So .. WoW is coming out tomorrow ...

And my dad just brought home his brand new work computer to install stuff. He's going away on business ... so it's mine for three days!

It's a brand-new iMac! 20" Widescreen (and yes, Blizzard did add widescreen support) 1.8 Ghz G5 (that blows away a P4 3.0) and a gig of RAM! WOOOT!!! Don't bash Macs - I'm a Gaming PC guy myself and I own an iBook ... But you can't argue with the Beauty of a 20" Apple widescreen !!~! Damn !! 9:20 until EB games opens!!

I'm so excited.... now I just have to go to bed so I can wake up and this waiting nightmare will be over!!

Being proud of your Mac is just not recommended..

Even in a room full of friends all you are going to get is a bunch of awkward "oh its great for desktop publishing" with a few scattered "it sure is easy to use" statements while they nervously shift their feet and look to the floor in pity of you.

You guys gotta give it to him though - it might be a Mac - but you *KNOW* it will outpower your PC - and even if you have a top notch PC that it can't outperform, you know you'd rather be playing at 50 FPS instead of 60 w/ a 20" Widescreen ;)

... And Apple makes arguably the best monitors available for the consumer market ...

I didn't really think this was a procesor intensive game? Then again, my Dual Athlons MP seem to have handled everything I have ever throw at it, even though it is aproaching 2 years old. I would drool at a 20 inch mac monitor, however....

I've got a dual P4 system, 2.63 ghz each with 2 gigs to each processor and a radeon 9800 pro xt 256mb... dont ask why i need this godly machine.
#11 Nov 23 2004 at 1:43 AM Rating: Default
Godly? I think not. Now if you said a 3.6GHZ OC'd to a 4.4GHZ with 4GB of PC 4200 RAM along with 2 Raptor 74GB HDDs witha 6800Ultra. That would be godly.

On what planet? That statement is entirely false besides the monitor part which I cannot say because you cant see a monitor from benchmarks so I will give you that one..

But as far as FPS game benchmarks go, a PC dollar for dollar will blow away mac by almost DOUBLE..

I am not insulting the guys machine it will play WOW fine.. I just dont want some poor unsuspecting person to read what you said and go buy a Mac unless he needs it for work, or he is as computer challeneged as the people on the Mac commercials.

I'm a PC guy, but I do have a soft spot for those Mac monitors.

the dual p4's will out do any single processor, overclocked or not.

Yes - but dollar for dollar he has a $3200 machine ... and those things are damn fast.

He's my RL buddy ... I'll be sure to check out his FPS tomorrow and let you know :)

... and again ... the monitor ... /drool

20" Apple Widescreen ... Sorry but that's good enough that I'm going to his house tomorrow.

Damn ... That means I have to play on my Mac laptop ... it'll be like a WoW Mac orgy!

Dell is running a sale this week on its LCD monitors...

You can get their 2005fpw, which uses the identical 1680x1050 widescreen panel found in Apple's $1299 20.1" Cinema Display, for only $565. It works with both PCs and Macs. Dell also has their highly rated 20.1" 2001fp non-widescreen model available for the same price.

Just make sure you get a two-button mouse for WoW. You'll never be as good a PC WoW player in either PvP or PvE without a two-button mouse.

As far as performance, the graphics card matters far more than the CPU. The NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 Ultra used in the iMac G5s is borderline obsolete, as you can see in this review:

http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2277&p=4

A $185 video card now common in PCs doubles to triples the gaming performance of the video card used in the iMac G5.

MSI Geforce FX5950-VTD256MB PCI-X
