Horrendous Graphis ProblemFollow

#1 Dec 02 2004 at 9:27 PM Rating: Decent
Ok just some background info about my PC:

AMD Athlon XP 1700+
512mb DDR Ram
64mb Shared VRAM (I'm guessing this is the problem, HOWEVER, I had no issues running FFXI on the highest possible settings.)
40gig HD
Complete list of updated drivers blah blah.

But I notice even on the lowest possible settings, WoW is performing absolutely horrendous. Even on high settings the graphics are well below par. I found this quite odd considering FFXI is more graphic intensive and yet textures and landscapes didnt look like they were thrown in a blender. I've seen the screenshots of what WoW can look like and it is beautiful. Please help me figure out what the problem is, WoW just looks absolutely disgusting on my computer. Graphics comparable to EQ1 >_<. Please don't be a smart *** and say buy a new computer. Minimum recommended specs where 32mb VRAM and 256ram, so if the graphics dont perform reasonable on that sort of system, I believe these minimum specifications are extremely misleading.

Sorry i forgot to mention, Character models and other littles things like that look perfectly fine, the huge issue im wrestling with is the environmental textures and terrain encountered in outdoor areas...Absolutely horrendous...

Try to minimize the amount of things running in the background. Taskbar items, etc. can all use system resources. It helps to run Adaware too. That crazy spyware junk can sneak up on ya.

Open the Task Manager and have a peek at what processes are running. If there are a few you don't recognize, google em and figure out what they are.

Make sure your system is clean and all fans running. Dust and heat can be brutal.

Just some suggestions.

It would be a good suggestion if the game was running slow, but the problem is the outdoor terrain looking like crap. Portions of it are blurred and just utterly disgusting. I know this isnt a gameplay graphics issue unless the minimum specs were grossly understated.

Is "Shard" a company, or was it a typo of "Shared"?

It sounds to me as though it is a driver or OpenGL/DX conflict. You might try an uninstall & reinstall of your current drivers, as well as reinstalling DX9.c (or whatever DirectX the current version is).

Hmmm...I did redownload the drivers and directx9.0c, but i didnt uninstall directx first...I'll give that a try.

If that fails, I would put the blame squarely on the graphics card.

*punches graphics card*

I don't think it would take a major system overhaul for you to play this, as my system is very similiar, with the exception of a better graphics card.

Athlon XP 2000+
Radeon 9500 Pro
512 DDR300 RAM
Too much hard-drive space for my own good. ;)

Problem is I'm running on a laptop with no upgradeability! >_<
this is a sad day indeed, the thing is i dont understand why i could run FFXI at highest possible settings and have it still perform smooth (except for trips to cities).

Ok I have found a solution to those running on laptops or for those who want to run on laptops. This solution is for anyone running Mobile ATI video chipsets.

http://www.driverheaven.net/patje/ This is the tool needed to mod your inf files so that you can install the new catalyst drivers from ATI. Please be 100% aware that Blizzard nor Allakhazam supports this method and it is to be used at your own discretion and risk.
