the last hour or so trying to find out how Blizz is going to implement Cata at 12:01am. Anyone know? I did see a blue post saying that there will not be server maintenance on Tuesday, but I haven't managed to find whether they're going to need to do a server restart to flip the switch, or if it will be like the holiday events and the changes will just happen at the specified time.

They just flip a switch and Cata turns on. That's what has happened in the past.

So, if we're logged in shortly before switch-flipping time, does the new stuff just start working at 12:01 without needing to log out and back in? This will be my first time being already updated and patched at the moment of release, since I stood in line to pick up my pre-order for Wrath and then had to go through lots of installation and updating.

Yeah that's what I'm wondering too Furlis. I've never been around for a release date before, and I have the digital download as well, so I should be good to go at 12:01. I'm just wondering if I'll have to log out and log back in or will I be able to just go get my azeroth flying and herbalism skill?

It should just flip over at 12:01 PST, yes.

Cool! I won't be able to do much at that moment because I have work the next morning, but it'll be fun to try some stuff right away at release time. I hope that the pre-release patching (such as the one I'm downloading right now) will prevent any major glitches at release time.

I have work ... and midnight PST is 3am EST.

I have to wait until I get home that evening. Sucks to be me! On a positive note, when it goes offline for quick fixes and restarts, I won't be spamming the reconnect button and cursing "GG BLIZZZZ"

soooo, for those of us who plan to be sittin there at 11:59pm waiting for the flip to cata, where exactly is the "there" we should be waiting to get into the new cata zones? i dont even have a clue yet as to where these new zones are in the world.... "I am not prepared!"

I second demegods' request. I haven't had time to research the new zones much ( working construction is bone-numbingly tiring, especially at age 40+}. I understand, vaguely, that there are 2? starter zones, Hyjal, and some underwater area. Any details, or clarification?

I won't be playing until probably Friday night, so hopefully I'll miss the initial mad rush to the new zones, and mob camping. Of course, with my luck, Blizzard will have the servers down all week-end for extended maintenance.

I'll be sitting in SW by the flight trainer.

1) train world flying
2) port to the argent crusade, hand in quests
3) use druid port to go to moonglade, fly into hyjal and start questing.

Anyone in Australia (like me), or from a similar timezone should keep in mind that ... Well, timezones being what they are, midnight PST release won't be a midnight Australian time release. So, Cata changes for those of us Down Under mean that we won't be hitting up new worgen/goblin characters until about 7pm our time. We'll just have to wrestle some giant poisonous spiders or spend some time trying to inter-breed kangaroos with dingoes, to create the greatest land mount ever, while we wait.

Blizz source for good measure.

Now would be a really good time to get a backup of your working Wow directory. Of course, I'm sure we wont get any new posts of someone having an upgrade issue and reinstalling the entire game. Nah, that couldn't happen.

Isn't that awesome though? I mean it launches at 7pm, you get so much more time to play it right away without going through severe sleep deprivation. I wish we got it at 7pm, who cares what the number of the day is, you're not actually waiting any longer then anyone else.

i think blizz should have really done this NYE2000 style, with a midnight release in every timezone. then we could have watched the news all day and seen the fireworks and celebrations in every major city along the way.

I imagine it will be like the start of a Alterac Valley BG with 100 people running in place in front of the closed gate.

Nothing happening for me at that point. I have my big final project that I have to be able to present due that morning, so I'd be doomed if I logged in right then...

One of the advantages of being on the west coast and playing on an eu account is that the switch for me will actually happen at 3pm Monday afternoon.
Neither myself or my wife work Mondays so we're planning to eat dinner at 2pm and then settle in for the evening.

It would be nice. We on the east coast (USA) get to start at 3AM.. Well.. Those that could ever stay up that late do. There's no way I can stay up that late or if I did I'd get like an hour or two before a huge headache set in. I'll just try and pick up a copy from Walmart after work.

I'm try to get my Druid to 60 before then so I can get old world flying as soon as I can. Want to visit a lot of the places I've seen while traveling that were inaccessible before now. I had already been to the air strip above IF before and one of my characters ended up at the GY there after the sundering but there have been lots of little places I've seen while traveling between flight points that I want to visit.

I totally agree. I'm not feeling short-changed at all. On the one hand, it'd be nice to sleep in, get up, roll a goblin and then proceed to blow half of Azeroth up. But, on the other hand, I'm not being held back or kept from anything at all. Plus, I guess I could always sleep in til 7pm!

Nothing special - everyone will be busy buying it, downloading it or fighting with each other to queue in.

Apart from the millions who have already bought Cata, downloaded Cata and will be waiting online on Monday night for the launch of Cata.

Well isn't this wonderful... for Wrath I had my pre-order in hand before launch; this time, my pre-order is scheduled for delivery on Tuesday. I just had something scheduled for next-day delivery that ended up being two days late...

I'm in California and have a EU account. Cata will go live on the EU servers at 3pm my time on Monday. I was happy to know about this as I thought it would be the opposite (US servers would get it first). This time is confirmed on the official Battle net page.

Thus, I should be playing tomorrow by 7/8pm PST.

Your comment didn't even come close to answering my question. I asked how Blizz is going to implement Cata, not what people are going to be doing once Cata goes live. You need to go level your reading comprehension skills.

I'm in the UK, so Cata goes live at 11pm tonight. If the WOTLK launch is anything to go by, there won't be anything in-game to announce that the change has happened, it'll just be there at the appointed time. I only saw that the WotLK changes had come in when I did a "who" search on a name and found a couple of DK's.

This time I'll park myself at the flight trainer like Xsarus.
