Treasure Chest EtiquetteFollow

Maybe this is just my gripe I don't know, but I am going to put it out there anyway.

[rant]I hate it when I am exploring a new dungeon, fighting my butt off killing mobs equal to my level. Get midway through a dungeon and happen to see a treasure chest on the mini map(dwarf racial Smiley: smile). Get exicted and try to go for it, patiently fight my way to it, carefully kill the mobs around it(usually there are 2 or more surrounding a chest). Then get all excited because I can finally open the chest. Open the chest and.... oh god damnit... Only thing to be found in the chest is a glass of cold milk, or some crappy piece of cheese.[/rant]

I am wondering, should there be some kind of etiquette when it comes to looting treasure chests. I for one take everything out of the chest regardless of if I want the items or not. I feel that by taking everything the chest will dissappear and eventually respawn with the possability of even better items in it.

There is no reason not to take everything from the chest. Even if it is a practically worthless item. If you don't want to take up that precious inventory space, I can relate, but the very least, take the items then discard the items, don't leave them in the chest, if you do that the chest will stay there, only to have some poor soul come along, get excited about finding a chest only to find crap in it. It's heart breaking when that happens.

So what's your feelings on this, do you take everything (even if some of the items are junk) just to have the chest despawn and eventually respawn with the potential to have better items in it, or do you just take what you want and leave the crap in there?

Edit: As a side note, I know it is frustrating when it happens to me, and I have an advantage finding chests with my dwarf, I can't imagine how frustrating it must be for humans, and NE, or other races that don't have the ability to see treasures in thier mini-map.

Being Friendly with the Bloodsail Buccaneers I spent a lot of time wandering through their camps and treasure chests. What I found was, basically, chests that have been partially looted will respawn at the same time as chests that are completely looted. Since it won't cause anything to appear faster, I'll leave stuff that I don't want in the chest for the next guy to take.

I have noticed with some chests (I'm not sure if it's all of them) that after a few minutes of being looted they fade and disappear. SFK for instance has several chests. Some Locked, some open, changes every time I run. If I loot a chest in the beginning, usually there is one in the main courtyard area, it is gone by the time I am done with the instance. I usually only take what is needed. Its a money run, solo at that, so no bother on my part.

A lot of the lower level chests can in fact spawn only crap loot. Only once have I received a blue item from a chest in SFK which is a low level instance. Even some chests that I find in searing gorge have the occasional trash. I think they are the same as mobs where it is a random generated drop with the same percentages.

Etiquette wise, if what I think is true, leaving other loot in the chest will still despawn it; not effecting future pulls. If you open a chest shortly after someone else, I'm assuming you are SoL to whatever they left.

As one of the Forsaken, if I see a dwarf behind me I'll leave him a piece of cheese. They seem to be made of the stuff.

On the same note, I get a little peeved when I have worked hard in a practically deserted area (having not see anyone in my general area for at least 20 minutes or heard anything on general) and saw a chest there, cleared all the mobs out only to have someone walk up and open the chest as I am finishing off the last mob and wave or laugh at me then run off either leaving crap behind or nothing at all. I realize the chest does not have my name on it, but wouldn't common courtesy dictate that you leave the chest alone and have it in your mind they're getting to it after the fight or at least ask them if they're going after it? Maybe I'm silly.

I unintentionally did that once, I was in the troll area in dun morough (really can't remember the name), and a guy was fighting a troll, but I didn't see him, I heard the sound in the distance so I figured he was close but elsewhere and had no clue about the chest. But as I started opening it, he came running up with the troll still hitting him, and he called me an ***. I realized I was "stealing" his chest, so I didn't take anything and told him to relax I didn't take anything. That was actually the first time I had ever even seen a chest in the game too.

QFT. Nothing makes me homicidal faster than working to clear the area around a chest just to have someone loot it as I finish the last mob.Smiley: glare

Loot the chest and wait for the respawn. Everything comes to those who wait.

Chest looting etiquette:

  • If you are part of a group, roll for who gets to loot the chest.
  • If you see another person of your faction killing mobs near a chest, let him loot it. He did the work, he should get the reward.
  • If you are on a PvE server and are of the opposite faction of the guy fighting the mobs, it's OK to loot it out from under him.
  • If you are on a PvP server and are of the opposite faction of the guy fighting the mobs, wait until he's killed the last one, then kill him and loot his chest.

I am a good sport when it comes to chests.

I will always let someone take one before me. Maybe its the girl in me, since you guys all seem to think girls are all mean (taking that from another thread), I could care less, since 99/100 chests only have junk or junk and a green im not hurt in the slightest.

Winterspring is my best place of kindness, amongst the furbolg im very happy. If i could tame a furbolg that would make me uber happy, thus that is why im working at my trinket for both of my characters.

Back OT - If someone there is grinding with me, I make it a point to let them know, they can have the chest if they promise to leave my area shortly after and dont come back for an hour or so. Generally they will oblige.

But since most times its someone of the opposite faction, I just let them take it and keep killing. Since the best drops i have ever had came of the acutual creatures who cares?
