Playing Wow on an external HDD - Can it be done?

Like, installing WoW onto the disk from one computer, then plugging it into another and playing it from the hard drive...

(A car crashed outside my house while i was in the process of wring this, so this was quite interesting for me =D)

I see no reaon why you couldn't.. you may have issues with the transfer speed but if, for whatever reason, you want to go that route.. external, internal.. it's all the same to the computer.

Probably won't work because the application isn't just installed under the C:\Program Files\WorldofWarcraft but there are usually several other registry changes which exist on the C:\Windows system folder.

Try it but don't be surprised if it bombs out. Also, make sure it's a Firewire or USB2.0 external drive otherwise transfer speed will be too slow.

Why don't you just install WOW on both machines?

Installations are non-unique. One istallaction will play on any PC if you copy. Your only problem may be speed.

Nope. I just have the /WoW on a separate partition and I don't even need to do anything when I reinstall it Windows. Friends also copies it from one comp to another, notebooks, hosted their installation and whatnot.

Even if the game did have that issue, which it doesn't, it wouldn't matter. I've installed several games in various drives within my system and never had a problem. As far as the computer is concerned, a hard drive is a hard drive. If it needs to make any registry entries, it'll do that regardless of which drive it's installed.

With WOW, just like what others say, you can just copy the folders to a new drive and play away so the external drive will be fine...

I agree with what the others have said too, if you're going to go that way, USB 2.0 or IEEE 1394 to ensure the transfer rates are there and don't impact your game.

As mentioned in another thread recently (Popular post-Christmas topic!) this is indeed possible and even nicely playable. I have copied my WoW installation to my new portable drive. Plugging it into the 2.0 USB ports on the computer at work, leaves a very playable game. (Although IF tends to spike lag a lot more, this may be the external drive issue, or the crappy wireless network internet I have here. Very remote location, and no landlines.)

Not to mention that WoW makes pretty much zero registry changes. I copied it directly to an internal hard drive that was switched to another computer, and it worked fine. (I can't say the same for some of my other games, though)
