More RAM??Follow

#1 Dec 06 2004 at 10:55 PM Rating: Decent
Hi, currently in WoW, i am finding it slightly annoying the load times when entering a new zone, etc.. where the game halts and jersk abit for 10-15seconds. I currently have 512mb of PC2700 (DDR333) RAM.
With an AMD 2800 and geforce FX 5900XT

Just want to know, should i go and buy 512mb more DDR333 RAM?? will that help? or should i go and get 512mb DDR400 RAM to replace the current 512mb i have in at the moment?
Getting 1gb of DDR400 atm isnt really that viable as im not willing to spend that much for this. Thanx for any help.

You will notice a big difference when you upgrade to two 512s. The 3200 RAM will run slower if you pair it up with your 2700. So unless you plan on replacing the 2700 down the road with another 3200, get the cheaper 2700.

With your posted system specs, you should have no problems at all... are you running other nonessential processes in the background (like, say, your web browser for Allakhazam)? Kill anything that you don't need - keep your firewall going, and anything else you view as indispensible, but shut down all other bells and whistles on your system.

ok, thanks for the replies guys. im not running anything else in the background. Other than ICQ, which doesnt use much.
my settings are set on full pretty much though. Other than object distance which i toned down, so that it loads objects closer to me, rather than further away. I dont have AA on at all, but i do have 4xAS turned on. Ive turned that off, and it makes no noticeable difference.

And so i can mix 2700 with 3200?? didnt know that. Currently i have 2x 256mb chips. Its actually cheaper for me to get 3200, haha, where iam (Australia), PC3200 is around 10% cheaper than PC2700, haha, and thats if you can even find 2700, not many places stock it anymore.
I may get an additional 3200 down the road, but maybe by that time 3200 will be the old outdated memory?? :)

I used to think that ICQ didn't use much, too... but the truth is that it does. Definitely shut down ICQ, if you can stand being without that bit of instant contact with others.

I'd also turn down some of your details... you don't need everything to be the prettiest. It all still looks good with moderate settings.

heh, thats the thing, i want it to run good, but on nearly full settings, haha.
If i can mix 3200 with 2700, i think ill just go out and buy some :)

The thing about mixing speeds for pretty much anything in the PC is that both things will run at the SLOWER speed (there is an exception for this on HDDs though if you buy "special" ones). So while you can have a 3200 and a 2700 running in your system, the 3200 will act like a 2700. Still, get it if you want but make sure you know which is the faster all the time (label it or something) so you can replace the right (slower) one when/if you buy more.

yep, its all good, they have labels on em from the manufacturor.
And i just went and bought some 512mb ddr400, which combined with my original ddr333 totally eliminates all the lag and jerkyness :) before when i alt-tabbed, it would take around 30seconds to load get everything going again in windows, ie.. without extreme slowness.... now it does it in a split second with no slowness.
thanks guys
