Blizzard's Downloading SystemFollow

#1 Dec 21 2004 at 12:27 PM Rating: Good
Is it just me, or is the 'torrent' system they have set up utter crap? Both at home and at work I'm uploading at least 10 times faster than I'm downloading. The last patch, I did the download a day after it came out and it was the same deal. I sat for 2+ hours waiting for the thing to complete.

Now I understand that many people are trying to download it at once and this torrent type system is (in theory) a decent way to get the patch out. But it just doesn't seem to be working well.

Right now, I'm at 31% and 1.5k a second. My upload speed is around 45k a second. It's not my firewall and it's not my computer. I have friends with the same problems.

Any word on if there's a way to get the patch via another method?

I've been downloading the new patch for 26 minutes now and I'm at 14.4 megs (out of 40.1). I have my college's T3 connection almost entirely to myself at the moment. Like you said, it's not a firewall problem, it's not a computer problem.

I want to play WoW. Smiley: banghead

Compared to the hours upon hours I waited for my EQ patches (same connection speed now as then) I'm actually pretty happy with it! That, and the server's down right now, so I'm not all that concerned about how long it takes.

Well I dislike the downloader... But at least it lets you see the transfer rates.

ANyways, probably just congestion atm, but keep in mind that with this system (least if its what I think it is) the more people downloading the faster it is. So maybe not a lot of people are downloading because the maintanence isn't supposed to end till 10am.

I wish they let you use the option of the torrent or their downloader. I'd rather use Azureus to download with.

That's true...but it seems to be a permanent thing. Last time the game was patched, I wasn't able to play until the day after. About 30 hours after the patch was released. I still had crap download speeds.

Their downloading system chokes on my network. Also I don't like the fact that they use a torrent system. I loath the fact that my download stops the second I get over the upload. I really hate the fact that their answer to problems is "Shut down your fire wall and lay open these named and announced ports." All in all there is nothing good about this system and it has no place in a pay service game.

Clarification: I started downloading the patch about 30 hours after it was released. I had crappy download speeds and it took me just over 2 hours to get it patched.

Hmm... Last patch I think it took me about 30min or so. I'll have to try to download this patch and see if its slow for me or not.

Also, you or anyone else, know whats going on with these threads within a thread appearing sometimes when you edit a post?

First, which firewall did you "disable" was it just the windows firewall. If so do you use a router? Most routers have a hardware firewall. If this is the case you need to allow port forwarding.

Before you start bashing Blizzard please make sure its not something your doing wrong. I troubleshoot computers everyday of the week. In most cases its not a computer error that is causing the problem. Its user error.

Que the rate down..

I'm not sure about that. I replied to that specific post so I could get a quote, so I thought that might have done it. But it seems you did the same....

lol good point, check your router's settings. I have XP professional and SP2 so I was able to set an exception for WoW, although I did have to do some port forwarding on my router. Before I did that, it WAS slow as heck...

Actually I did quote=... I seem to get that thing sometimes though when I edit my posts, normally just the replying to the main topic. I've seen it several other times tonight/this morning also and am thinking about messaging an admin about it or something since it doesn't seem exactly right and isn't always appearing.

I'm a Network Technician. I've got it set up right :) I've had it set up with and without a router at home. With the router, I had my IP set up as the DMZ Host and I was running Zone Alarm on the computer. ZA had the downloader set up for full access. Without the router, it's just ZA protecting the PC. Same deal

At work, I don't have a firewall on my laptop, but I have set up the port forwarding on the company firewall. Same download speeds.

As for opening certain ports on your router... I had to do this, and now get fairly acceptable speeds (60k/s avg). While it's no problem for many of us, a lot of people would either be unable or scared to death to mess with such things.

On another note, I installed Cosmos a few days ago and had just enough time to become addicted before the patch busted it. I think the "Delete your interface directory or quit the game" message is a bit heavy handed. I'm sure I'll have to replace all my icons now and such.

Now, who wants to volunteer to make a little UI box that allows us to navigate this site from inside the game with a sexy little compact interface?

Sorry this got a little off track, but it follows a coherent progression: Downloader issues -> Patch breaks Cosmos -> Fantasy UI plugin. See? It all makes sense. Please don't rate me down!

This is bittorrent, it is slow if you don't open the ports because you can only connect to the original seeder. Before opening the specified port, I forget what it was (check in the download status window), I was getting like 4K and after opening that single port I got over 100K and finshed the download in ~10 minutes.

Bittorrent is awesome, and you shouldn't knock it before you know how to use it. I usually get 300K+ on well seeded torrents, but since the patch window is obviously closed when users complete it, it won't be as fast as it can.

Actually I think he was thinking he was going to get rated down... You got to admit his post had a little bit of righteous (sp?) air about it...

Not knocking bittorrent. Not even using it improperly.
Wait...where are you getting your information about what I'm doing? Because it's all wrong. Tell your informant you want your money back. Is it Bill? Is he a spy?

That's funny, took me about 5 minutes to download the patch. Bittorrent rocks if you know what you are doing.

Why is this the only thing people can say? Bittorrent works even if you don't know what you're doing. My 10 year old sister got it to work. However, I do happen to know what I'm doing, and it seems that the system doesn't want to work for me.

Took me 1 hour, 42 minuets and 40 seconds. It hung up on 99% and didn't finish till I told it to not do P2P, it was merrily sitting on 99% with an upload rate of 60kps for 30 minuets of that 1 hour 42. I hear if you use an additional program that choaks the upload you can get something resembling decent performace out of the blizzard Downloader (which for the record is not bit torrent but a Blizzard cluged ******* child of bit torrent). Also to note my ISP doesn't like torrents in any form and tends to choke me. Which is why in my little rant I said "is incompatable with my network." I am lucky I am not on a campus or the like. There are people relying on mirros to get this patch.

They need to pony up and stop using there own customer's for bandwidth to push there crap. A lot of places block torrents on the firewall also. I cant update from work on my laptop now ;p i got to wait to get home to update and play :(
