PvE, PvP, RPFollow

I'm sick of FFXI so I'm moving. Reasons? Over-beaten, but in short it's the solo/party thing. I have a wife and a kid and just can't committ 5 hours per night to playing (well, 4 hours lfg and 1 hour "playing").

I love role-playing my character, I'm an old-school pen-and-paper D&D player.

I don't really like the idea of PK'ng.

So, it would appear that either a PvE or RP server would be my best bets. Any info would be quite helpful. Thanks!

As you progress a lot of the quests you can take will take place in contested territories, where players of the opposing faction can attack you on sight on PvP servers. WoW doesn't force you to group for XP but a lot of the time you're just safer if you have a couple of friends with you in these disputed areas.

In a PvE server people can't attack you on sight in contested territories. In both kinds of servers you are safe if you're in your faction's territory, unless you attack the opposing faction first.

Personally I'm starting to find the vulnerability to ganking stressful... it was enough avoiding those level 24 mobs as a lv 18 in Ashenvale without the Night Elf hunters and druids on my tail....

I'm in an RP server and I love it. The only problem I've ever had with it was today.

In ratchet, a NE Druid was standing around laughing at Hoarde with PvP off. just wandering around town /laugh at all the orcs/trolls/taurens she could find. Nothing we could do, not even tell her off because she cant understand us.

Heh I have to agree. I'm on a RP server but I already promised myself when in Horde territory I'll have my PvP flag up. So all the horde on the Feathermoon Server can just bring it! Of course with that said I'll try to make sure I don't come there with just my pet tiger and have some back up with me *chuckles*

I play on a PvE server, friend chose it since he was first to install and first to play. Raids into the Barrens seem pretty common, so if I want to PVP on lightbringer it seems I will be able to find the chance pretty easily.

Would have loved to go onto a rp server, but at least I got to name the Guild were putting together.

I'm loving playing on a PvP server. Raids happen all the time, and on Bloodscalp, all of the Alliance people seem to suck. Me and two other rogues were able to take out 5 18-22 Alliance groups. Just walking around a contested territory makes me sit on edge, and when I run into someone, I either kick ass or get my ass kicked.

There really aren't many griefers who will just **** you off by camping at the spirit healer or anything, just people looking for a good fight.

I would definitely recommend the RP servers.

For the most part, people seem to be staying in character (with the occasional ooc comment or question but at least the understanding is that normally folks are ic) which makes a huge difference not only in immersion but also in how people interact. Even the folks that I've found irritating have been irritating in a way that is in character... which makes it entertaining as well.

I did try creating a character on a non-RP server but casual encounters with other players detracted from my immersion in the world whereas on the RP server these (at least so far) usually add to it.

Note: This wasn't to imply that a style of play that stays in character is in any way superior... obviously, it isn't something everyone enjoys. But if you enjoy immersing oneself in the world and that is part of your enjoyment then the RP servers foster this.
