WoW on portable harddrivesFollow

so im moving in with a friend and dont have money to buy a pc/laptop for myself, my friend however has a pc.

my idea was instead of installing WoW on his pc i would install it on a portable harddrive so that his harddrive would remain untouched , and whenever i wanted to play just attach my harddrive and im ready to go .

this sounds like it should work , but thought i would ask here first before i possibly waste money .

so should this work fine or would there be problems ?

thanks in advance

A guildie of mine did this. He had 2 computers and if he couldn't play WoW on the good one, he played on the not-so-good one. He installed it on a USB Hard Drive and just moved it between computers.

Seemed to work fine for him.

If you do use this method, make sure that you are using at least a USB 2.0 drive or a Firewire. a USB 1.1 will give you some lag when the data files are being accessed.

Something else to bear in mind... I recently took WoW to my parent's house and played it off a USB drive (ok, technically it's my video iPod, but it still works)... if you can find one that's about 6 gigs, you'll be golden...

It will work, but even w/ a USB 2.0 connection, it will be slowwwwwwwwwww.

USB 2.0 transfers 400 mb/sec, whereas a SATA bus can trasnfer 1.5gb/sec. I've never tried it so I can't say how it would actually play out, but I would suspect that you'll find it "laggy" in busy areas as your computer is desperately trying to load everyone around you and their gear.

Good point.

IF the PC that you are going to use has SATA, they do make external SATA drives now.

was going to recommend the same thing. transfer rates are quite slow on USB 2.0 and even firewire. If they have external SATA or just SATA you can get an external drive for it. But when you say 'to the crappy computer' I am going to assume that they do not have one.

If you are going USB, verify that your friend has USB 2.0 as others have stated. If not, you can easily add a USB 2.0 expansion card in the computer.

If you do end up shopping for an external HD, here is one tip to get more for your money. If you already have a 3.5" HD, or can find a deal on one, you can then buy a case to enclose it for about $20. That is what I did, and it is a solid aluminum one that protects it well, and keeps it cool.

Just to confirm that this does indeed work well. I was gifted a 120g portable drive this christmas and tried it. Even on my crappy work computers it works well enough to BG with. The only noticable times of lag occur in IF around the AH/Bank area. (But then of course, when is it not laggy there?)

Interestingly enough, a few new mobos can actually hot swap SATA drives. I found that very interesting when I read that about my current MOBO.

Anyways, USB 2.0 isn't THAT bad for an external HD... though you will see a little more lag I immagine due to the lower transfer rates. Firewire would be the next step up, and then of course ATA or SATA. I doubt you could get away with it, but they have expansion cards that let you connect either SATA or IDE HDs in the back of the PC, not an "external" but just a normal HD. But, if your company is a pain about that type of stuff...

I would be careful with this one. If your network security team is even remotely competent they will be watching for these and many other ports, and you may find your playtime an unwelcome subject at your next performance review or maybe even exit interview.

whoops, I suppose it's a little to early in the year to post responses in the right thread.
