My dad just started playing WoW and he is comming from a his lvl 75 MNK in FFXI. What he liked about FFXI was the fishing (why? I don't know lol) but he is also liking the fishing in this game since it's almost the same type of system.

But what can you do with fishing in this game? Those of you familiar with FFXI prolly know that the pinnacle of a fisherman's carreer was to obtain 10,000 moat carps to get the Lu Shang's Fishing Rod. But is there anything liek that in this game, where you can obtain a special rod to fish up very rare and Named Sea Monsters with awesome loot? Or anything of the like?

Thnx in advance.

Also when you combine fishing with cooking (both secondary professions) you can end up getting some very valuable food (both in monetary amount and in health regeneration). Also it is a great way to pass the time ^_^

Nothing like stepping out on that bridge, feeling the breeze with a whiff from that salty ocean. Fishes jumping up and down.
Tossing out your line, getting a fish on the hook only to get GANKED BY AN UGLY ORC WHO STEALS MY PRETTY FISH!

Nope no use fishing, never more ;_;

At least the fishing in WoW is interactive. I got my fishing in FFXI to level 42, with aspirations of greatness and a Lu Shangs in mind. Well, I dont really play that game anymore, but for me it was just a nice relaxing way to make easy money.

I also Fish in WoW, but for somewhat differant reasons. Locked chests can be found while fishing. I like this for 2 reasons. 1) I pick them to raise my lockpicking skill and 2) I have found a few rare items doing it which have net me some nice coin.

Its definalty not for everybody. But I like it.

Can any class lockpick ? Or only Rogues? And how is it done?

Only rogues, and we can open the boxes if you trade and put it in the "do not trade" section so people can't rip you off. I sure wouldn't trust a rogue by giving him the box so he could unlock it and then give it back to me, not like rogue is the nicest class in the game :P

Its unfortunalty a Rogue only ability that you can buy around level 15. Once you get the skill, you can buy a set of "Theives Tools" from the "Shady Dealers" that hang out around Rogue trainers.

The best part it, you only need one set of tools for life. Just keep them in your inventory, and it works like any other trade skill from then on.

Would it therefore be correct to assert that fishing as a non-rogue puts you at a significant disadvantage?

Mage has the spell to unlock things.

Engineers can use explosives to open locks.

How effective are they? I dont know since I'm a Rogue :)

Kingjord: No I think you'd be at an equal footing with the other classes, just make a friend open the **** for you :P
Just what I think, don't blame me if my advice is wrong

Join a guild.. it makes the game more fun AND, since Rogue is a popular class, any guild is bound to have at least one Rogue. Tell him to picklock it for you :)..
Or, you can sell the locked boxes to Rogues.

Back too the orginal Question. Yes I have done quests for Fishing instructors like catch 6 specific fish and they give you enchanced fishing rods. Also I spend alot of time finishing when I die and resurrect myself from the spirit healer its a good way to burn the 10 minutes you have too wait till your stats are 100% again.

Thankfully friendly Rogues will gladly pick the locks for you. Even if the chest is soulbound to you I could pick it for you.

I don't know why, but I don't like fishing in this game that much. It could be that i'm not using lures or something, but I find the time I have to click the bober is like less then 1/2 a second or I loose the thing, and with it any chance of gaining skill.

Simple.

Bid. Run to forlorn cavern, fish. Get outbid, run back. Rinse and repeat.

Really ive never fished anything good. I got some boots once that were NPC bait for 6s but thats about all.

On the lock boxes, rogue's can pick the locks starting at level 16, blacksmiths can make siver keys then gold keys to open the locks, engineers can make seafourum to open locks. So while rogues can do it anyone can if they wish to persue the correct trade skill. Also blacksmiths and engineers don't need to level up their skills to open boxes. So if you are in a rush, sure higher the tradesman, but you are doing low level rogues a favor by letting them open the box, also remember regarding paying for the service, rogues open locks at no costs (After the 15s lockpicking tools, which they need to do rogue quests.)
