Hi, does anyone know how big Azeroth is? (square meters)
I have searched many places on the net, but I have not found it.

It's not measured in meters.

Sorry.

i think it has been compared to about the size of Rhode Island.

Well, in theory it could be measured in yards since the game _does_ use that system of measurement (at least in the US version; I wouldn't be suprised if the EU version just replaced 'yard' with 'meter' even though it's not the exact same length) and the conversion would be simple enough.

As to then taking that size... eh. No clue. =/

Here's someone on the O-boards that actually tried to calcuate it out. Take it for what it's worth, but he doesn't calculate area, just length.

http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=52865344&sid=1

In summary, he concludes that Kalimdor is 9.22 miles long.

In a related thread here:

http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=52905421&sid=1

One of the follow on posters concluded that the continents had the following surface areas:

30 square miles for Kalimdor.
26 square miles for Eastern Kingdoms.

[Note: this is pre-expansion, before the added landmasses.]

My handy dandy calculator tells me that those convert to:

77699643 square meters for Kalimdor
67339690 square meters for Eastern Kingdoms

and therefore 145039333 square meters for Azeroth. Excluding islands and oceanic waters and expansion land masses.

How accurate is it? I have no clue! :)

I think someone (not me) should get their character to the top of the continents, and run from top to bottom. Time how long it takes, then run from side to side. Judge an average persons speed of... I don't know 8mph tops? If it takes an hour to run from side to side... 8 miles, 3 hours top to bottom 24 miles then get the square miles which would be... I dunno lol. All of this wouldn't make sense anyways because there is no real judge how fast one can run, nevermind the fact there are no straight paths from side to side or top to bottom.

So all in all, no clue.

edit: while typing this the post above me was done... i wasn't... too far off??? lol

See I was thinking differently, I was thnking take a human character to the top of one of the continents and walk from the northern most point, to the southern most point. Count the number of southward steps that are taken. You must walk straight north and south, if a path is not open to go straigh south you have to walk directly east or west to create a new north and south path, and resume counting. Then figure an average male step from back heel to front heel is aroun 3ft, just do the math from that point.

Then do the same going east to west and then you have your square footage. Takes more time and effort than I am willing to put forward.

Example of calculating
l
.l
.l
l
..l
l

The north and south length of this is 6 steps, or 18ft.

Just because it isn't all in a straight line the north to south counting starts and stops at the exact same point on the east-west access grid, so the length would still be the same. Of course this wouldn't give an exact square footage of the island because the island isn't a rectangle but it would give a rough idea. Why don't you go ahead try it out and tell us what you come up with.

This subject has come up twice before:
http://wow.allakhazam.com/forum.html?forum=21&mid=1154691444153935427
and
http://wow.allakhazam.com/forum.html?forum=21&mid=114593417278926722

The first time this subject came up, I ran a level 1 from Orgrimarr (Durotar) to Everlook (Winterspring) to Cenarion Hold (Silithus).

Quote:
here's what I did:

11:52 Start @ Valley of trials
11:59 Ogrimar
12:05 The Barrens
12:16 Ashenvale
... 5 deaths
12:36 Felwood
... 21 deaths
... Hit L2 from discoveries
... Armor was trash before leaving felwood
... 4 more deaths in tunnel to Winterspring
1:51 Winterspring
... 2 deaths
1:55 Everlook
... Hearthed to Valley of trials (all fair in love and races)
2:04 The Barrens
... 4 deaths, all in southern Barrens
2:28 Thousand Needles
... 6 deaths, all after Freewind Post
... hit L3 from discoveries
3:14 Tanaris
...15 deaths, but LONG, LONG corpse runs
4:06 Un'goro Crater
... 14 deaths, but 3 were unnecessary (futzed around Marshall's retreat)
4:57 Silithus
... 1 death
5:02 Cenarian Hold
