Fast XP, Grinding Vs. QuestsFollow

#1 Nov 30 2004 at 4:44 PM Rating: Decent
KK heres the deal I'm lvl 17 on my rogue and so far I have yet to kill any monsters for the point of xp alone, I've just gotten all the quests I can and kill only what I need to kill to complete the quest, then I do the quest and move on. But this whole time I've gotten the feeling that I could be lvling faster simply by ignoreing the whole quest system and just killing monsters for xp. Any one do it both ways? what are your guys opions on this?

Obviously you'd be getting more xp by doing both the quests (and their associated monsters) and random monsters you come across along the way.

But then, I'm not killing the random monsters just for xp. I'm killing them for leather, items to sell, etc..

So in the end, I'm leveling/farming/questing all at the same time.

There is no such thing as just grinding for xp in this game, because with every kill you are accomplishing something other then just leveling, you're farming and/or questing.

I've found the quests involving the requirement to kill mobs the best Smiley: smile

You get the xp/drops from the mobs, then close the quest out for a decent xp bonus.

I accept just about every Quest, as you'll find sometimes you almost accidentally run across the goal... I had accepted the Dun Morough "elite" mob quest (forgot his name, started with a "V"), and the next day, as I was tracking down a copper vein, came across this bug ugly Sasquatch-looking thing right next to my copper! Obviously, I had to kill it to mine in peace, and after collecting my loot (which was a silly fang)... surprise! I finished a Quest. Nice xp too, if I recall.

If you happen to not complete a particular quest and end up leveling above it's useful range, just abandon it... Always have plenty to do...

I have never camped for xp... Drops, maybe, but not for xp, that just comes naturally.

Yes the fastest way to reach the top in WoW is to do a few select quests while grinding away on elite mobs with a good group.
The ppl who do that are the ones who are the highest lvl but they tend to have crappy equip since they sometimes don't get the really good quest rewards.

The most efficient, if you count out the fun factor of the game, is to do very few elite quests/high reward quests and instances.

From what I can tell, the best way is a mixed approach. Get all the quests in town, and pick a direction with a bunch of quests that way. GO and do them, killing everything you see til then. Finish all the quests. If you still have bag room, kill some more. Then turn in all the quests (killing your way back to town). Repeat in a new direction.

The key is to not return to the same area multiple times, and not to spend too much time running with empty bags or running from one end of a zone to another. YOu really want to do both quests and grinding- grinding gives good xp, but quests give you items that make killing easier, and they count as up to 20 kils you don't need to do.

So, my primary objective is to complete quests. With that comes a decent amount of killing and so I can say that just questing will move you ahead quite well.

I am also a skinner/leather worker so I kill for the skins. Good XP in that.

I also have a guild that actively supports the efforts of its crafters, so we farm linen when we can for our tailors, for example...usually if I find through a quest a humanoid camp dropping lots of linen, I will stay past my quest limit and farm the linen...and I will say that if there are others there and they are questing and wanting the kills I do not do this...I move on and let them have them.

When our guild had a tailor hit the level to make 8-slot bags we all wanted some...which is 9 wool per...so we were all finding places to farm for the wool for our bags.

The point of this is that the whole time I was supporting these other endeavors I was getting XP.

I have not just gone and killed for my own XP randomly...but when I recently trained a new pet, I did a little bit of killing to get my pet up a level or two (as a hunter my pet is an essential weapon...if he is too many levels below my prey, he does not hold agro properly and cannot withstand the beatdown I require from him in order to earn his kibble.)

The best benifit i see to doing the quests in the the fame you get for diffrent fractions, i know am honored in Ogramar and get a 10% discount on all items and if i take it higher new special items will open up for me at higher reputation that wont be open for lesser rep players.

This is basically what separates WoW from FFXI.

You get NOTHING good doing quests in ffxi. Mabye a select few, but NO exp at all. Because most of the time, you cant kill the mobs required until they are Too Weak correct? So there goes the xp for that. So i basically killed 200 mobs, for no xp, and a stupid clump of moss worth jack, but ooo raise my "FAME"....

sigh, i wish i could have those hours of questing in ffxi back.

Only ONE i can remember was fun : Eco-Warrior.
Why : First chance for a big alliance and was fun, and HEY! i got exp for it!

Well, I Mostly Go The Questing Route.. But Sometimes I Like To Vary Up My Routine... Ill Pick Flowers With Herboligy.. Killing Everything In Sight The Whole Time... Or Sometimes I Just Want To Go Explore This New Game I Got.. Killing Things Along The Way, This Has Gotten Me Into Trouble A Few Times, But Im Happy With My Rate Of XP...

If you want to earn exp at the fastest rate possible, your best bet is to kill NON-elite creatures just below your level en masse.

Reason this is superior to elites: Elites take too much out of you. Your elite might be worth triple the exp, but I can kill at least four mobs in the time you take down one elite and recover.

Reason this is superior to higher-level mobs: Same as above.

Reason this is superior to much-lower-in-level mobs: Eventually they stop being worth a significant amount of exp. At one level below you, you should still be able to move from mob to mob at close to the same rate, without this experience drop-off.

Reason this is superior to quests: downtime. When you do a quest, you have to (a) get the quest, (b) go to where the quest is done, (c) do the specifics of the quest rather than just deal with whatever you encounter, and (d) go back for the reward. In compensation you get the value of at most 20 creature kills. At one kill per minute, is the quest worth the extra downtime? More often than not, no.

Reason this is INFERIOR to quests: It's boring as hell. But if all you care about is PL-ing to 60, then hey, go for it.

I'm really into the profession-thing, so I have multiple active characters. One thing I try to do is always camp from an Inn or city, so that when I come back I get the XP bonus.

What I read is that the XP bonus doesn't affect quest XP. So if that's true... a quest that would give you 250 XP when you're totally rested should give you 250 XP when you're not rested. However, a mob that gives you 100 XP when your bar is purple will give you as high as 200 XP when you're rested.

So when I log in and I'm in the "rested" state, I try not to complete any quests. It's okay to kill mobs that are part of a quest, but I don't want to chew up rest XP on something that doesn't give a bonus.

Does that make sense? Kinda hard to say in print. :)

Anyway, that's just a small thing, but I like to think it's useful.

Hehehe, one thing that's neat about rested exp is that the quests don't affect it. Maybe you have noticed that your blue marker moves a peg when complete a quest?
What I'm trying to say is that quest-exp does not decrease your rested exp bonus, it's a fixed amount of exp that you can only get from mobs.

Again, killing takes you out of the focus of the game, which is questing. If you do not quest you are going to miss out on good upgrade gear and good reputation boosts.

Questing gives you good XP and gets you into new zones and has you fight new things. It also lets you participate in some of the story lines, which are actually quite fun...and funny. Pay attention to the quest when you get it and what is said. I laugh at them more often than not.

When you quest, yes you have to do all of that bothersome travelling and talking to NPCs and stuff...I suppose it would be best if you just stood in one place and hit the autokill button and walked away...come back in three hours and have 10 levels. But hey, grinding creeature kills is stupid and boring in a game like this, with such a fun rich story line and accesible and rewarding quests.

If you feel the need to kill grind, do it on your way to and from quest locations. Pick up a quest...kill your way to the quest site. Do quest. Kill your way back to turn in quest. Best of both worlds.

I guess I just do not understand the I-must-level-even-if-it-is- not-fun mentality. Doing finite calculations to find just what mobs you can kill 5000 of to get you the most XP, and then standing in some corner of a zone by yourself killing the same stupid creature over and over and over is just not my idea of a fun game...especially an MMO.

Yeah it may be slower to kill elites, but perhaps it is more fun. :-)

When I quest, I head towards the area where the quest is.

I kill everything on the way. Kill everything there, not just the quest related monsters. Kill everything on the way back.

I get ALOT of exp. I get ALOT of items to sell for money. I get ALOT of leather and hides to use for my leatherworking.

To me, that's the most efficient way to do it.

I'm farming/questing/gathering materials/leveling all at the same time.
