Question's in the title. Their "official" FFXI guide was infamous for being sh*t-awful, I'm wondering if they did a decent job with the WoW guide or if this one also had no proof of being written by people who'd actually played the game. Can anyone who owns it break it down for me?

While I don't own it, I have only heard good things about it from this board.

Might pick up a copy, but i'm trying not to spend money till I get paid.

It has some very good info, and a fairly impressive list of equipment. I think it falls a bit short on the quests and maps areas but maybe that can be made up with the online updates.

The guide is actually pretty decent, in my opinion. I got it in the first place from a collectors stand-point, but then noticed that it's not half bad.

If you're new to the game, they've got a great detailed section that walks you through to about level 10 or so, teaching you the ways of the game.

The equipment lists and bestiary are also pretty well done. It's worth the $25, I'd say.

So far for beasts and finding NPCs in cities it has been a help for me. I haven't read the whole thing. (been to busy playing) I did notice so far though that they don't really go into telling you how to use skill points in the tree and how you should play this certain job. Which i like because that seems to be where they screwed up a lot in FFXI and they made too many cookie cutter molds and made some jobs sound useless. *cough* Warrior *cough* I played a Warrior as my main in FFXI and despised that guide for what they said about my job.

And on a lighter note they got a pretty good sense of humor in some of the cartoons added in it. I particularly like the one about the NE and Human and the reference to Goldilocks and the "3 fu**ing bears" as they put it.

I think it was worth the 25 dollars plus with them doing online updates for you to print out and put in that nifty little binder it comes with if you get the guide that my Gamestop called the CE Strategy Guide.

They did mess up the information on the class abilities. The stats for a lot of the abilities are off. However, that's the only major problem I've found. Everything else seems to be good. The maps and quest listings are especially helpful.

The quest checklists and map of each area are nice. That's about all i use it for.

Its a lot of book for the price. 431 pages and its small print. Packed with info. First 30 pages are devoted to guiding someone who has never played a MMORPG before, etiquette wise explaining how one should conduct themselves while playing with other. Very well written and a lot of people could refresh themselves by reading it. It then goes on to explain the game in more detail, the starting newbie areas and quests up to lvl 10 or so, races, classes ect.. It has a section on tradeskill, items, equipment and mobs. I havent gone over those sections in detail but seems pretty comprehensive. I think the guide was written just before item durability was introduced at the end of October so a few things are incorrect as written. The CE edition might have been updated by now though.

Overall I thought it was well worth the money as it doesnt push you to create a character a certain way, just gives you the data and lets you decide how to mold your character. The maps have been invaluable but those are also available online from multiple sources as well.

I still remember having to deal with invites for NIN from parties looking for a damage dealer. "But the guide says..."

I remember having to deal with no invites because of what that guide said about WAR.

I'm a MNK over there... tell me about it!

As for the Brady Guide for WoW. I did notice that their 'Death penalities' section is waaaaaay off compared to how it is now (it still lists xp loss as the penalty for using a Sprit Healer). Of course I do realize this was changed in one of the later patches of the OB.

I havn't registered my guide yet on Brady Games site so I'm not positive if any of this information has been corrected in an update yet.

Also, did anyone else check out the 'Binders' that they have avaliable for WoW on the Brady Games site? Looks like a strat guide that you can replace the pages in as new updated info comes out?

Edit: Okay, I'm blind... the post above me mentions the binders ;-) Also, as it was mentioned above me, with Alt-Tab, I've found coming here to look for NPC locations much more productive than searching through a highly unorganized list of locations on the maps the guide comes with (if I knew what section of town or what store they were in I wouldn't be looking it up... all I know is their name, which means scanning line after line looking to see where they really are).

I picked up the Brady guide and all in all it does have plenty of good info, but I would have liked to see a more expansive Quest section.

i.e when I am looking for tough condor meat for a quest, I would love to know where to hunt the birds without wandering around aimlessly...

I remember playing a bst to lvl 15 trying to get into a group in the dunes and not getting one because "Pets will hurt our expereince". I gave it up. This was because the strategy guide screwed up one line in the Bst section of the guide.

This was not true unless the pet was tough, but 90% of players had already had it set in their minds that bst are not for parties, all they can do is solo.

One little line in a guide booked screwed it all up :(

That's because the cartoons were done by Gabe and Tycho of Penny Arcade. I was considering buying the guide just for thier comics.

I got a copy a couple of days ago.. not what i expected on a strategy guide.. i think i has lots of useless information, and they should had concentrated more on the maps and on the quests.

I bought the guide, its a decent read, but i prefer Allakhazam for MMOG information.
