Gaming LCD Monitor question...Follow

A new game deserves some new hardware!

Being the chump I am, when LCD monitors were new and expensive, I bought one... In fact, I paid $700 for a 15" Viewsonic LCD, which had a 25 MS response time. I did it to save desk space, and didn't realize how crappy it would be for gaming...

Anyway...

I'm thinking of buying a new monitor. My PC is exclusively for gaming - so that's my only concern. My budget is limited (due to my stupid gf insisting we "save" ... sheesh what do girls know Smiley: oyvey ).

The 2 monitors I have been looking into thus far are the following (links provided):

LG 1710S for CDN$359 (US$305)

OR

BenQ FP767-12 for CDN$409 (US$347.65)

The BenQ has 12 MS response time, which someone told me makes it a great gaming monitor... I'm not set on these two either, but I can't afford to spend any more than about $450 CDN including tax (and we pay a lovely 15% tax).

Any suggestions or help would be very much appreciated! Help me make my WoW experience SUPER!

Thanks~~

Yuck, ***** LCD's. I hate them so much.

No matter what they say there is always a horrible glare on those things, I have seen some very nice ones in the past, but no way in hell anyone in their right mind should pay $1000+ on a monitor :O

I used to have a Samsung 955 DF 19" CRT... Beautiful monitor that I spend a ******** on way back when. Sadly, space is a big issue (poorly designed desk) so is has to be LCD.

I purchased a Viewsonic VP171B last year and I couldn't be happier. No 'glare' no distortion, no fading, excellent colours.
With Viewsonic, only buy their P (professional) series. The rest of the pack is inferior.

I don't like Samsung as a brand. I've had problems with them in the past, so I'm not a big fan. As for BenQ, I hear good things. But they're a relatively new company and I don't think they've been 'tested' by the marketplace yet.

If I were you, I'd look for a Viewsonic, Dell (yes, they make decent LCDs) or IBM.

As they say "U get what u pay for." If it was me I would get the BenQ model. It looks very nice and has better MS time then the LG LCD.

Is Response time MS the critical factor for gaming? Is refresh rate? Both?

My monitor has a response time of 16ms and I have noticed NO blurring or anything.

I've got an LG L1720P and it's been fine for gaming, including Doom 3.

The newer LG LCD monitors are all coming with a 12ms response time, just like the other heavy hitters in the LCD industry. Companies such as LG, Sony, Samsung and BenQ all make fantastic monitors, but I most definitely feel that for the money, the LG 1720 is just about the best thing since sliced bread, just as long as you have DVI outputs on your video card. If not, then you may be better off investing in a higher quality CRT monitor if you have the space.

Why can I not find a single good monitor review on the internet? I've been googling for 1.5 hours (while waiting in queue) and almost nothing good at all... Every review I have found is out of date - old models, etc.

Anyone have any good sites?

Or any more advice??

Thanks a rateups for everyone who helped so far ...

As a rule of thumb the faster the response time the less "ghosting" that takes place. The response time also directly effects the refresh rate of the LCD. Try and choose a 16ms or less which equates to about a 60hz refresh rate a 12 ms will give ya close to 83hz.

If you can go to a large Electroncs store Best Buy, Compusa Circuit City and compare models for quality of picture etc. Ask a salesperson if they would be able to demo a game on it preferably one of the newer demanding games that will really push the limits of the monitor (remember the sales peeps are there to help you make a purchase so most will be willing to help you choose just the right one!)If they won't help get a Manager be polite about it and tell them you are basing your purchasing decision on the quality of the product. Then of course leave the store promptly after making up your mind or they will take all your money! Try www.newegg.com for some of the best prices out there on computer gear.

One more IMPORTANT NOTE for optimal picture quality you will need to operate the LCD at it's native display setting. so if you choose a large monitor lets say a 19" it will most likely have a native Display of 1200x1024 Make sure your video card can handle the resolution your LCD needs to display at. If you go lower or higher then Native it forces the monitor to guestimate what a combined pixel's color should be and make everything look fuzzy the LCD can't shrink pixels like a CRT can. A pixel is either on or off can't turn half a pixel off. Keep this in mind especially if you have an older video card or you will be forced to make a decision push your card to its limits and drop your frame rate way down Bleh! or have the pictur look fuzzy Bleh! Not very good choices.

So first find the product that you like best second price shop online for the best prices 3 make your purchase!

Both of them are critical as far as gaming goes. MS is more for the blurry pics or ghosting when traveling and fast frame rates. (ex: Need for Speed Underground)

And the refresh rate is for keeping the colors looking more vibriant, More sharp as they say.

Refresh rate has nothing to do with display quality on lcds. They almost all run at 60hz at their native resolutions. The reason refresh rate doesnt matter, is because with an lcd, the pixels stay on, as opposed to a crt which flashes the pixels at the refresh rate (meaning, 60, 75, 85, etc times per second). I recently replaced my old 19" crt with a dell 2001fp, which is a 20.1" lcd, with 16ms response time (response time is the time it takes for a pixel to change black to white, and to black again). I've also got a a 25ms 15" lcd that I use on my other computer - I wouldnt want to use it for gaming tho, as the ghosting can be noticable. This isnt a problem with 16ms or faster lcds.

Projectors are great for watching movies and the occasional gaming session, but I wouldnt want to use mine (an infocus x1) for gaming all the time. The cost of replacing bulbs alone would be prohibitive, but also sitting in the dark gets old after a while. :)

And another thing. I got a ProView 15" monitor and it is WAY better than my CRT. I mean its clearer and everything. And the CRT is from Dell. Its supposedly one of the best monitors. My refresh rate goes up to 85Hz and I dunno the response time.

Jord, what is your processor? Unless you're running a 64bit rig from AMD, you DO need to upgrade it more than your monitor! XD

Running a P4 1.5 GHz w/ ATI Radeon 9800 XT 128

I get a good fraterate in WoW (30-50, depending) but it looks choppy and shadowy on my monitor, just like FFXI did. It's because I have a 25 ms monitor... I would like to replace my entire comp, but I'm going to make this one last another year then get a new one based on PCI Express ... Can't have it all at once though.

Well incase you still havent found a review.

LG 1710S - Review

The review is only 1 page, clicking next on it takes you to other LCDs.

BenQ FP767-12 - Review

Same site as above one so clicking next takes you to other LCD reviews.

Its stupid to go PCI-E. 16X aint even gonna be used for a WHILE. And 1.5GHZ? Thats bottlenecking the **** outta your card. I get 30FPS with EVERYTHING maxed. ANd my card aint half as good as yours. New CPU dude. Get it.

To everyone telling him to get a new comp. How about you buy him the new comp, as you all seem to be made of magical money. Hell while your at it, buy us all new computers.

To all you saying LCD's suck. Gotta have backup to the punch, or else it just seems like hot air. My friend has an LCD I forget brand and all that, but everything on his looks fine.

I'm a CRT user because I like bigger resolutions first and foremost. My 19-20" CRT is fine and beautiful. Now all I need is to wait for holidays to roll over so I can actually spend money on myself and get a new vid card.

You want one of the best I have a Samsung 710N or the 710T, with 12ms response and 17" for under $400 on the 710N you can't beat it. That is what I game on and there is NO going back to CRT!
