im gonna start playing tomorrow, and it seems a little overwhelming. what do you think the easiest class is to play for a complete noob? i know, i know, it all depends, but relatively speaking surely theres a class that is easier to play than all others.

The races and classes in the game are well balanced. If you make a post asking "What is the best race?" or "What is the best class?". be prepared for flames. There is no uber-class/race. Visit the class forums and read the stickies there. Do your homework instead of asking others to do it for you. In the end, class/race is an individual choice. Pick one you think you will enjoy playing and try it out. In fact, pick several and try them all out. You should also look over Ideggeries Post Beginner's Info.

opinions still welcome

Beyond the standard "try all of the ones which appeal to you and figure out which suits you best" response, I'll offer my own experiences. Note that these might not apply to you.

The first class I rolled was a mage, as I've always been drawn to magic users. I was rubbish. I gave up at level 12 because I just died all the time.

I started a warlock. Much better. Died considerably less frequently. Leveled her to 23 before getting the "ooh, what about X class" itch.

Druid next. Leveled him to 17. Lots of fun. Easy to play, but not as quick as the warlock.

Priest. Made it to 14. More difficult than the druid - less diverse.

Hunter. Leveled to 17. Like warlock, very easy to level (obvious correlation of a pet class). Not really my cup of tea, though.

Back to the druid - leveled him right up, he became my main. Before getting him to 60 I tried a rogue (only to level 10...can't really comment on playability, but it just wasn't me).

After reaching 60 with the druid I started another mage and took him to 60. Completely different story to my first, basically because by that time I knew how the game worked, I had an understanding of how to kite mobs (to an extent), I knew what armour to look for, how to play in groups, etc etc etc. Leveling a mage from 1-20 is more of a challenge than some of the other classes, because it's only at 20 that you start getting some of the vital survival/mana efficiency spells and talents, but after that it's a breeze.

Next alt was a new priest, currently at 43 (and has been for a long time). Again, a different experience...I knew where to put talents, how to play, etc. Definitely more efficient to level than a mage or (resto) druid.

Since then I've taken a warrior to 29 (lots of fun, perhaps average in terms of time efficiency, above average in survivability), another warlock to 23 (same conclusions as the first) and another hunter to 17 (again, same conclusions).

I'm still yet to take a paladin or rogue above 10 or a shaman above 4, so I can't say much about those.

I don't know if that's any help, but it's the best I can offer!

As the above poster said, the classes are all pretty balanced. I honestly think the best thing to do is to try out a few different classes and see which you click with. It's hard to say which is the easiest class really. I know that Warlocks are considered trickier to master than some other classes so maybe they wouldn't be the best bet. Others say druids aren't beginner-friendly but I don't know if I agree. Similarly, a lot of people will tell you that hunters are the easiest to play, but I never really got on with hunters...

Sorry, I realise that's not hugely helpful! Personally, I found it frustrating to play a cloth-wearing class when I started, as I found I died an awful lot. I got on much better with classes with more survivaility. Perhaps try a warrior or maybe a rogue?

His second post is a direct quote from the FAQ. I think he was trying to quote it to show he'd read it, and still wanted opinions anyway.

Least I hope so, the alternatives are to horrible to consider *shudder*

In my opinion, the easiest class to play is a hunter. It also happens to be my favorite of all classes. Once you reach level ten you can tame a pet and from that point on your character will never have to be alone. Hunters kill fairly quickly, have a high survival rate and they have little down time. All in all it’s a very good first class to play. The biggest problem with hunters is that they are so popular. At high levels it can be difficult to get into pickup groups. But if you are in a good guild you shouldn’t have to worry about that.

My second favorite class is the rogue. Rogues kill quickly. They have multiple ways of getting of trouble. And if you keep their weapons up to date you can get away with mediocre armor. However, rogues do have some down time. But with bandages and food it doesn’t take them long to stealth back into the fray. Unfortunately, rogues are about as popular as hunters and can sometimes have trouble getting into pickup groups at high levels.

Though I feel that the popularity of both hunters and rogues is a testament in and of itself as to how fun those two classes are to play.
