the little things that make WoW greatFollow

I've noticed a bunch of little things, that when added up, make WoW a great game. We all know about graphics, sounds, jobs, races, etc.. but it's the little background things I'm noticing that are really making the game great.

For instance:

1) Have you noticed that the wolves will run around and attack the rabbits and rats that are wandering around? It's kind of fun to kill a wolf just after it's killed a rabbit.

2) Putting your name and job into the quests. Sure it's a simple programming thing, but it makes the game that much more immersive.

3) Starting each race in separate areas. This makes it so much cooler when you're in the human lands and you see a gnome or a dwarf wandering around. It makes it more of a big deal to see a lvl 5 Gnome wandering around in Northshire.

4) That you have to search out some NPCs. They aren't all in the same area. To find the leatherworking and skining trainers in Dolanaar, you have to search them. I found the enchanting trainer by accident when I was doing a quest (she's in Oracle Glade).

5) The quests are designed to progressively move you around the zones and explore.

What have you found/noticed that adds to the game?

buh?

Trademark Warcraft flourishes, like people telling you to STFU if you click on them enough.

The way the citizens of Stormwind go about their day's affairs, from carrying buckets of water, to the people hawking wares in the street, the boy that steals the little girl's doll and threatens to destroy it, the class on a field trip throughout the city to see the major points, and the girl in Old Town that slaps you if you make a rude gesture at her.

The way most zones fits together (within the zone) seamlessly without too much space between them and without seeming contrived.

The light-hearted humor and references to things outside the game without being too forced. (I'll make an exception for the Nintendo people in Un'goro.)

The clever content you would never expect to see...like an F-1 racetrack.

The general way things piece together in the game to make it just as meaningful to accomplish things and often takes just as long to do it, but without you noticing or minding. It's rare I look at my watch and say GDI I just spent 12 hours today playing WoW and what do I have to show for it...because there's always *something* to show beyond a mere two pixels of experience. There's always a sense of accomplishment, of progress, and most importantly, of fun.

When I first joined beta 6 months ago I would have said Mechanical Squirrels, which are one of the greatest inventions of all engineering kind.

Coming to the close of beta, it's a hard decision to think of just one thing that describes the pinnacle of "neatness" of WoW, I would have to say that it's the mail that you get from quest NPCs. I believe it was the level 10 Druid quest that you get something in your mailbox a while after completing the quest. Although a small thing, similar to the everyday affairs of the people in cities, this gives the game a sense of ownership, of fully emerging yourself into the world of Azeroth. To that, I bow my head to the game devs who came from all edges of the world to create a game that I really think that I will enjoy in being able to KEEP a character I'm making.

The bum that is in Trade Center of Stormwind that keeps asking for money...

There are others too, but the list is too long...

I actually feel like I am in the game, and not just "another adventurer that is trying to hit the level cap"

And the greatest orc saying of all "ZUG ZUG" and who can forget taurens, "Moo, are you happy now"

As sad is this may sound, I love the ability to jump. I also really like how the trams are like Space Mountain rollercoasters-my first time I almost threw my hands in the air and shouted "Whee!" Of course, I have more composure than that. Also, summoning and Drain Soul look so awesome; I felt so demonic doing them.

Edited for typos and suchlike.

Okay, one thing I think EVERYONE should do:

Do the "Rumbleshot's Ammo" Quest in Kharanos. I have made several alts JUST to do this quest, as you really have to take a few minutes to see what all goes on, but trust me, it is worth it.

Go to SteelGrill's near Kharanos, up and to the right as you face SteelGrill is another dwarf with a quest, take the rumbleshot quest and go get the ammo crate (it is pretty easy to find really, just follow the quest instructions).

Take the crate to Rumbleshot who is located between Kharanos and the road leading to the Dwarf Newbie Zone (name escapes me at the moment). Make sure ALL the dwarves are down there near Rumbleshot and sitting around. If not, wait a few moments as someone else has started/just finished the quest.

When they are all there, give the crate of ammo to Rumbleshot and then just listen and follow the dwarves as they go up to the practice range. I assure you, the few minutes are worth the entertainment value. This is classic Blizzard humor, I have done it four times and have found parts I missed each time as I was watching/listening to something else, they did a superb job on this quest.

Just my 2cp, but I found it one of the best thought out and humorous ends to a quest I have seen in ages.

By far my favorite two moments:

Running around in Dun Morough with Find Ore on, I see a pip in the middle of the lake. I investigate further, to find a copper vein underwater! So there is my chubby dorf swingin a pick with bloated cheeks underwater. Just as I finish and start to break for the surface, another vein appears, and I can see a gnome swimming for it... Do I go for it, knowing I'll drown, or let the gnome have it?

The next best part was in Loch Modan, again in the water. I'm search around the base of a dam for this and that, again cheeks puffed out, when out of nowhere this giant monster attacks me! I slaughter the beast, realize it is a young version of Nessy, and promptly proceed to skin it underwater. I then drown, having completely forgotten about my breath bar in the fight.

have you ever killed a wolf after it killed a rabit and gotten rabit meat?... well... me neither, i have gotten rabit feet though... hmm... maybe only the wolves tha eat rabits drop the rabit feet.... i must experiment!

Aww..beat me to the punch. I get rabbit's feet off of wolves. First time it happened I thought it was a glitch then later that day I saw a wolf work a rabbit...made me laugh very hard.

OK, so little things...Thank you Blizzard for the lazy peon quest in the orc newbie zone. I loved running around jacking those peons with a blackjack.

And the worker cass in general being just like Warcraft. In the human lands when I see a lumberjack guy I love clicking on him just to hear him "More work?" and "Wha is it?".

The teacher with her kids walking around Stormwind. I love it. They stop in front of the cathedral or the fountain and all get in a semi-circle as if they are on a field trip. When they move about the city, the kids run and skip and even race each other.

When you kill or fight something and a passive animal is close by, sometimes they will bolt off as if frightened.

The flight trips on Hips or Gryphs...or whatever...wonderful to view and change camera angles.

No zoning!

I was looking for the fire totem guy in the Barrens, wandered too far north and came across this pack of gazelles. It looked like I was in the middle of a Discovery Channel show, very neat.

I love the gazells, they travel in a pack along the barrens, and if you are a skinner, its like going on a hunt. I can ussually pick off 3-4 at range before they get out of range, then just run up and collect my bounty.

To add to the whole ghost/orb thing: It’s been to my advantage that I’ve been able to explore an area as a ghost with no fear of being attacked. Saves time and grief.

*thumbs up on the death system*

I enjoy the way they did the death system, since it allows you to see the terrain, but only way you can see mobs are close to your coprse.
