So I'm guessing that I can't register characters b/c I don't have a premium account, but I can't find anywhere that says this is true. Can anyone confirm this for me?

You don't register characters. You download WoWReader, and use it to capture your character's info. Then you will automatically have your characters listed in your profile.

The forum FAQ contains useful info and links about WoWReader, I advise you to check them out.

You do not need premium for this service.
