Oppinions Needed from those who played both.Follow

#1 Dec 02 2004 at 8:23 AM Rating: Decent
Before I ask anything, I want to say this first. This is not meant to start a flame war or anything, so PLS dont flame anyone or anything on this thread. I just want oppinions.

NO offence here.

I have notice that all those who said WoW is a very good and fun game, have not played EQ2.
And all those who played both would mostly say EQ2 is the better game.

So what I want to ask is any of you here who played both and prefer WoW? If you are kind enough, you can post some reasons as to why you prefer WoW as well. But if you dont want to be bothered, then just post saying that you played both and prefer WoW.

You see, im still confuse on which to play, so i wish these oppinions can at least help me make a choice.

I'm currently playing both.

It sounds like another one of these threads where you're trying to get people to beg you to play the game so you can justify your decision. This type of post has already been disected and looked down upon.

Make your own decision. There is no such thing as a 'better game'. They are both great.

EQ2 probably required more of a timesink since it takes a bit longer to level. But EQ2 isn't innovative at all, its pretty much the same ol' type of MMO, except with good particle effects. Personally I don't like some of the character models in EQ2, but its all about personal preference. EQ2 also has more variety in classes and races, and you can customize the look of your character a bit more. And of course, EQ2 lacks PvP.

WoW seems to be more innovative since it targers a wider audience. It might not take as long to get to max level in WoW, but as of now there is a lot more end game content here. The graphics are cartoony, but stay true to the Warcraft franchise name. Of course, the PvP here is top notch.

All in all, WoW is a smoother, more polished game that will be easy to run on almost any system. EQ2's graphic technology is optimized for future computer technology down the road, which is a good sign of how long the game is going to last.

Both games are great, there's not really a 'better' choice here.

This is a WoW forum. You will probably only get people who say WoW ie better. I'm one of them.

They're very different games. I picked up EQ2 because I decided to quit playing the WoW open beta to avoid burning myself out on the low-level stuff. I honestly didn't expect to enjoy it that much (I absolutely hated EQ1), just satisfy my MMORPG habit for a little while.

That being said, I like EQ2 much better than I expected to. I really like the archetype->class->subclass progression, it feels very natural and cool. The betrayal quests are a neat idea too. That's something I definitely wish WoW had, given the series' history of turncoats on both sides.

WoW is much more casual-play friendly than EQ2 is, in my opinion. And I love the game world. I like the graphics much better than EQ2's, which don't seem to have much character to me (but then I don't really care about graphics -- Angband is still the best game of all time -- and this is purely a personal aesthetic decision anyway).

Honestly I think they're both good games, just very different. I haven't played any EQ2 since WoW came out, but I expect in a week or so, I'll be dividing my time between them (when I'm not playing Pirates!, anyway -- Sid Meier's done it again).

I haven't played either game yet, but ordered WoW last night. It looks like launch issues are finally starting to settle down.

I've been reading the forums and from what I've found, it seems that WoW will better suit my play style and time constraints. I spent a lot of time (too much) playing EQ1. I really enjoyed it for the longest time. I ended up just canceling my account one day because I found myself logging in and doing nothing. I was so bored with sitting in BoT cranking AA points hour after hour on 2 different characters. Finding a group was getting to be tough too. Lots were leaving EQ to play other games, making it near impossible to find groups at times.

From what I've gathered, EQ2 may end up the same type of "grind" that EQ1 was. I just can't take that anymore. Sure, the screen shots look great and the changes/improvements look challenging, but I'm tired of countless hours at one camp pulling mobs.

One thing that grabs my interest about WoW. Soloing. I like the idea of logging in and having the option to easily solo if that's what I'm in the mood for. It's my understanding that this is possible in EQ2, just more difficult.

I prefer EQ2's graphics from what I've seen, but the system requirements seem pretty steep. Perhaps a bit ahead of their time. I travel often, so use a laptop, and would rather play a game that will run well on it.

Just a few of my observations.......

I have played both WoW and EQ2, I played both games up to late stages of beta so was pretty much the final retail clients, I still think EQ1 is a great game so I will give a fair decision of which I think is best.

WoW is the far superior game of the 2, and the reasons:

1. WoW graphics are better, even though eq2 engine tries to use the latest in special effects it just does not all meld together well, the WoW artists have clearly done a much better job and proven that there are things much more important than high polygon counts and dx9 effects.

2. WoW has PvP, EQ2 does not (not even duels last time i heard)

3. WoW qusts are much more imaginative and make you actually want to read the whole quest log instead of just the 'objective line'.

4. Not really any loading times in WoW unless you change continents on the boat, I have literally run for more than an hour through multiple zones and not seen a single loading screen, its all just sleek and seemless.

5. Although WoW may have borrowed some ideas from other MMOG's (its almost impossible not to) EQ2 on the other hand has shamelessly gone out of thier way to make thier game as close to WoW as possible apart from the parts they could not handle (like the 'fun factor' and the pvp) anyone who has played both game will know what i mean.

6. Eq2 has many more character voiceovers in place, but I honestly think these will just get annoying the more you talk to NPCs.

7. WoW and EQ2 BOTH have some of the best musical scores I've ever heard in a game to date, I rate them both at 10 out of 10 on music.

I'm sure I have forgotten loads of stuff here, maybe I will come back and add. Yes this may all seem a little biased but its just my honest opinion, in fact im still thinking of buying eq2 to play during WoW downtimes (http://www.roflcopter.com/)

Overall i like wow better , eq2 does have some neat features such as waypoints, housing, combat arts, but at the same time the graphics are good and bad, they look nice but the style is bland. The thing in EQ2 i enjoyed the most was the housing system. Best housing system i've seen in a game so far.

Again, I agree with the above reply that it sounds like you are fishing for the comments that you want to hear.

Both games seem to be really well done, I tend to favor WoW for many of the above posted reasons. There are many people, however, who see my reasons and hate each one, and thus play EQ2.

Personal preference is key... people still love FFXI, and after playing WoW I can't imagine ever playing that again.

Ok, Ill put in my 2 cents here, but I will be prepared to cower under my desk too...

I came from FFXI recently to WoW. But I also bought EQ2 on the release date, and have played both.

I came here today to try to read threads on where the fun is in WoW, or things that can lead me into the direction of fun, because I seem to be missing it.

WoW to me, seems like a kiddie MMORPG. And Im not saying this because of the graphics. Just the whole feel of the guys with the exclamation points over their heads. The fact that I've only died once, and most of the time, never even come close to dying. The fact that the only penalty for dying was having to run back to my corpse in complete safety. To me, it feels like MMORPGs for dummies.

I've seen people above talk about how interesting the quests are, but EQ2s seem more interesting to me. Also, the quest text 'scrolls' across the screen at a pace that a second grader would be saying "wtf, I can read 5 times this speed".

I tried to log in the other night, and was told I was number 130 in the queue, and that I would have to wait approximately 8 minutes to play.

Combat in WoW seems pretty boring so far also. I was bored with EQ2s combat at first coming from FFXI (which I did actually enjoy the combat 'strategy' in, but there were many other things I didn't like about it), but WoWs seemed even a step more dumbed down than EQ2.

Also, in EQ2, at least NPCs who don't give quests or sell something attempt to say something. I don't see any of them talking at all in WoW.

Thats not to say EQ2 is perfect. You have to be in your house to play merchant and sell your items. I tend to try to do this while sleeping/working. But, the servers are usually having a patch everyday (usually during sleeping/working times, and the patch time is actually fairly short, best Ive seen for an MMO yet). This patching boots me from the game, so I come home and I didn't sell anything because I was booted for patching.

I haven't been really fond of the EQ2 community so far, the FFXI community was generally better, but so far in WoW I haven't really run into a community at all. Feels mainly like a solo game.

EQ2 is a little buggier than WoW, I have on occasion run into invisible mobs that weren't supposed to be invisible, but nothing game breaking for me yet. Also, bugs are getting fixed on almost a daily basis, and alot of the ones that bothered me at all are already gone.

Neither is perfect, and I bought both (I was going to skip WoW after being happy with EQ2, but with the reviews it got I figured Id give it a fair shake). But after the free month on both of them is up, I think that EQ2 is going to continue to get my gaming dollars, where WoW will because a dust collector on my shelf of dead games...

Seriously Dinky... some of the things you don't like are things that help sell WoW to me. It's funny you should mention the exclamation marks... just today I commented to a coworker that I love those. Smiley: cool

I really like the accessibility of this game. I don't like the frustration of losing XP and I don't like to get home from work and sit down to a game that feels like, well, more work.

IMO, what it takes to play an EQ (the original) or a DAoC isn't brains, it's patience. And that's something I've never had a whole lot of. Smiley: banghead

I own EQ2 as well. When I pre-ordered both games ages ago, I had no idea they'd both come out within two weeks of each other. I like EQ2... in fact, I like it quite a bit. And I'm sure I'll spend more time in it, in the future... it's a great game, and there's so much I want to do beyond level 14 (which is where I stopped with my highest). However, on some of the EQ forums (Vault, in particular) I've heard people complain that EQ2 is a "dumbed down" version of the original.

Anywho, I'm just glad there are enough MMORPGs out there these days that we have a variety from which to choose. I remember when two choices were AC and EQ and I'd gotten tired of both. I'm pretty pleased to have two that I'm excited about at once! Smiley: yippee

I agree collectorx. Everyone I meet who likes EQ2 better seems to like the I need to suffer type of atmosphere or else it's to easy (a kiddie game).

I find that WoW is no doubt a simplier game then EQ2, but sometimes simlpicity is bliss. It still takes quite an amount of time invested to do tradeskills and level up to 60 for most people. I played 6-10 hours a day for over a month in closed beta and I was level 45. It's not a breeze to get to the top.

I find reading the quests in wow to be fun as well as advancing you character to the next area. In EQ2 I don't seem to feel any direction.

There is a lot more that could be added here, but I believe this can be summed up with if you like be fun and having (MMORPG for dummies) then you can join us in WoW.

On the otherhand if you need to suffer and be frustrated to enjoy a game then EQ2 is probably for you.
