"Helping" with a kill ?Follow

#1 Nov 26 2004 at 3:30 PM Rating: Decent
I've started a troll rogue, fun time so far. I've played rogues in several MMORPG's (eq, ffxi) because I like melee damage dealer types, and especially like backstabbing. Often when I pass another player who's fighting a mob I'll give the mob a poke or two in order to hasten its death. I've never really thought of the consequences until now and wondered how you would react to someone attacking a mob you have engaged knowing there's no chance of losing credit for the kill. Would it upset you?

It doesnt upset me, since I ussually still get good exp, but having others attack your mob still causes a loss in exp.

You take a bit of their exp away - in proportion to the amount of damage you do.

Try to avoid "helping out" unless they are losing the fight.

One issue I've been having with this, is my pets (Warlock). When I have them set on defensive, half the time they won't attack without me forcing them to, which is a pain. Agressive is much nicer, however they take it upon themselves to "help" every other player around me, lol.

Any suggestions on pets?

I have a similar question. Does healing somebody who is in a fight take away from there experience? I donft think it would be I would not want to unintentionally annoying someone.

The more damage someone does to a mob the less exp you get. If someone much higher level than you took the final blow on a mob that was 3/4 2/4 health, youd most likely not get exp/get very little.

Actually, if you pull a mob, someone attacks and kills it themselves, you still get the full exp. It's anti-KS code in WoW, and I love it. They don't get exp as long as you injured it first, and also can't loot the body. Unless they've changed that since Beta 2, it should remain the same. (I hope so)

Actually, if you pull a mob, and someone else does all the damage to it around your level, you will get about half exp. If someone much higher level than you kills the mob, you wont get any, thus to stop PLers.

sometimes i do catch myself backstabbing a mob someone else is fighting just to help them out, but so far noone has complained to me, in fact sometimes it has saved them. I think 99% of ppl dont mind if ur just walking thru, cause the exp cut isnt that much, and its just one instance, and it's just that much quicker that they will get to the nxt mob. So basically, while i dont make a habit of it, i dont try hard to stop myself f/ helping either.

Aggressive...is awful. Unless you're planning on sitting still and having the same monsters spawn around you so that your pet can attack them, it's generally a bad idea. There are lots of monsters in any given area, and it really sucks to have your Voidwalker try to kill everything in an entire region, thus killing you.

I personally use Defensive, but it's important to know how the setting works. The pet will attack anything that attacks you, not anything you attack yourself. So once you get hit, your pet will join in, without fail. However, if your pet is fighting something else, either because you told it to, or because that thing hit you first, it won't attack the new monster.

When I fight solo, I cast a debuff or two from maximum range, in an area where (hopefully) nothing else will attack me, and then once it hits me, my pet immediately joins in.

As far as claiming monsters goes, to keep this in-topic, a pet cannot claim a monster for you. The first PC to hit a monster claims it, and so you'll want to fire off a curse or something to ensure the monster is yours, instead of sending a pet in.

Edit: Wow, this was my 300th post. I hope it was helpful. ; ;

Weird, I have my pet on defensive and if something attacks me the pet automatically attacks it.

And if I attack something, without telling the pet to attack, when the thing gets within melee range the pet will automatically attack.

Ah, thanks.

Since I play with my hubby we're always grouped. So if he attacks somethign first and I join in, the mob always goes afetr him and not me. So my minions don't join in the fight since I'm not getting hit and I have to force them to go in, it's kind of a pain. But no biggie, just a new style to adapt to.

I had that happen to me a few times yesterday. I'd be fighting random wildlife, and this one person kept running by and finishing off my mobs. Didn't really bug me, it just had me wondering why, since I was clearly not in trouble (and where was he an hour later, when I kept getting mobbed by leopards and bears dammit? ;p). Guess he just wanted to help out like you. ;)
I don't usually attack others' mobs unless they're in trouble...the few times I accidentally did, I felt like a KSer...habit from other games I guess lol.
