Need help decreasing aggro as Shadow PriestFollow

I'm very confused to say the least, I reached level 52 yesterday and wanted to try and start on the Windsor Quest in BRD. I managed to get into a party that already had a higher full holy priest so I was able to stay shadow and try and deal damage.

I leveled up a lock to 60 before and never drew aggro like I did last night. Once the Tank went in on the mobs I would use my DOT, then Vampiric Embrace and then maybe a Mind Blast or Mind Flay. No matter what I did once the MB or MF went off whether it was 1,2 or 3 mobs they would all come after me right away.

Could someone more knowledgable help me out why when I was only attacking the one guy that the Tank and everyone else was beating on that everyone came after me.

I tried this without the Vampiric Embrace thinking that was what it was since the healing, but even without that they still came at me. Would my low level make a difference?

You stopped using VE and you still drew aggro from ALL the mobs, even though you were single targeting to DPS, and the MT initiated the fight -- Something doesn't sound right there, at all.

Wait another second or two before attacking, and nix usage of any spell that says "high amount of threat" in the tooltip, like (I think, been ages since I played my priest) mind blast.

Other options include getting a better tank. ;)

The shadow affinity talent will reduce threat from shadow damage by 25% for 3 talent points. The silent resolve talent will reduce your threat from all spells by 20% for 5 talent points.

If you choose not to get these talents, then aggro will be your constant companion. And you will die.

QFT.

And the emphasized section needs to add the phrase "repeatedly and painfully."

It was the warrior's problem.

Simple as that.

Ideally, I'd agree with you. However, a shadow priest has many ways of pulling aggro, even from a decent tank.

First and foremost - use of Mind Blast. This is a big no-no, unless you can gaurantee that it's a kill shot. The damage:threat ratio on this one is too high. If used too early, the tank hasn't got the threat built up that he needs to hold the mob. And you'll get YOUR face melted.

VE generates a lot of aggro. In a party of 5 (assuming everyone's hurt and in range) generates 5x the threat of a heal spell of the same strength. Why 5x? 'cause you're healing 5 people at the same time. Sometimes more, if pets are involved. Additionally, you have what ever threat is generated by the the Shadow spell you used to proc VE. If someone else (say, the party warlock) uses a shadow spell to proc VE, you still get the VE generated threat from the healing.

Bad timing on the healing/non-Shadow nuking. For a Shadow Priest, timing is everything for aggro control. Too early, and you'll be taking a dirt nap. Too late, and you're ineffective.

Shadow Affinity and Silent Resolve are a must for any Group PvE Shadow Priest - for survival. For a non-Shadow Priest in a Group PvE mode, Silent Resolve is a must.

I've healed and done damage in every instance in the game as a shadow specced priest. I know how a shadow priest's aggro works :P.

He said that he didn't use VE and still was pulling aggro. There's just no way that a level 52 priest in brd can generate enough threat to out-do a warrior. And even then there is taunt.

Also, Mind blast (as of 2.0?) no longer causes extra threat.

Fade. And talent points. And no mind blast. I'll take hate from a 60 warrior if I just spam it. VE is just as bad.

Low level should make no notice after battle begins.

LOL

Seriously, I used the threat reduction talents and shadow word pain + vampiric embrace and had no problem with aggro.

If you get a threat meter and watch what you are doing, you can melt mob faces too. The key is to watch your threat meter so you know the limit of what you can do.
