#1 Nov 30 2004 at 5:41 PM Rating: Decent
But I have some questions about the game:
1.Are parties anything like FFXI and are they easy to find? I love the whole party system from FFXI and want to know if WoW is similar
2. I play FFXI on PS2. I want to get WoW for PC. Does it run well on a system that meets a the system requirements, with a GeForce FX?
3.Is there a great sense of accomplishment after you do somthing like gain a level, or find a rare item
4. Is it too easy?
5. Are there any monster to spend many hours to hunt, in the hopes of getting a rare item, similar to NM's?
6.Are the jobs and guilds and classes fun
7. Can you switch between any jobs you want?
8. Is there a sense of community?
9. Much lag?
10. Is it fun?

Thanks.

No. In FFXI, partying is the game. In WoW, partying is usually only for doing harder quests, instance dungeons, etc. While there are some great party challenges, you will spend a lot more time soloing.

It should run fine. For best results, make sure you have at least 512 megs of ram

It's not quite like FFXI. Then again, I've only been as high as L20. In FFXI, finishing AF or finally getting my Hornetneedle after 6 hours of camping for Bee Larvae or finally finishing Limit 1 felt AMAZING ... but then again, that was mostly because of the incredible amount of times required to get them.

No. Despite what you might have heard, WoW is challenging in it's own way...

Yes. Crafting is fun. You can't lose materials, so the challenge is finding the materials - which can be rare/expensive as you craft at the higher levels. The classes are fun. Every class is soloable, and every class has a good number of abilities to keep things interesting.

7. Can you switch between any jobs you want?

No. You cannot switch classes. You can however have up to 8 charactes per server.

The game has been out for 1 week ...

9. Much lag?

A bit - but Blizzard has been working on it and it has been improving drastically. Again - the game has been out for a week!

Yes. It feels a lot less like "work" than FFXI. But you have to try it and judge for yourself.

1.Parties definately can happen, and I'm sure mroe so at higher levels. But this game is not driven towards heavy partying the way FF is IMO.

2. I'm not sure on this one. :)

3. Definately, you get killer abilities as you level.

4. No.

5. Not sure on this yet, but even if so it won;t be like FF. The best of the best things you get in this game are basically like FF version of rare/ex.

6. I've become addicting to crafting in this game. It's easy and fun!

7. No, you cannot change class. You can create a different character. You get up 10 to characters per server (max of 50). You don;t pay extra for them.

8. Definately, especially when the Alliance needs to be brought down! :P

9. TONS of lag. But it's been public for just under a week now and they have many more people than they expected. I'm sure the lag issues will be resolved.

10. It's insanely fun.

Thanks a lot for the post; one of the most useful I have ever read an this server. You should be congratulated for convincing me to join up.

EDIT: About the 512 MB of RAM. I only have 256, how is that going to affect gameplay?

It will be slow, especially in busy areas like cities (just think Lower Jeuno).

Definitely worth upgrading if you can.

I'm a long-time lurker, first time poster on these forums.

just want to add that forming a group/party in WoW is VERY easy... just announce on the general chat that you're looking for a party for a certain mission, or just for fun, and you'll surely get responses.

i've had no problems grouping in WoW... compared to the problems i had in FFXI (but i was a mithra thief so...) trying to get a good group.
i would wait until you're around lvl 15 or so before you start grouping... the newb areas and main cities do have alot of jokers. at least on the PVP servers.

as far as your RAM question. it depends on what settings you want to run. i had 512 and wanted optimum settings at 1600x1200... it kind of choked up around highlypopulated areas, but now that i have a gig in there it's smooth as silk.

i'm sure at a lower resolution and some of the graphical features turned down 256 would do you fine... but dont hold me to that.

I just cancelled my FFXI account today. I may reactive it over time to keep my characters alive, but I think for now I'm pretty content with FFXI.

I've played FFXI since January this year. Some of my higher classes are RDM53, THF48, NIN26, WHM26, SMN20. Have some others below, but have all advance jobs unlocked. Plus my SMN has almost all the spirits (except Thunder and Dark), so I'm leaving a lot behind.

Anyways, let me try to answer your questions to the best of my abilities.

QUESTION #1: Are parties anything like FFXI and are they easy to find?

ANSWER #1: Every class can solo to the level cap (which is at 60 at the moment). So you are not required to join parties to level, but it is an option. Different looting things can be set up depending on the party and all. Some quests you will have to join parties for to get done, as they go in hard areas, or if you want to complete a quest way before you can solo it.

As to party dynamics, I think everyone in this game is more pleasant to party with. It's not a FORCED party, but rather people joining together because they want to. Things stay the same, Priest if you need a healer (there are alternatives too), a tank, etc. I believe you can have 5 or 6 in a party, not sure. Never been in a party where it reached max.

QUESTION #2: I play FFXI on PS2. I want to get WoW for PC. Does it run well on a system that meets the system requirements, with a GeForce FX?

ANSWER #2: My computer is really nice, so I can't comment on my computer; however, my boyfriends computer is a bit older than mine and has mostly minimum requirements from what I recall. I've played it on his machine before, and it runs fine. Not sure about the GeForce FX though.

QUESTION #3: Is there a great sense of accomplishment after you do something like gain a level, or find a rare item?

ANSWER #3: Yes, I think so. Early on soloing you can gain levels pretty quick. It takes me a while to level now. I'm a level 21 Tauren Hunter now. Takes a bit to level even on your own. I feel great when I level and find rare things.

QUESTION #4: Is it too easy?

ANSWER #4: Too easy in what respect?

QUESTION #5: Are there any monsters to spend many hours to hunt, in the hopes of getting a rare item, similiar to NMs?

ANSWER #5: There are lots of NMs, but in this game they are referred to as Elite monsters. I'm not sure if many of us even know if particular ones drop items like NMs in FFXI. They are rough on your own, unless you have quite a few levels on them, but they are fun.

QUESTION #6: Are the jobs, guilds, and classes fun?

ANSWER #6: The jobs are fun. I've got a Rogue and a Hunter right now. Rogue's deal nice damage, and I love my Hunter. Hunter seems like a RNG/BST hybrid. You can have many characters, so I'd recommend trying different classes.

QUESTION #7: Can you switch between any job you want?

ANSWER #7: No, not one character. It's not like FFXI. If you want to play a different class, you'll need a different character.

QUESTION #8: Is there a sense of community?

ANSWER #8: I think so. A lot of us in The Barrens, since I've been there a lot lately, and we all seem to get along, help each other, and stuff. Of course different regions have different general chat.

QUESTION #9: Is there lag?

ANSWER #9: Only if the server has lots of people on it. I only have encountered this once really and then shortly after it went down for maintenance. Went back up and it was just fine! :)

QUESTION #10: Is it fun?

ANSWER #10: Yes! I love it. Lots of quests, places to explore, and all sorts of fun stuff.

I was a hardcore FFXI player for months and months, but I had to cut down my play time drastically when college started up again this fall. I only tried out WoW because it runs on OSX, so I can play it in my design studio at school. Having said that, I'm never going back to FFXI for anything other than seeing old friends and riding chocobos around.

Graphically, WoW isn't as beautiful as FFXI, but there are reasons for that, and the game is extremely good-looking in its own right. Also, there's obviously no FF nostalgia. No chocobos, no moogles, no airships. Other than that, WoW blows FFXI away on all fronts. Almost everything that was wrong with FFXI is right with WoW.

The classes are far, far more balanced. No class is grossly overpowered the way that RNGs and RDMs were in FFXI. You can solo effectively past level 10, and grinding isn't the only way to gain experience. The game relies heavily on your ability to do solo quests, which (more often than not) give you more experience than fighting monsters alone. It's much, much more fun, and it doesn't require you to play for 6-10 hours at a time in order to get anywhere.

Also, they really perfected all of the little things that FFXI had neglected. Everything from your bow actually following its target when you're firing, to the zone-to-zone transition being seamless, to the crafting system being worlds better. There aren't chocobos to ride, but there are tigers and undead steeds and raptors, which you can buy. There aren't nearly as many annoying little imperfections.

And the lag isn't that bad, even at peak hours, even on the more heavily populated servers. Also, like previous posters mentioned, the game's brand new. They've been creating tons of new servers and they're constantly working on getting rid of lag problems.

I don't think you'll regret switching over.

Keep in mind on the lag...

It's really only temporary. There is lag now, but that's not to say it won't be gone in a week or two.

Blizzard wasn't prepared for the popularity of this game. They added 40+ new servers in just the 2nd/3rd day to deal with all the people.

They're still working on getting rid of the lag.

Definately not unplayable, but at times it may be, depending on number of people playing.

Don't let that be a deciding factor. It's going to change.

I played FFXI since NA release and I love it. It's a great game for grouping and I have a ton of friends on my server.
After I hit 70 I started the WoW closed Beta. I loved it right away. It is a completely differnt game in so many ways. It's quest driven and you get a feeling of satisfaction every time you run back to an NPC to turn in a quest. FFXI was a grind. There is no way around it. You ar reliant on a specific PT make-up, example , Paladin ir Ninja tank and a Whm Rdm and or Bard with 2 Dmg dealers that could pull off a good Skill Chain.
Think about it this way. Try and walk through eldime necropolis with no Invis or sneak and live at lets say lvl 50. Not happeneing. In WoW you can actually run from aggro.
Also FFXI is a very elitist game. It took me so long to save up money for my lvl 70 Pal gear that it almost drove me mad. But once I pulled it off I got a great feeling of satisfaction. But without the gear ( I always made it a point to have the best i could) people will look down at you.
WoW is better in many ways. Questing for exp, exploration ect...you don't feel like it's a job to lvl like in FFXI. When I got a pt in FFXI ( sitting around for hours waiting for an invite was always fun) You basically are expected to stay grouped for at least 3 hours. And you had to stay at your computer 98% of that time. Now I can group for killer exp doing quests ect and do it with 1 friend or if I want I can solo with any class all the way.
Also the PvP is better. I'm not a PvP uber 1337 dork that wants to go aroud killing everything, no offense:) but if someone makes me mad I can alway challenge the to a duel and beat there head in with a big hammer....oh so fun.

I can find a safe spot...go afk ..chill out and not worry about letting 5 other ppl down. Graphically its much better and transportation is much more innovative and quite frankly it's awesome.
I can go on and on. When it comes down to it though these are jusy MY reasons for changing over. It really is in a sense apples and oranges. WoW is like a completely different kind of game and Blizzard has outdone themselves. Every facet so far has been ery enjoyable with the exeption of server lag which is an issue I am confident Blizz will resolve in time.
Most of my FFXI Linkshell is changing over.

I would highly recomend you at least try WoW and I think you will understand what I'm talking about.

My computer just meets the requirements and most of the time it runs fine. However, in the bigger cities like the Orc capital it runs in slide show mode. I have all the graphic options set to low. I plan on upgrading my ram and possible video card because of how unbearable it can become. Usually it takes me about five minutes in the Orc capitol to walk a distance equivalent to running from the entrance of Lower Jenuo to the mog houses.

I edited out crowed areas because it really is only a problem in crowed areas that are very graphically intense like capitol cities. For example I was partying early today near a camp on echo islands. The area was not very detailed so even though the area had about 6 PCs and 2-4 NPCs it still ran fine.
