I want to buy WORLD OF WARCRAFT. However, I don't time!!Follow

I'd like some honest opinions here.

I'm a senior in High School with a part-time job who works out regularly. I've been hearing some great things about World of Warcraft and it not being a time sink along the lines of Final Fantasy XI.

I played that game until I was a level 70 red mage. In the end, I had to wait upwards of EIGHT hours for a group at times due to fact that soloing was next to impossible. In order to gain a level I'd have to stay in groups for hours on end (about twelve hours of constant xping to level at that point). The sick part? I was the second most sought after job for parties.

Money was another issue. I had to spend absurd amounts of time to get enough gil for decent equipment. It was really quite broken, in hindsight.

My question is this. Will I have to sacrifice my life again for WoW? I am very interested in joining the community, but this time I would like to solo the entire way. I don't want to give up the gym again, nor work. I want to be able to have fun without killing my life.

Please, no flames. I just want some honest answers.

Well, I'd like to expand upon the gym thing.

I stopped going for six months due to FFXI. I was hopelessly addicted and due to the way the game was set up I really had no time at all to do much but wait for parties and stay with them for hours on end, lest everyone hate me in them.

I don't have to worry about this with WOW right? I can just stop when I want, right?

Is there a faster way of getting around than in FFXI? The chocobo was still very slow in some cases. Teleporting didn't help much either, the list of areas to teleport to was small.

Thanks.

Okay, one last thing (probably I'll have more questions later!)

I have several friends who are dumb as whale **** and are currently playing Everquest 2. If I join a server in WOW and then a few weeks later they decide to get into WOW, can they all come to my server?

Well, I got to level 26 today without ever grouping for experience I've only grouped for instances (Things like Dynamis or Promyvion for FFXI) And The great thing, I can play for an hour or two, and quit and move on to somthing else and still feel I've gotten somthing accomplished.

I think WoW will suit your needs perfectly. Though It is really fun so It'll take dedication not to give up the gym again ;)

As for transportation They are Wing riders/Bat/alliance air thingys hehe, I am hoarde. There are mounts at lvl 40, abilities to make you move faster, Boats/Zepplins, your Hearthstone (Warp spell for everyone once an hour) I dont spend near the tiem I did travelling in FFXI.

About your server, YES when you make a character you pick what server you want to play on, It's not assigned to you. And you can make some huge abount like,... 8 characters per server up to 10 servers or somthing like that... It's insane how many characters you can make.

Great question, heres a longer reply:

Your questions:
1) Spending hours (mainly waiting) to get anything done
2) Never having the cash to buy the kit you need/want
3) Having to form a huge group to get anything done
4) Taking a long slow time to get from A to B

1) You can log in and do a quest in as little as 30 minutes - I've done it. Bigger quests take longer. High level dungeons may take hours but thats like an epic expedition. Lets look at something midrange where you might decide you need a group:
Hogger - lvl11 elite boss - you are about level 10 - you get the quest, go see how many lvl10 mobs there are around, or get killed by Hogger (I did) so you decide you need a group:
a) you see someone else hanging around and invite them
- they often accept, or a small group will invite you, and
in about a minute you're off to see hogger
=or=
b) you say in General or OOC channel "anyone wanna do Hogger?"
- usually a couple ppl reply in seconds: "me", "can i join?"
and you invite them (no range limit) and wait a couple mins
whilst they walk to where you are, and off you all go.
...this is the form that works in most cases, people are friendly
and forming a group for a common cause isn't a big deal. Groups
are limited to about 5 so its not like organising a huge thing.
...sometimes people won't want to group, but then again if you
have a couple of friends you play with you'll be fine. And if, unlike me, you don't always insist on taking on something higher level than you should, then you can solo it up to a high level.

2) Cash. You get generous rewards from quests, and if you take the time to loot and skin things you kill, and sell all the junk to NPCs (yay!) then you get money in pretty quickly. There are always things to spend it on, but with just a little saving up or otherwise not wasting money then you can quickly buy decent gear from players hawking their loot or the auction house. Buying from NPCs is very expensive and only for the rich and lazy. I've never really struggled for money, but some things are a luxury that I do without. I'm lvl16 now and about to amass my first gold piece. When I do need something I can buy it, but its balanced great so I don't get complacent. I make my own healing potions and feel good about skinning animals and making a few silver once my inventory is full.

3) Most of the game can be soloed, especially if you pick something like Paladin which is good for that. Or hunter. Or warlock. Maybe others. I play a druid so I'm less of a tank and I can get mobbed and then captured or killed. Most quests up to mid level you can carefully plan and single pull mobs and if you save potions and scrolls, and do tough quests when you've just been buffed by passing friendly people (happens a lot and as a druid I do it too) then you can take things solo. In a group of just two, you can watch each others back and do everything up to fairly high levels.
You can't solo the entire game. The game is designed with things like huge dragons, and raids, geared towards large groups at the top level. This is so that lvl60 characters don't get bored or run out of challenge. I don't think this will present a problem to you at all.

4) Its a big world. I prided myself that I did the Elf trip from Elf Island to Human lands in 55 minutes in beta, but that was getting killed every 5 minutes as a lvl1 char. Once you explore and learn gryphon routes you should get most places in 5 minutes, maybe 10. There are other tricks later in game, teleporting etc. It still feels like a big world, but once you experience a flight on a gryphon you won't mind the time it takes. Theres some walking to be done on quests, but only a few minutes.

Hope everyone agrees, I think you'll love the game!

Just wanted to expand on your terrific answer to this one. This isn't a cash driven system ... yet. Hopefully never will be. Most of the quests provide you with a decent upgrade of some sort or in the course of doing the quest you can find some nice armor/weapons. The only thing I have purchased in 21 levels was skills, arrows and vials for my alchemy skilling.

Thanks Filax, Tsakiera,
-The cash rewards from quests are very welcome, since you can buy things like healing potions and some of the flying trips cost a bit, but even from an early part of the game you can take trips just for fun. You can play the game (and progress) with no money at all. Training in things like spells as you level do cost more and more though, so don't miss out on money from looting.
-I forgot about your friends. Yes they can join whatever server you're on. I'm on Argent Dawn, which *was* the only EastCoast RP server and VERY busy. But even at peak I was still able to create new characters on it, so your friends will be able to join you.
Take Care,
Cherreia.

You dont have to do 'farming' like you did in FF XI, basically you pick up everything on the way.

1. It isnt boring
2. I'm a high school student, grade 12 myself

BUt.. I really suggest you NOT to play WoW. It's just too addicting!

Okay, so in other words I can still do the gym and work with WOW, as I can solo mostly everything?

Sounds like FFXI is like EQ in the time sink having to group issue. I played EQ until I was in all elemental planes. Took hours every night several days a week to get anywhere. Could not solo. Did not have a RL if I wanted to advance. Wow is a breath of fresh air. I can solo or partner with my Son whenever I want. Play for 30 min or several hours. Quit whenever I feel like it.

We played an elite dungeon this weekend. Was great. Died about 6 times but so fun. Easy to get in and out. Well easy compared to EQ. Killed one Boss for a quest and explored a lot of the dungeon.

Denial is not just a river in Egypt anymore... =)

It is true, you can play for any amount of time you'd like; unless you're in an instanced dungeon (simply due to respect factors) you can logout anytime, anywhere. This makes it very easy to sneak an extra couple of minutes into the game whenever you want. Be warned however, it is quite addicting. I'm almost shaking in withdrawl...

Frickin' work! =)
