I've walked halfway into Desolace and the map isn't drawing. I'm standing in a sea of brown (on the Map Screen, of course).
Any ideas?

You need to hit various "key areas" to draw that portion of the map. If you are just following a road and not seeing any of the "You have discovered ..." messages, then the game will not add anything to your map.
