Ahh. F*ck it.

Notice *94* block. Am I out of the loop here? Or am I so tired I am seeing things?

~Taint

EDIT: Erased all previous edits, can someone help me with the linking thingy? I must be doing something wrong.

Maybe they'll be allowing some blocking with 2-handers now? I dunno.

You could get weapons with +armour, so I don't see why not.

[wowitem=25238]Link test[/wowitem]

I'm almost positive there's some weapon already in the game that has block... also a spear iirc... or maybe I'm just thinking of the weapon with armor... not sure...

I didn't think the block mechanic worked without a shield....

Nope, there's no weapons currently in the game with block, and 94 block is sick in the first place (higher than any shield live right now, not counting +block mods).

I saw a Cloth Belt earlier that had a block value on it too... I was very confused.

I'll troll around to see if I can find it.

Edit: Found it!

I can't think of any Clothies at all that can even wear a shield, so I was really confused when I saw this.

Link's not picking it up because of the live vs test. It'll work next week. I'll see about adding syntax to link in separate sources, locales.

the spear makes no sense at all. block is an action you specifically perform with a shield. being a polearm and therefore 2-hand, you cannot have a shield equipped, so you cannot block. bug or useless item.

the cloth item drambuie linked is probably a bug too. note how it says "requires level 70" but the item level is 120? that's just not right. with 50 ilevels over, it should be epic or legendary. and the stats are absolutely crap for ilvl120. apart from the fact it's a pointless item =)
edit: (just as a comparison: t3 chestpieces are some of the best gear ingame now. they have ilvl92, usable at 60. that's 32 ilevels over, compared to 50 on this green junk).

you do get weird stats sometimes, though. some items just have random stats. like a "Plate Belt of ABC" where abc is some random combination of int, sta, block, spelldamage or whatever. some of it makes sense (like leather gloves of the tiger), some of it is just useless. we once had a shield with +shadow damage drop. uhm, yeah, nice...

Draenai use their tail to hold a shield? =D

from a logic point of view, I can understand it. if you've ever fought with a staff IRL, it's very understandable to give a 2-hander a block rating. Game mechanic wise though, who knows. they may be testing out something new.

Perhaps its time for the advent of the onehand spear and shield combo.....

I believe that is parry.
#14 Jan 07 2007 at 9:46 AM Rating: Decent
"Parrying" is when you use a movement to "deflect" the blow to re-direct the swing or shot of your opponent(how do you parry a gunshot O.O)

"Blocking" however is just stopping a blow in place with your weapon, not actively changing the course of its departure. You "brace" for impact. While parry is like sending a satellite to intercept an asteroid coming to earth, block is like putting a forcefield around the planet instead.
#15 Jan 07 2007 at 4:40 PM Rating: Decent
Game-mechanicially, a parry completely prevents the damage. A block in this game reduces the damage dealt by the attack, but doesn't prevent it.

If you're trying to relate it to real-world activities... a parry deflects or stops the attack cold, using your weapon to either redirect or stop. A block uses your shield (or, if this were true) your Spear to slow the attack and reduce the damage dealt.

This doesn't seem at all likely to work, though, since items that grant bonuses (belts with parry, other items with block value) still don't allow them to work if you don't have the proper items equipped (namely a weapon or a shield). It's probably a bug.
