Christmas is almost here (for those of you that celebrate it) and many of your friends/family members go out and search through crowded stores and spend hours on the internet getting people gifts to put a smile on your face.

Eventhough your Grandma may not be on top of the latest fashions and gets you the most god awful looking sweater, she did mean well and spent her own money on it so that's all that should matter. A lot of kids and young adults don't have the income to spread around presents like the adults so just be polite smile and always say "thank you" which will mean more to them than if you got them a gift at all.

Christmas isn't just about God or receiving presents but it helps make everyone feel good and helps tear people away from the hassles of work and bills, (at least just for one day) so keep others feelings into consideration and help everyone have a Merry Christmas....

**And btw, Merry Christmas to you all hope your holidays go well :)

Jesus, family, presents, food, blah blah blah. The only thing important on December 25th is the Miami Dolphins playing on Monday Night Football.

Seriously though, Merry Christmas to everyone.

Smiley: confused

I know that the holiday has been taken over by corperations and basically become a reason to induce a two-month marketing blitz, but I thought that christmas was, in fact, just about god.

Or more accurately, it is just about the birth of the godchild into this world, about god sending his only son down to us, only to have him sacrifice himself to save our souls for the coming judgement.

Unless I was lied to when I was in catholic school and when I actually followed an organized religion...

I really don't mean to nitpick or try to be an *** in your "lets all be nice to each other in the spirit of the holiday" thread, but it is a huge pet peave of mine when people do not realize why they are celebrating on a certain day.

F cking bengals fans. I f cking hate you and your goddamned skyline bullsh t that you try to shovel off on us poor saps that have been stuck here in a relocation. The bengals f cking suck, Chad Johnson is an overated ***, and "who-dey" is not even a realy f cking word. Stop f cking shouting it like it means anything. What is "dey"? What is its language of origin?

Exactly, it is not a word, so stop using it! All that shouting "who-dey" manages to do is reinforce the idea that everyone in cincinnati is a f cking moron who does not know how to speak their native language.

I know, back in 1988 it was "Who Dey, think is gonna beat Dem Bengals." but it has been almost 20 years since you have even come close to making it to the Super Bowl, and most people think they are going to beat the bengals. You might as well be th f cking redskins...

And "Who Dey, think is gonna beat Dem Bengals."? How f cking stupid do you have to be to think that this little diddy even comes close to resembling a proper phrase. I am stammering with rage just thinking about "Who Dey, think is gonna beat Dem Bengals."

And stop ending your f cking sentances with "at." You do not put a preposition at the end of your sentance. It is a basic grammar rule that you should have learned in the first grade. STOP IT! Die. everyone in cincinnati can f cking die. I hate you all.

actually.. christ probably wasnt born in december..
why they celebrate the whole thing now i dont know..
but it definately is not just about god/jesus.
many other religions/countries had their mid winter celebrations around this time.
that probably is also the reason christs birth moved to december around the time the christians were converting all those people to christianity

Actually, Christmas has become more than just a religious holiday, and I do not mean in the corporate way. Christmas is a time of year where being nice to others and spreading goodwill becomes the norm and where people tend to be a bit nicer and willing to give. And if you ask them why, they'll say "It's the Christmas season." And that's not just limited to people who are Christian, many non-Christian celebrate Christmas now.

So, I hate to disagree, but Christmas in not just about God, nor is it about commercialism. It's also about being a time of goodwill and being just a bit nicer to the people around you.

Long story short..

Christmas was moved to December to coincide with some Pagan holiday, so that either:
a)The pagans would be converted w/o having to change their celebration schedule.
b)Christians could get away with their old habits.

A christmas tree is a stolen pagan ritual.. Something about flaming eyeballs of animals being thrown on a tree.

If it was up to me, I'd cancel the gifts.

I find it silly that people give spend money to buy each other stuff when everyone could just save the money and buy it themselves. And before you write me off as a coldhearted sumbitch, what I like about Christmas is the time I get to spend with those I love.

For me the spirit of Christmas is not in the presents or the morning mass at church. It's about sharing a good meal and a good evening with the ones I care about.

By the way, Christmas Eve is the main event in Denmark. December 25th is celebrated as First Christmas Day, but gifts are unwrapped on the 24th in the evening. Which is why I said "sharing a good meal and a good evening".

But why should you only be nice to others during one season?

Are you saying I only have to be a decent human during some arbitrary time, and the rest of the year I am allowed to be horrible to people because it is not christmas?

I agree that people should be civil towards each other, but I feel that saying Christmas isn't about god/religion is like saying Ash Wednesday/Palm Sunday/Easter isn't just about religion. People may have added other attributes to the day, but it is about god/religion.

I dunno, maybe I am just old fashioned.

I would guess that most do it simply because they are so inundated with christmas stuff that it is easier to join in than try to escape it.

As was mentioned, Christmas (which literally stands for Christ's Mass") started when Christian leaders decided to force Christianity on the unwashed heathens who celebrated other Pagan rituals during the same time of year. It is largely agreed that Christ was not actually born on Christmas day.

So Jesus put the Christ in Christmas, but the holiday now spans more than just the Christian faith. Depending on your religious (and social) upbringing, Christmas is either a religious day to celebrate the birth of the Messaiah, a day for rekindling social ties, a day for family & loved ones to gather, a holiday based on a fat mystical man in a red suit who sneaks down chimneys and gives out toys or coal and has a penchant for reindeer, or just another day on the calendar.

Whatever it means to you, enjoy it to the fullest. Smiley: boozing

As a Philadelphia-raised football fan, it is total HELL living in the Dallas area. But regardless, the Eagles shall kick some Cow-punk *** on Monday before that unimportant game being played by the Fish and the Jets. (Oh... and Go Jets.)

Absolutely. If you aren't nice during the Christmas season, a visit from the Spanish Inquisition is the only answer. If you aren't nice during the rest of the year, they stay in their torture chambers sitting on their rocking chairs while telling each other C**ck N**ris jokes.

I live near Winston-Salem and the Panthers are my second favorite team. I had already been cheering for Miami and worshipping Marino before Carolina came along, so there was no way Carolina was going take over as my favorite team. Sounds like we're in the same boat and yeah, that Steelers game was ugly.
