Got a small question about pvp.

I know that for melee attacks, shield can help alot, so does the defence..

but what about magic attaks ?
Shield = no use ?
defence= no use ?
resistance = the only thing that can help?

in other words, for a paladin/warrior, it is far better to fight a mage/warlock... with a 2 handed weapon ?
