Question about Weapon Proficiencies:Follow

#1 Jan 07 2007 at 11:28 AM Rating: Decent
As some of you may know, I am new to the game. I was playing both my Warrior and Paladin and noticed that I am proficient in several different weapons.

Is it important to stay skilled up in those weapons?

What impact (specifically endgame) will not having a specific weapon skilled up if any?

I couldn't find any useful guides to answer my questions, but if you do have such a link then please, share the wealth.

It's really not that important. Skilling up weapons (with the exception of ranged weapons for rogues and warriors) does not take much time at all.

You can skill up a weapon skill with any level weapon and on any level mob. Neither of them matter. If you want to stay skilled up in several just in case you pick up a weapon of that type, that's your choice.

One exception, though. If you are a warrior and you plan to do instances, always keep a 1 hand weapon and a shield with you to tank, and keep them skilled up. Everyone loves a good tank, and a good tank always has a sword (or mace, or axe) and board.

I actually don't have a ton of time, but I want to give you this link:

http://www.wowwiki.com/Main_Page

Unlike FFXI (and other MMOs), Blizzard keeps all of their mechanics transparent and open to the public. In this way, we can get down to playing the game, rather than theory crafting it all.

The wiki site will have everything you need to learn how stats effect each class, weapon skills and how they affect you in combat, wow lore, dungeon guides... well, EVERYTHING.

If you're familiar with FFXI's wiki site (if it's still around, it's been awhile), then you'll feel right at home there.

Here is one page pertaining to weapon skills:

I don't know for sure, but I don't *think* it helps you to level up a skill (after it gets high enough) on a really low level mob.

Maybe I'm thinking that because of FFXI or the fact that after a bit, low level mobs just don't live long enough....

I'm pretty sure that the info about Glancing Blows on that page is outdated because of the weapon skill change in 2.0.1.

Yeah, you can level up on any level mob. My shaman leveled his weapons on harpies in Durotar, when he was in his 20s. I skilled up my ranged weapons at 60 on level 41 trolls in the Hinterlands.

What I mean to say is, is it possible to get a skill up if you're weapon skill is, oh, say 275/300, you are lvl 60 and the mob is level 10 or below?

another words: is there a minimum?

lol, so much for my statement of not having to theorycraft... I could look it up, but I'm lazy atm.

Yes, you could still level up your skill on any mob. It just takes longer once you get closer to the cap.

And something nobody else mentioned yet, the more intelligence you have the faster you level up weapon skills.

Exactly. Once my characters reach level 60 I usually try to max out ALL their skills. It gives me something to do. And for doing so in lower level areas I also enjoy dressing my characters up in some type of theme. It embarrasses them to no end, but I get a perverse pleasure out of it for some reason. This often means they are using both armor and weapons around the level 10 to 15 range. My characters have gained weapon skill against all kinds of mobs at all kinds of levels. This includes them beating on kobolds outside of Goldshire when I was hoping for a Santa hat to drop. And yes, my priest gained a few points in his staff skill, about 285, against level 5 to 8 kobolds. And no, he didn’t get a hat. *sniff*

I’m still highly skeptical about that. I’ve leveled weapon skills and professions on nine level 60 characters as well as another ten or so between the levels of 40 and 58. Among these were high intellect characters and low intellect characters. In two years of playing I’ve not noticed any difference between them. IF there is a difference, it’s so small as to be insignificant.

Rated you up for this, good advice.

As a 60 Rogue, I decided to level up all my melee weapon skills. I noticed that whenever I had a potion of greater intellect and a mage arcane intellect buff, my levelling seemed to go at least twice as fast.

Those 2 buffs (the pots I got for cheap on the AH) more than doubled my existing Int stat, BIG difference.

One thing to look out for, is bugged mobs. Sometimes a mob will be bugged and won't fight back, it will also instantly regen any damage it receives. Those mobs are the best for skilling up weapon skills as you can autoattack them and they never die.

It won't work if the mob is evade-bugged (whenever you hit it, it says "Evades"), and if it's social (comes to the help of the other mobs) it will snap out of its bug-mode and succour its friends if they aggro you.

Had this kind of mob twice, one was a furbolg in northern Felwood (snapped out when another player killed a Den Watcher that called for help), and another is a Servant of... Razelikh maybe? The ones near the dark portal. It snapped out of it when the felguard, feldog combo came and aggroed me (in fact ganked me).

doesn't it say on the int tooltip that it improves the rate at which your weapon skills increase? i think it does, which makes your skepticism unfounded.
