If you actually go to the trouble of thinking about it, somtimes is hard i know, the funny/insensitive thing about this is not killing an ammount of characters in a game.
The point in my view is the disturbance of a momento which was donne to honour/remeber a real life.
Since you might not have read my second paragraph I will again point it out, going a bit bolder and more appropriate.
Would you hold a memorial to a dearly loved one in the middle of an area known for the high rate of violent crimes? And would it somehow become a more appealing idea because at one point, this was the location they were born?
I understand she liked to fish there. I also understand this was a PvP server and the area was in contested territory. This, to me, is near begging for someone to ruin the event. You CANNOT expect everyone to be kind and remorseful of your loss in the real life (it certainly doesn't stop courts from convicting or criminals from robbing you you), so why would you assume it in a game? Is it now a secret known only to a select few that a significant percentage of people online only give a damn about their own gratification and this percentage triples when games are involved (READ: Illegal downloads, private and illegal game servers, buying gold/characters)? Did anyone, anywhere, expect the same people who'll gank you when AFK or in the middle of a battle with something far too tough will stop and let you have a private moment if you ask nice?

The example i brough up and i knew some people might disagree was trying to get some younger people to actually think about what they do. Just because this is a game people should still have some morals and not just think that there wont be anyone that they will actually have to face irl and demand explanation from thei activities.
Err... Yeah. Young people will totally get what you're saying. Normally they think people who try and treat online life like the real world are wrongheaded, but that'll change when you compare world PvP to terrorism...
Unfortunately, us older people won't get it. Instead we'll be mildly offended you'd suggest an incident involving one person's real-life death and the MMO players' responses should in any way be equated to a terrorist act on the site of a previous terrorist act, both in the middle of heavily populated New York City. It just ain't cool, y'know?
-Edit-
And one more thing to think about, using more realistic analogies than any presented by either side thus far.
If a friend died of a drug overdose, would you shoot up at his grave? If he died playing Russian Roulette, would you shoot off a couple rounds to honor him? If he died while driving under the influence, would you cruise the spot with a six-pack?
Say your child died as a result of spending too much time playing a video game. How would you feel if the people she was interacting with so much in this video game decided to hold a memorial for her... In the video game. Possibly even the last location they saw on the monitor before calling 911. Now who is the insensitive party?
I'm not saying video games caused her death; her own negligence did that. Yet how do YOU think a grieving parent will feel about the situation?
