I would just start in PvP if that is where you want to end up

the beginning 2 areas you cannot get attacked by players, that should give you enough time to get a feel before you dive into the PvP realm

Just an FYI to you on this...if you know that you will want to play on a PVP server, there is no reason for you to start PVE to 'get a handle on it'. You will be safe for quite a few levels on a PVP server. By the time you are venturing out in the areas where there is PVP you will be comfortable with the game and your character, and probably ready for the fight.

I know this because I made the same mistake. I wanted to play PVP but figured I would go PVE first. Well, I would have been fine on PVP...but now I have my favorite character on a PVE server and I like playing him too much to abandon him. I am now playing a new toon on PVP and my main on PVE...but I wish I had my first char on PVP.
