I didn't want to hijack Lamnethx's topic, so here's mine.

*WARNING--FFXI stories ahead*

Okay, this all started when I played FFXI. *shudder* I started playing and gradually I realized...wow, my computer's messed up. I have a fairly brand new (about 2 months old) Sony Vaio. Well, I started playing FFXI when it was new. (the computer that is.)

One of the things that would happen is freezing. I would be zoning (sometimes just walking around innocently) and all the sudden-BAM!-black screen (if zoning) or just plain frozen. No telling when it would strike, just outta nowhere. And to make it more frustrating, sometimes it would restart and sometimes it wouldn't. (the restart when crash box was checked.) This happened frequently.

The other thing is more perplexing. I have 1 phone line in my house, and it's used for the phone and the DSL. Well, when I was playing FFXI, when the phone would ring-VOILA!-the server percent (connection to the server) would go down, down, down, boom-0%! Then, of course, I would be kicked off. This happened ALL THE TIME! It happened so much that when I would join a party, I would have to say, "If my phone rings, I get kicked off." I found myself typing many a time "CRAP!! D/C"
Regarding this, I've heard about a line filter. Does anyone else have only 1 phone line and DSL in their homes? Would a line filter help? (Help as in get rid of this problem)

If anyone needs any of my computer specs, just tell me. Just so you know, if you need to know my video card, tell me how to find that out. If anyone could help me, I will worship you forever. Please, please, please, help me. I want to play WoW so much....

PS- Sorry if it was a little long

First of all your router (modem) must be connected in the FIRST telephone socket, the socket that breaks all other lines when picked up. If your router isn't put in the phone may interrupt your DSL line, call and ask your ISP about this if you're unsure what I'm talking about. I'm not really sure what the english terms for this is, and as for the freezing part I suggest posting this on the FFXI forum as they most likely know more about FFXI freezes or contact the support center.

Good luck.

Edit: Noticed there was a Freeze thread and posted my other resopnse there.
cheers and stuff :P

Thank you! I'll go look at the router now. Do you think if it froze during FFXI it'll freeze during WoW?

Oook....Confusing setup. I imagine the dude that came and installed it got it right....I hope. There's a netopia box and a netgear box and they're connected by some lines. In the netopia box, there's something plugged into the DSL and Ethernet plugs. A line is running from the wall to an ITW Linx box. Another line is running from the wall to the netgear box. And last of all, something is running under the house to my computer to give me the connection.

Lordy, I know nothing about connections. Please excuse my stupidity.

OK. For the connectivity problems, I'll try and help out as best I can. I'm like 99% sure the problem you are encountering is because you do not have any line filters. I'm amazed that you don't have any, because any DSL provider should provide them to you with your setup kit. Anyways, what you will want to do is put a line filter on EVERY non-DSL line in your house. This includes satellite receivers, fax machines, analog modems, etc. Any device that connects to a phone jack other than your DSL modem. Do not put a filter on the line going from the jack to your DSL modem. You can buy these line filters ( ADSL Microfilters ) from your local Radio Shack, Circuit City, Best Buy, etc. They should be cheap.

Try this, and I guarantee you that you will no longer have this problem. The only other thing I can think of is that perhaps you live in an ancient house with extremely bad internal wiring. But it would have to be really bad. The house I'm in has some horrid wiring, but I still get very nice signal. Although, if I try to use any device without a filter on it, the same thing happens to me.

Hope this helps.

What? Sorry to say this, but that makes NO sense. I've been using and working with DSL for a few years. Here's what I can tell you:

Firstly, you can attach the modem anywhere to any phone line in the house. BUT, you MUST filter any phones that conenct to the phone lines. The DSL company should have provided you with little filters. They plug into the phone jack and then you plug your phone into the filter. The modem plugs directly to the wall-jack.

If you don't have the filter on the phone, then you get interference from the phone. The interference is minimal when the phone is not in use, but if a call comes in, or one is made out, then all hell breaks loose.

Try this, disconnect your phone and log into the game. Call your line from a cell phone or get someone else to call you and see if you get kicked out of the game. Chances are you won't because your phone is not connected. If this experiment goes like I outlined, get a filter on your phone line. Call the DSL provider and tell them you need one. They should have provided them when you got the service.

That could be. I've never been to Sweden :) We should do an exchange trip.

Thank you all so much. It seems line filters will solve my problems, because it's fine when the phone's unplugged. I'll get some shortly. Rate ups all around!
