Remote Desktop HelpFollow

#1 Dec 03 2004 at 9:58 AM Rating: Decent
Let me preface this by saying that I am completely addicted to this game beyond help. Hence me wanting to remote my comp from work just to log-on.

My situation:

My computer at work has xp with Remote Assistance. My computer at home is running xp home edition. Now I want to connect to my computer at home, but under the system > remote desktop tab, it does not give me an option to set up user accounts or passwords. I just have the top portion with has "Allow this computer to be accessed remotely" (something to that effect). Now the user I log on to my home comp with normally has admin control. I tried starting up in safemode with networking, logging on officially as admin this time; and still under the system > remote desktop tab i do not get the option to setup user accounts or passwords. At my computer at work I am able to do this (but my work comp cannot handle the workload of WoW). Now i have two questions, is this a feature left out of xp home edition? If not, how do I gain access to setup an account so i can remote my home comp from work?

Thank you for taking the time to answer my question, or even just to read the post.

Cheers!

First off, I think we should start a WoW addiction group. I'll be the first to join. You need to be the second. Why? Because you thought about the remote desktop to game. And why do I need to join? Because I'm going to do the same thing from work.

To your problem: I've never used XP Home. I feel dirty just thinking about it. However, what I think you can do is this:
Right Click on My Computer
Select Manage
Go to 'Local Users and Groups'
Create a new User under the Users Folder
Add that User to the group of Administrators

Then you can try logging into your home PC from work with that user.

If you don't have that option of 'Local Users and Groups' in XP Home, then I'm not sure what you can do. There are user accounts from Control Panel, but as I said, I've never used that.

Let me know how it goes!

I believe this was left out of XP Home Edition. XP Pro has it though. Thanks for reminding me, now that my boss is out of town untill next Wednesday i can set this up and atleast get some fishing time in while I am at work.

grrr...Cloaked beat me to that, enlist me as number 3 in the group then. I am going home during lunch to set this up today now.

We're all gonna' get fired!

I've already started cleaning out my desk. j/k

I'll let you know once I home. If I can't get in with XP home, I'll have to pay a visit to my old friend suprnova.org and get Pro.

Cheers.

RDC to play WoW? I hope you're only going to be fishing, 'cause the redraw'll kill ya.

It's actually not that bad. I used to use it to play Warcraft III. Of course, I'm running off a t1...

Unless RDC has some phenominal compression technology, it wont work for me. I was using Dameware from home to RC a PC at work and without a game running the redraw was terrible. I have ~3Mbps cable, the PC at work is on a T1. Of course it could be Dameware that has a problem, but, who knows.

I hate to tell you this, but you can't use remote desktop to play WoW. It emulates your graphics and classifies it as such. When you try to start the game it will say no 3D graphics detected.

Even if you somehow got it to start, the delay will be so bad that you get 1 frame every 2 seconds. Unplayable.

I have WoW on my one (And only) dedicated windows box, which I use just for remote desktop. I use a different proffesional program for it, as the base windows one sucks ***. If you have a fast connection, etc, you can do it quite well. I can even play CS:S, albeit at around 20FPS
