just purchased wow and had a few questions before i acctivate my account that i can't seem to find answers to in any faq's or by searching. your time and forebearance are appreciated.
1. are 30 day subscriptions 30 consecutive calendar days? if i activate my subscription today, does it expire 30 days from now regardless of how many actual days i play?
2. will all current accounts be able to take advantage of tbc release or do you have to buy the expansion pack to receive upgrades? Particularly, if i activate with a general account, will i be able to create an alliance shaman (draenal?)?
3. It's my understanding that once you pick your sever type (pvp or pvd) your stuck with it unless you pay to transfer. could someone please clarify?
4. do you have to buy a new account to play a new character? can you develope multiple characters as long as you play one at a time? can you change class, or race even and what's involved?
5. looking for a forum discussion on pros and cons of each server type; can someone point me to one.

1. You pay for 30 consecutive days, you have to pay again in 30 days, no matter how many days you played on your account.

2. Not sure what you mean. You have to buy a copy of the original game, then you have to buy the expansion to upgrade your account.

3. You can have up to 50 characters per account. 10 characters per server. So you could play one on PvP and another on PvE.

4. See #3

5. On PvP, when you go to a contested area (not "owned" by either faction) anybody from the other faction can attack you whenever they want. On PvE you can only attack another faction member if they are flagged for PvP (you get flagged if you attack guards from the other faction, or anybody that shows up as PvP when you mouse over them. If you attack somebody that attacks you, you are flagged as well.)

Regardless of your playtime, it will expire 30 days from when you purchased it. I've taken a small "break" but I'm still paying for my account.

In order to take advantage of the expansion pack, you need to buy it and install it. You will still receive patches for World of Warcraft, but without the expansion you cannot reach level 70, pick one of the new races, or go to any of the new areas that are only within the expansion.

You can create up to 10 characters per server. On a pvp server you can only choose horde or alliance. You may not make a horde character and an alliance character on the same pvp server. On a PvE you can create horde or alliance.

If you reach level 60 on a server, and wish to transfer over to a server with that character, a paid transfer must be done. If you wish to start over on a new server, you can just select the server, and start a new character. Hope that answers that question?

Sounds like you're coming from FFXI. You only pay a flat rate for your subscription. With that subscription you can play on any servers, and have up to 8 characters per server. You can create multiple characters without additional costs.

Yes you can play multiple characters (one at a time of course). You can have an Orc Hunter, or a Troll Shaman, or an Undead Priest, etc.

Only 3 server types really. PVE, PVP, and RP (Role Playing). Pros and cons vary. PVP is world pvp, meaning at any given time you can pretty much be attacked (doesn't apply to certain zones). PVE you must initiate or flag yourself for pvp in order to attack or be attacked by the other faction. RP is filled with Roleplayers who act out their character in game. RP servers also have PVE RP or PVP RP servers.

According to the Official site - you can have up to 10 characters on a given server and up to 50 characters total.

Another quick question while we're on the topic. If I upgraded to the expansion, do I also receive another free months subscription or am I just paying $40 for the new content?

AFAIK the expansion pack does not come with a free month of playtime. So you'd just be paying $40 for the new content.

Yea it's just like when you bought the game itself. When it first came out it was 40-50 I believe. In reality you were only paying for the discs, and not the subscription. Crafty bastards sure know how to milk their audience for all they're worth =P

One more thing regarding server transfers which I didn't see anyone mention yet: I have a feeling you can only transfer from a PVE realm to another PVE realm, and from PVP to PVP...I don't think the RP status of realms affects transfers though, so you could move from PVP to RPPVP, but not from RPPVP to regular RP. I'm not sure about this though and I can't access the official site at the moment so it'd be good if someone could confirm it.
