Guides Shipped Early?Follow

I have a query for my neigbours to the south in the good ol' USofA. Have any of you actually gotten your strategy guides yet?

See, EBgames.com has already shipped them (As far as I know) and I think the EB stores in the US are selling them. However, here in Canada, I was actually refused the right to buy them. They were sitting on the shelf, prices marked, but EB would not sell them to me. Two other stores had them, but would not put them out.

I just want to see if this is common thing or if we Canadians are getting shafted for no apparent reason.

All I wanted was to read the guide tomorrow when I'm going to be bored sick. That's all. I don't see any reason why they should refuse to sell the guide but yet have them on the shelves. What's next? Having the game out but telling us we can't buy it?

I picked mine up at the new EBGames location on Steeles at the north end of Toronto. It's just the one store that's refusing to sell it.

Dammit..that's the one place I didn't go to. I'm in Richmond Hill and the 3 in that area are refusing to sell. Hmm...I wonder if I can make it down there in 30 mins.

(Thanks for the info)

Edit: Abysmal spelling.

I really have to question the value of the guides. So much info has been changed in just the past two weeks(such as talents for the Hunter and Paladin) as well as in other areas of the game with much to be added after the launch, I have to wonder what we will actually get out of buying the guides. I just can't see them giving a great deal of accurate information.

I'm sure there will be a lot of pretty pictures though. I'd rather put the $15-$20 to the Collector's edition(total cost of $80) and get the cloth map, in-game non-combat pet, art book and other extras than buy a book that's outdated when I get it.

That's just me though. :P

I got my guide at EBGames in Montreal. Had to argue with the clerk/manager who thought they weren't supposed to release until the game came out. They checked with head office, and bradygames.com website and the official release is indeed November 16th.

The guide is great by the way! Hope you'll get it.

The guide has all of the new info, such as the Hunter Talents.

Of course - info is bound to change - but honestly the 432 page guide is just full of useful reference info and I'm happy I got it.

And - if also gives me a couple thousand pics to drool over until Tuesday ^^

The whole purpose of a strat guide is something to look at when servers are down for maintenence or patching. Its also good for planning out your character on paper (which is totally worthless) but i get a sense of completion and structure when i have my character planned out. I also look at it every 5 seconds when i do have one and ready the same stuff over and over again trying to glean any little tidbits of info out of it. But yeah for the most part guides for MMORPGs are pretty much worthless, you learn as much as they can put in a guide in the game in about 1 hour.

The Guide is supposed to be released early, I suppose as a way to make people anxiously waiting for the game to explode, or something. I know it's supposed to be released early because Gabe and Tycho from Penny-Arcade have done a strategy guide signing (they drew up some strips for the guide).

And holy crap, someone else on this board lives in Richmond Hill? And another one in Toronto? Ahh, small world!

I got it from the EB that kingjord suggested. For those of you that wish to debate the value of the guide, there was another thread for that.

Turns out the EB managers in my area all have their heads up their asses and have been reprimanded by the Head Office. I also think I managed to score 20% off the game, but I'll know for sure on Tuesday :)

I didn't happen to see that thread, but that's completely besides the point. As long as the guide is being discussed here it's certainly applicable to the conversation and need not be directed anywhere else.

If what you were saying were true, then this should also probably have been post there rather than having it's own thread so everyone can read aout the guides in one place.

In closing though, it's anyone's right to post what they want where they want if they are at least keeping to the spirit of the forums and the particular thread they are speaking in, which I feel I've done.

Ya, there was another thread debating the guide here:

(EDIT: how do I corectly link?)

I picked up my guide thursday night 11/18 from my eb in York Pa. They weren't on the shelves yet but when I asked the clerk went into the back and brought one out without giving me any problems. Actually he brought the two different covered versions out to ask me which one I wanted.

Not only have they shipped the guides early, but most EB games should have the game itself RIGHT NOW, they just can't sell it until Tuesday..

I wish they'd do a midnight release of it..

The guide might be handy to have, but since we can ACTUALLY ALT+TAB (unlike another MMORPG which I won't mention because my fingers would burn off) I think this site will provide me with most of the info I need, and if it doesn't have it yet, it will eventually :)

Withdrawal...of ...Warcraft... WoW.. T_T

They do. I bought the guide from a friend of a friend that works at EB and he showed me the stash. I even asked if I could take one early so I don't have to come back in on Tuesday when the servers are up. Alas, they could get in SERIOUS trouble if they release any copies early.

the funny thing would be if you looked at the $49.99 price on the box of WoW when the guy showed it to you, then said "how much would that be with tax about?"

"56 bucks", he said.

You grab the box, toss 60 bucks at the register, "Keep the change", then leave.

I don't even think that would be considered theft.

Why would it be considered theft, exactly? *scratches head*

Oh you mean if you did this before the game was supposed to be sold. Ok I get it now. *feels dumb*

Yeah, I don't think they could really do anything to you that would hold up in court, but if you live in a place like I do, and they decided to not let you buy from them again, then you don't have any choice but to buy from wal mart or online...and that sucks. =(

I think that would considered theft to a point due to the fact that they aren't required to sell a game to you. If you decided to throw money at them, its not the same as you buying the item, its like you just left money in the store and stole a game. Now, EB probably won't do anything about it, not worth the hassle.

The guide is really cool, but EB still hasn't received the collectors edition guides that I'm waiting for.

The data definitely has some major flaws, especially in Paladin abilities, talents, etc. Judgement sends holy bolts in all directions, doing 253-303 holy damage?

Technically this is theft if they decide to hold you to it. Without a receipt or a register sale, they can get you for shoplifting. Wether or not you leave money behind doesn't change the fact that you walked out the door with merchandise without a transaction taking place.
