A few questions about a power supplyFollow

#1 Jan 07 2007 at 5:27 PM Rating: Decent
I might actually be getting WoW soon at my house so I dont have to play at my uncles house anymore and I have a compaq 5430us and the power supply is burnt up from an upgraded video card. The power supply is a 235W and my dad says I need something that is atleast twice that for more upgrades. Is there anyone that plays with a 5430us that has upgraded their power supply that can help me. I've looked everyhere for the type of case I need and cant find out. Is it an ATX, AT, MiniAT or MiniATX? I think those are the four types. Is there anyone that can help even if u dont have a 5430us that is computer smart?

Thanks for your help.

I found a replacement power supply for that model of the same wattage, but it was very overpriced. The discription did say that it was an ATX power supply.

Your best bet may be to remove the bad supply, and take it with you to local computer stores so that you can compare. Be sure the replacement is the same shape, so it will fit. Also be sure the connector for the motherboard and power switch (if there is a wire for it) are the same type.

If by power supply you mean battery, my suggestion is play hooked up to the wall. I had an Apple fresh out of the box and the battery goes down right before me as I play this game. It is alot for any laptop. Not to mention, even a decent battery will run you a crazy amount of money.

Thanks I will look for a local computer and check it out. I looked on Best Buy and they have a Antec TruePower Trio 650-Watt ATX CPU Power Supply that is $150 but I may just go through a place around town.

Thanks again

Try to get one that fits, our it will be hanging outside the case (not necessarily a catastrophy, lol). I hope you are fairly certain the power supply is the problem.

I cannot imagine that you are going to put enough upgrades in that oldish box to require a 650W power supply. That is huge.

QFT. And don't take it to a store like CompUSA. Take it to your local hole-in-the-wall computer repair shop. You'll find better deals, aa more knowledgeable staff, and more help than you can possibly imagine. Remember that the big computer chains hire the lowest level persons they can get away with, and charge premium prices.

That motherboard requires a 24 pin power supply connection, so I'd either go to a locol computer hardware store with your old one and find once with the same dimensions to replace it or just search google for "24 pin power supply" and buy one that meets the dimension restrictions in your case.
