Here's how I look at it. You've played the game since 2004, as I have too, thats 9 years of your life put into a game, of course its going to get old for you, I mean heck, look how far call of duty is, when wow was released they were only on the 2nd call of duty. There is noone who can say that any mmo did it better, look at subscriptions. They do prove that wow is by far the most successful game ever, there has never been a game that has sold as much or made a company as much money as wow.
The thing is though, that I played it for many many years. I didn't get sick of it until they started watering it down. I actually enjoyed cruising around old content, and exploring parts and quests that hadn't been around since Vanilla. I loved finding elites I had never heard of and stumbling upon quests that took ridiculous amounts of effort. They gave me something to look forward to, a challenge, something unseen for years (by most at least), and it made things interesting.
Then along came Cataclysm and "polish" which removed all of the loose ends, simplified quests, and suddenly I didn't even have to put effort into what I was doing. Even at max level the level 60 stuff was interesting because it was an artifact, something to discover. I hadn't played in Vanilla, and never really raided in BC, so for me it was all new and exciting even if it was old news to some. There were many factions and quest lines that were ridiculous... but because we were now a few expansions beyond them they were not required for anything. So that meant, for those of us who like exploring and wanted a long term goal, or some lesser known area nobody visited anymore, we could do those things if we chose.
But then Cataclysm removed it totally. I wasn't going to sit down and hardcore grind out Zandalari rep, but that little reputation slider gave me something to look forward to as I visited it over the years. Now, all of that is either gone, or completed in an hour. And there is no point to it! I can just skip that area and move on to next-expansion content if I were interested in just leveling or experience.
