It seems too me that any time a tailor askes "What harvesting profession should I take?" the first response is "Mining." Then all the engineers and blacksmith talk of how they buy stacks of bars at the AH and how profitable mining is. This confuses me to no end. Ever Blacksmith and engineer I play has mining, I am never without at least one stack of copper and bronze and I usually have a few silver bars (I'm about level 20), as a blacksmith and engineer I have zero problems with getting metals, the stuff is everywhere if you know where to look. Meanwhile as a tailor, blacksmith and engineer the one prodcut I have tons of problems getting is leather. It always seems there is that one item you really want to make that requires 2-5 leather. So why are all the blacksmiths and engineers buying metals and telling tailors out there to become miners? Skinning is a much more valuble harvesting craft for a tailor, both in providing materials you will need and giving you a rescource you can sell on the markets.

I'll agree to that. If you're not interested in Enchanting (and I can see why most people wouldn't be - it's a tremendous money sink at low levels), then Skinning would be the next logical choice, since quite a few Tailoring items (Boots, Silk Packs, etc.) call for leather.

Its not a matter of not being interested in enchanting, its the matter of not being interested in the cost of enchanting

The problem with skinning is that the whole 'collect skins' thing is very random. Monsters rarely drop Heavy leather, which is mostly needed to make gloves and boots. Leatherworkers can -make- Heavy leather out of medium leather, which lets them then sell it in stacks for a nice amount when people want to make silk packs.

Some people don't pick mining, they pick to creating things, and buy one type of creation material. Also I think every profession buys True Silver, and who gets Silver? Miners, who makes True Silver when its not found? Alchy's. So Tailor/Miners have their purpose.

Plus its a good way to get money to buy Heavy Leather, which is MUCH cheaper then rare metals because Leather can be made, metal can not.

I don't know why a tailor would want mining, except as money to sell from the auction house. I personally think anyone who buys more than the occasional stack from the AH is a fool, though, so I don't try to sell it normally.

I've said in the past that the best second profession for tailors is either enchanting (another stand-alone skill) or skinning (which helps support it a little.)

Silver is the rare form of tin. Truesilver is the rare form of Mithril. Neither is used for anything that I know of outside of smithing and engineering.
Alchemists don't make Truesilver. In all my time in beta, I not once did a transmute for anyone despite advertising for it...not even Arcanite.

Leatherworkers can make light medium and heavy leather out of the lower version.

As for heavy leather dropping I get it rather regularly now.

ive found that higher level mobs drop higher level leathers. if i kill a level 3 mountain cougar near camp narache, chances are good that if i skin it, i get scraps. if i kill a level 24 twilight stalker at stonetalon peak, chances are good that i get medium leather, with a possibility of medium hide or 2 light leathers. lowest mob ive gotten heavy leather off of was a 25. i assume as the level of my prey goes up, so too will the level of the leather i get from their carcasses.
