Melee combat comparison please?Follow

Hi, I'm coming over from FFXI. Please, I'm not trying to tout one over the other or anything like, I just need a few facts please.

The one thing that kep me around in FFXI for so long was melee combat mechanics. Skillchains in particular were cool. The thief class in particular I found to be a technical role that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Can someone give me a description of melee combat in WoW? Are there weaponskills, or skill combinations etc, and if possible, how might they draw parallel or distinction from FFXI melee combat mechanics?

Thanks!

Combat in WoW is all about the abilities.

Read up on the different classes and the skills/abilities they get.

There are ALOT more then FFXI.

Combat is all about what abilities to use and when.

For instance, as a Hunter I have a pet, so I do combat like this:

Aspect of the Hawk (increases ranged attack power)
Hunter's Mark (increases my ranged attack power against the target)
Pet Attack
Concussion Shot (slows the monsters movements)
Serpant Sting (causes damage over time, kind of like a poison)
Auto Shot (just keep firing until it's dead)

During all this my pet is attacking. Sometimes the pet will lose aggro so the monster will come after me.

Once it's too close, I can't use ranged attacks any more.

So when it's charging me, I activate:

Aspect of the Monkey (increases my dodge chances)

When it's within melee range I:

Wing Clip (damaging attack that slows the monster)
Raptor Strike (extra damage attack)
Attack (continuously attacks the monster)

And repeat Raptor Strike/Wing Clip as needed.

There are alot of other abilities that I don't use.

Combat in WoW is much more fun. You have to pay attention alot more then in FFXI.

FFXI was just timing. Wait until you have TP up, then do the skillchain.

Well since you liked Thief in FFXI, i'll give you a good run down (or at least try) of the Rogue in WoW.

Instead of WS's you get the trade off of a lot of abilities instead. Which in my opinion is a very nice trade off as it makes you able to do more not only in your party, but for yourself.

For Rogue's the two things that determine everything for you is your Energy bar, and your Combo Points.

Energy Bar - At the begining of a fight your Energy Bar is 100, and all your abilities cost Energy to use, note this number will never go above 100 except in a special case. It regenerates quite fast during the course of the battle.

Combo Points - These are points you build over the course of a fight using various abilities, and their purpose is to be used to execute "Finishing Moves". The more combo points the more effective the "Finishing Move", but the max combo points are 5.

Here is a good run down of how my fights go at level 17.

Stealth when I see my prey.
Get behind them and use Garrot which gives me 1 Combo Point.
Use my combo point to activate Slice n Dice.
Once I have energy I hit with a Sinister Strike twice in a row.
Then use up both combo points with an Eviscerate.

In most cases the mob is either dead by the end, or doesn't make it to the Eviscerate. The rare mob that lives through that usually only has 1 hit left in them anyways.

Also, as a Rogue, you get two similar abilities to that of Sneak Attack

Back Stab, which does damage when you're being the mob. You get it at level 4

Ambush, which does a massive amount of damage while stealthed and behind the mob. You get it at level 18.
#6REDACTED, Posted: Nov 30 2004 at 5:45 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I used ambush to solo bezzlain in RC. It worked wonders. Doing 117 for one hit with a dagger aint bad, even though my higest damage is 182.

As my rogue I will generally stealth, then ambush.. wait for 75/80 energy, then gouge and backstab, repeat again, then unleash a 5 combo Eviserate (sp). Granted most XP mobs won't last nearly that long, I was soloing some lower level elite stuff today and that was killing them pretty quick.

Ambush and Backstab are like SA, but you can only use them with a dagger in your main hand. There is nothing like TA (at least that I have found). There aren't any skill chains in WoW, but there are a lot more abilities to use and manage then FF gives you. WoW also puts more stock into weapon types, so you can spec in certain weapon types to give you an advantage, rather then have a pre-defined letter grade in a certain weapon.

I've found it different from FF, but at the same time quite fun = ]

#8REDACTED, Posted: Nov 30 2004 at 6:21 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I am a more in your face rogue. I usually use my gun to pull then do Sinister Strike 2x Eviscerate sinister strike slice and dice then sinister strike and eviscerate. If it gets that far.

Got tired of the grind. The higher level you are, the more time you spent doing "work" so that you could play.

Rediculous. Gave my stuff and account to my LS.
