Anyone else blindsided by this? I've logged back in sometime after 3:00 AM with nothing in the News panel. Now servers are down four hours for "scheduled maintenance". I'm wondering if they managed to fix Arena. And Wintergrasp. And Naxxramas. And... /cough

Ehh...since when does 'Emergency Maintenance' = scheduled maintenance?

I think scheduled maintenance is maintenance planned in advance, whereas emergency maintenance would be...you know...a response to an emergency? Just sayin'.

I'm sure they're keeping the servers down longer just to **** us all off.

its estimated time they really have no idea when it will be up.
so they say estimated 9 am when they JUST start to edit code and try to fix it during play time.

they don't even have a fix they have it down to try and do a live repair so it could be days.
thus the emergency not scheduled and they can estimate all day and extend extend extend its not gonna change the fact they are just trying to fix something they broke and have no idea how to fix until they analyze all the coding in detail.

I'd expect it to be down all weekend to try and fix pvp cause that's basically how long a live fix will take. again the programmers only care about pleasing the PvP crowd they don't care about PvE players at all.

I DEMAND MY PLAYTIME!!! ROMP ROMP ROMP! OH NO IT'S GODZILLA!!!

Anyways, I'm a little disappointed I wanted to get right back to grinding quests/heroics but this is important. It shut down my server for a minute once because of WG. The whole server! I couldn't level because it'd just wipe out waves of us. It's always a good thing that they are fixing WoW, of course it can be a little annoying when the server is down.

usually the more they try to fix things the more the mess it up. i say they should have kept the arenas and winters battle down for good. it hurt no body but the OMGWTF kiddies that loved to Play the warcraft version of Mortal Kombat.

I don't mind a wait. I'd just like to have an Idea how long. it's like the DMV I guess.

Considering they disabled Wintergrasp so that PvE players could continue to play without having the realm crash after the end of every Wintergrasp battle, I'd say you're pretty much dead wrong on that one. I knew tons of people who were milking Wintergrasp while it was creating problems. Do Wintergrasp, get all the rewards for the battle (honor/marks/etc.) and then the battle ends. Realm crashes, and when it comes back up Wintergrasp starts again. Go back in for more marks and honor. Battle ends. Realm crashes, and when it comes back up...oh look! The battle for Wintergrasp is starting all over again!

Cynicism is always countered by observation. Keep trying, though.

I manage software on a very large scale. When you have to perform an emergency maintenance you can give your best, educated guess at how long it will take to restore performance. Sometimes you're completely wrong.

See, when you perform a planned maintenance, you have a plan. It's laid out with procedural steps, each of which generally has a known duration. This planning is part of the preparation for a maintenance and by the time the deployment date rolls around, it's generally pretty close to the mark. When you go in to an emergency maintenance, you have had much less time to work out the procedures. There's a larger chance of unexpected problems popping up.

It'll be done when it's done.

Any old FFxi players will remember, not only would servers go down for maintenance for days at a time, sometimes weeks, but they would happen without any warning, at any time without any reason given, or an estimated time for completion.
I can remember one weekend, me and three other friends got together at a friends apartment, his woman was gone for the weekend, so we all brought T.V's, beer, and planned a weekend to do nothing but level our mains for 2 days. Losers weekend I know, but sometimes you gotta get away from the women. Anyway, logged in, picked our spot, then DC'ed. All freaking weekend, servers down for whatever reason. Weekend ruined.
WOW at least lets us know whats going on.

that's why it's like the DMV. you can never guess the wait. lol

I'm looking at the login screen, and the last update was at 8:50pm yesterday. Being an IT person myself, I can understand how maintenance can be longer than expected. However, they have dropped the ball on communication. What should be done is at say 3 and a half hours, if it doesn't look like you're gonna make your previously estimated deadline, you update the user base with a new estimate. That is how good administrators communicate.

I hate when I'm rolling an alt toon and these kids come up to me and wanting to duel when they are 10-15 levels higher while I'm trying to level. I decline and then they start begging "PLZ?" and emote /crying. How lame. I just put them in my ignore. On the other hand if a toon wants to duel and is like 10 level lower to test their equipment and I have some free time. (LOL) That's different.

<sigh> Sorry guys, my fault. :) Blizz obviously knows I need to clean my house, and by taking WoW offline, it seems like I'll be forced to do so. <shakes fist> Damn you Blizzard!! Though, with the unexpected downtime this morning, I went grocery shopping so we can eat...lol

lol wintersgrasp is PVP content you fight other players for rewards. when they dissabled it they gave the shard buff to both alliance and horde automatically so that to be fair to both PvP and PvE players. BUT the only dissabled it cause it was bugged, it would crash the WHOLE server PvP places too.

if it just affected the PvE dungeons and NOT the PvP area's i guaranteed blizzard would have waited til they had a repair patch next tuesday and not a friday fix.

no matter how you try to reason it out blizzard has always been more PvP friendly than PvE... thus all the class nerfs. no one likes the class nerfs on PvE side at all but the PvP players love them for "balance" in play.

Obviously Pallier doesn't like PvP and is intent on making MULTIPLE posts to make us all well aware of that point.

He also obviously doesn't read the patch notes and take note of all of the changes made in the patches that are designed to improve PvE abilities/content.

Also, he obviously doesn't raid, because a side-effect of the recent problems is that Naxx has been almost unplayable and this also needed to be fixed along with Arenas and WG. Naxx is NOT a PvP aspect of the game, but the entry level raid at 80 that everyone who has any aspirations of raiding wants to do.

I do not personally like PvP either, but Pallier is just going to have to learn to live with the fact that a very large portion of the WoW population LOVES PvP and does WG, Arenas, BGs, etc. and they are a MAJOR portion of the game for a lot of people. As a business, Blizzard would be utterly, completely, and totally stupid to keep Wintergrasp and Arenas offline for any longer than absolutely necessary. They would also alienate a ton of players who enjoy the PvE side of the game if they did not fix an issue that was affecting players in Naxxaramus.

I mean seriously dude, you don't like PvP... SO WHAT! Try to see it from a business perspective and understand that pissing off at least half of your subscriber base by not fixing PvP related problems is financially a really bad idea.

They're starting to come back up. An extra 45 minutes isn't that bad.

Now all I have to do is wait for Emerald Dream.

I'll let them have any downtime they want just to make raiding possible again. We've got the stuff to do Sarth+3, but haven't been able to raid well for 2 or 3 weeks.
