To check your video card, right click on your desktop and choose "Properties," then choose the far right tab entitled "Settings"

About half way down the window you will see something like "HP151 on ATI Radeon 9200SE" where the HP151 would be your monitor and the ATI Radeon 9200SE your video card.

Post your video card here and I can probably tell you how you're doing. If it's an "Intel Extreme" graphics chip, or any other motherboard graphics controller, you're going to need a new video card. If it's a GForce 5200 or higher or a Radeon 9200 or higher, you're ok.

Thanks,

I doubt your card will be able to run it. Your computer uses on-board graphics (I believe) and won't have enough processing power. Even if you can run it, it wouldn't be playable.

If budget is your main concern, I think the best card would be and ATI Radeon 9200 SE 128 Meg. This card should be available for about $50, assuming you have a geek-friend to install it for you.

Other people might have other cards to recommend, but in my opinion the Radeon 9200 SE is a very good card for those on a tight budget. If you have more money to spend, there are lots of options...

ewwwww onboard graphics, you dont have a graphics card per say, its being run from a chip on your mother board.
#6 Dec 01 2004 at 7:14 PM Rating: Decent
Thank you very much,I may check out how much it would be to get it installed. If they try to charge stupid ****(which they usually do) I'll get a friend to install it for me.)

(only read this next part if you have a spare sec)

Funny story on stupid installation fees. The people at Best Buy said to Install Norton(anti-virus) it would take a day or more if I did it myself. They tried to charge me 20 bucks for that ****.I may not know alot about computers, but any idiot could install Norton.Just watch out for people like that.

Thanks again for your help.

Learning about computers and installing stuff yourself has to be one of the most rewarding and cost saving experiences you can have. The more you know..."NBC chimes ding" (think it was nbc? was one of those stations)

Thanks for the tip.
Could you recomend anything to help me start this "experience"

Whats the max you want to spend, also what kind of graphics slot do you have? Looking for a way to check now without taking the cover off in case you dont know.
#13 Dec 01 2004 at 10:33 PM Rating: Default
Well FIRST you gotta know wether you have a AGP slot or not. A lot of companies dont put them in. If not you will have to go PCI.

Like I said before,i'm tryign not to spend alot, maybe 100 or so.

but as for the graphics slot,im not exactly sure.
My booklet says not to use cards that draw excessive current.it's designed to provide 2 amps (average) of +5power for each board/card.

If you still have the booklet see if you can find any info about the AGP slot. Have a feeling you dont have one tho.

Another way is you can take the side panel off and look, if you look for the line of pci slots if you have an agp its usually shorter then the pci slots.

Here is a site from Blizzard stating the Video cards that work and do not work with WoW. Make sure before you buy it that it will work with your motherboard.

I still have my books and all,it's just I havent seen anythign about the slots except in the upgrading booklet.I don't se anythign stating whether it's an AGp slot or not.

If its an intel processor its socket 478 if its AMD its socket A. And the AGP isnt shorter is closer to the end. And its a different color from the PCI's

No ones awake over at Gruntville, and I havent found a way to check the slot type through windows. Try taking the side panel off.

That graphics card won't work for WoW because it's not DX 9.0

Those are two cards that are top notch for pci. Tho you could go for something cheaper if you want to save money as long as its DX9 compatible. It's getting to the point where you need to upgrade your whole system. If you just want to play WoW for the next two years I would get one of those cards, if you plan to upgrade I would get something cheap and then get an agp or pci-e card when you get a new motherboard.

You are probably right, im going on memory and my agp is staggered so I might be thinking its shorter when its just an illusion.

by what you have given us, it seems you do have an agp slot, and the ati radeon 9200 is agp from what people have said.

You can also look at a g-force fx 5200 agp with 128ram. Works fine for the game.

Where'd you get that ATI Radeon 9200 SE for $50? That's pretty cheap.
