I thought I read somewhere that there is an ingame mail system that allows you to actually send objects. Is this true?

I also wonder about how many items you can send and how long it takes to get them to the other person. Also, can you mail stuff to your alternate characters?

Thanks in advance!

There is mail, you can send messages, items, and money. Items take 1 hour to get to destination.

You can mail items, I think possibly 1 item and gold, not sure exactly, never sent mail. But there were 3 slots in received mail.

It takes 1 hour to send mail. You probably can send mail to your alternate characters.

Also, you 'sell' items in the mail. Send an item with C.O.D (cash on delivery) and they send you the amount of money you agreed upon when he takes the item out from the mail.

The reason you received mail from the auction house instantly, was because you were looking in the same mailbox for the same town of the auction house.

I've had people buyout my auctions while I was far from the town, only to receive my money an hour later.

There is a mailbox in front of some buildings (Inn in Brill in Tirisfal (Undead country)).

You can sent mail from those. I send a 6s bag I made with Tailoring to a Tauren m8 of mine.

You can send one item per mail and it costs 50 copper per mail. I dunno about sending money, didn't try.

1) All mail costs you 30 copper to send. Free to receive.

2) Normal mail (text only or money) is sent instantly.

3) You may include one item (or stack if stackable) per letter. Packages take one hour for delivery.

4) You may send mail COD. These also take one hour.

5) Winnings from Auctions are delivered immediately.

I really wish they would have made the auction houses simpler to figure out. Like solid prices and not all that bidding junk. I like the mail system but depending on how much you can send at once loading a mule might be tedious.

That is really cool. I've got some friends who want to start out as different races and it would be a great way of helping each other out as we get going. I'd really like the mailing things to my alt. Sometimes it's quite difficult to find someone to help with transfers, and if they're on different continents it could only be harder.

Thanks for the responses!

I used the mail system a lot during open beta. You can send messages and money almost instantly to other players or to your alts. You can also send one item, or one stack of items, to other players or to your alts, but it will take an hour for the item to arrive. Each letter costs 30 coppers to send. However, you cannot send mail to characters on the opposite faction. So if you are playing an alliance character you cannot send mail to a hoard character, even if that hoard character is one of your alts.

I think the Auction Hall is perfectly fine. It's sort of like, oh what do people call them nowadays? Oh, real auctions.

You know, bidding wars are fun, much more interesting than FFXI's crappy auction system. At least the players actually set the value of an item instead of the person selling it.

Correct. To add to this:

Mail (including money and items) may only be sent to characters of the same faction. If you have an Alliance Dwarf and want to send an item and 10 gold to your Alliance Night Elf Twink, all is good; if you want to send it to your Horde Shaman Twink, you are out of luck.

Also, if you are outbid at the Auction House, your refund is sent to your mailbox almost immediately (or as fast as the server can handle it). When the itemn server was having fits last week, this sometimes took a lot longer, but I suspect that this has been fixed. If an item of yours sells at the Auction House, the winning cash is also sent to your mailbox.

Is there anywhere on the net a comprehensive guide to using the auction house I only got to mess with it once in open beta because no one was really using it on my server.

Do you need a comprehensive guide? It's pretty simple.

I comment on it, and mail, in my guide.

THE AUCTION HOUSE

The AH, that you've heard so much about, is a giant flea market where you can buy and sell items you need (or don't need.) Anything from equippable items to potions to tradeskill supplies to rare non-combat pets and a few select quest items can be found in the auction house.

Items are done on the basis of BIDS. When you wish to put an item up for sale, you talk to an auctioneer and pick a time length you want the auction to run for. You then set a minimum bid and optionally a buyout price. There is a small overhead charged to you based on the item's vendor value and the length of the auction. (Choices are 2, 8, or 24 hours.)

If you are on the market for something, or just want to browse, the auction house interface search feature is fairly straight forward. If you want to specify an item by name, type it in the name blank. If you are looking for a general kind of item, use the tabs below to pick specifically that you want, say, a piece of armor, type leather, for the arm slot. You can filter things down by adding a level range or by only seeing items your character could presently use. Make sure you don't put a level range when looking for tradeskill supplies or other things that have no level requirements. =p

As you peruse the items that meet your criteria, you can either refine your search or look at the bid and buyout prices of the items and consider putting money down on one. Bids will take money out of your gold supply, and will be held until the auction finishes or you are outbid. If you win the auction, the item will be in your mailbox. It you are outbid, the money from your bid will be instead. Buyout is the means to escape the wait of the auction altogether, and is preferable for almost anything that is not a worn piece of equipment. Buyout prices are always higher than bid prices, but in the act of putting your money down, the auction ends and you instantly have the item placed in your mailbox.

Auction houses for each faction are located in Ironforge and Orgrimmar, near the entrances of the two cities. There are also two auction houses in the goblin cities of Booty Bay and Gadgetzan which both factions can make use of - and this is the only way an item can reach the other faction - but they aren't widely used due to being less accessible and having a higher charge to list items.

A brief bit of strategy for the auction house, folks: when you are listing an item, you should nearly always use a semi-realistic buyout price. You don't actually need to put a buyout, but unless people are bidding on some high-ticket rare sword or whatever, they will often sooner spend 50 silver for their healing potion now so they can use it on their upcoming adventure, rather than put 5 silver down for a potion they will get in a "long" or "very long" time. OTOH, saying you should always have a buyout price doesn't mean you should put down stupid-high buyouts like 30 gold for one piece of linen cloth.

Trading items is done by either picking a player and selecting trade, or highlighting the item and "dropping" it on the player. A simple trade interface appears that lets you place several items in the trade window, as well as any sum of money you have, and consent to the trade. If both parties agree, without the trade changing in-between, the game swaps them.

You cannot drop items on the ground. You also cannot trade to opposite faction members. The only way to transfer items between factions is through the neutral auction house, but you can't play both factions on the same server anyway.

If you want to transfer an item to another character, mail it.

Mailboxes are outside the inn, or in some cases the bank, in every town through Azeroth. (There won't be one at your newbie village, but the main town in the starting zone will have one.) Mailboxes have a few different looks to them, but they should be easy to spot.

When you click on a mailbox, you are given two options - look at your mail, or send your own mail. If you choose to send a piece of mail, you must choose your recipient, give the letter a subject, and optionally you can either type a message or attach money or an item to the letter.

As you receive a piece of mail, it will appear in your in-box, and remain there for 30 days. Mail with items or money attached will show that in their icon. Basic messages will be letters. Click on a piece of mail and (if there is one) you can click on the item at the bottom to detach it and take it with you.

Items can be sent COD. If someone sends you an item this way, you will have money taken from you and sent to that person if you accept the delivery. Be careful of mail scams.

If you don't want a piece of mail any longer, or simply want to return it to sender, you can either select "return" or "delete". Mail from the auction house will delete itself once you take the money/item attached.

It's pretty self-explanatory, you can search for items through different categories and you can narrow your search by selecting only specific categories (such as Armor->Leather->Head).

As for putting it up for sale, there is a fee involved, and you can dictate how long the item is up on the Auction Hall. I forgot exactly how long it is, but there are Short, Long and Very Long options, with prices rising with the cost of the item and duration of auction. You have the option to set the starting bid, and you can also put up a buyout price, which is the price at which the item is automatically sold.

A good rule of thumb is to set a buyout price on something that people can usually use right away or are very common (i.e. linen cloth, copper ore), you know, it ensures quicker profits for you. If the item is excessively rare (blue/epic(purple) drop that has very nice stats), either set up a very high buyout price that you wouldn't mind letting it go for, or don't put a buyout and let the prices skyrocket as the bidding war goes on!

Haha, I love real Auction Halls. :D

EDIT: Az beat me. :<

hmm, I didn't realize you couldn;t send mail between faction characters...

Which made me wonder, can you trade with players from the opposite faction in person?

Anyone know?

Nope, you can not trade or mail anything to opposing sides. But someone said it takes one hour to receive items in the mail system. I used to send items to my alts and it never took a hour to get my items which I had right away.
#20 Nov 22 2004 at 6:35 PM Rating: Decent
No, players from opposite factions cannot trade directly with each other. Nor can they, for the most part, even talk to each other. Blizzard has purposely made it difficult to do anything more than make rude gestures at each other before you engage in a duel. :-)

Yes, there is a one-hour wait now. Blizzard added this to discourage people from using their other characters as bank mules.

Okay I'm going to say this 'cuase I feel it needs to be said.

The mail system in this game reminds me of the mail system in Animal Crossing. About the only things different is you don't have to buy paper in WoW to send a letter and there was no CoD in Animal Crossing.
